The village boasts a lovely C12 church, the Tolpuddle Martyrs Museum, the Martyrs Inn, and a Village Hall.

You can enjoy delightful walks using the wealth of footpaths and bridleways nearby and can take a walk along the River Piddle to the C15 Athelhampton House and Gardens, with its Restaurant/tea room.

Location description from owner

The England region

The West Country covers the counties of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset, which is the most easterly. Dorset is probably most famous for its coastline - the World Heritage Jurassic Coast - 95 miles representing 185 million years of geology, home to Chesil Beach, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Towns to visit include the County Town of Dorchester, Lyme Regis, Weymouth, Corfe Castle, Bridport, Shaftesbury and Sherborne while villages not to be missed include Cerne Abbas, Abbotsbury and Milton Abbas. Ancient sites include Dorchester's Roman Town House, The Hardy Monument, St Catherine's Chapel, Kingston Russell Stone Circle, Jordan Hill Roman Temple, Maiden Castle, The Cerne Abbas Giant, and many more. The climate in Dorset is mild, less wet, cool and moist than the South-West of England generally.Dorset is great for lovers of wildlife as its habitats are among the richest for biodiversity in the country. It is also the only county in England without a Motorway!

Tolpuddle

The County Town of Dorchester offers a good range of shops and places to eat, as well as Museums, Sports facilities, a Market Place and Gardens. On the outskirts is Poundbury, famous internationally as a pioneering and somewhat controversial example of urban development using principles expounded by The Prince of Wales.Tolpuddle achieved world renown when, in 1834, six labourers were tried and found guilty of starting a trade union to campaign against the harsh treatment they and thousands of others received from their employers. A museum in the village, just a few hundred yards from the cottage, tells their story

“The nicest cottage we've stayed in.......and we've stayed in a few!”

Reviewed 28 Dec 2015

Wren Cottage was a delight, tastefully decorated and welcoming with a friendly ambience in every room. It provided every amenity that one could wish for, even a (working) alarm clock in the main bedroom and comfortable furniture throughout. The kitchen was also amply equipped for 4 people and the two bathrooms were spacious and well thought out. The cottage's location was also perfect for seeing West Dorset and the village of Tolpuddle and its inhabitants were also a delight, with many walks accessed from the cottage, great when you have a dog with you. The very private courtyard garden will be lovely when the weather's good (not so in December!) Local information was abundantly provided and up to date and there were numerous books of interest available. Also the best selection of dvds and games we've come across. All in all, the nicest cottage we've stayed in - and we've stayed in a few - we shall certainly stay there again.

Thank you so much for your review Wendy and I am glad that you enjoyed your Christmas break at Wren Cottage. As you said in your email to me, it's the little things that count and we think that we are able to provide these by virtue of staying regularly ourselves and knowing what is needed to make a stay here everything you would hope for. You have already booked to return next year when I trust the weather will be kinder to you and you can enjoy the garden and more exploration of the area - there really is a huge amount to enjoy, from coast to country.

“Excellent, clean, comfortable, well equipped cottage”

Reviewed 1 Oct 2015

Wren cottage is a superb home from home, clean, comfortable and well equipped, As a dog friendly cottage it's the very best we've stayed in. Well situated for discovering both coast and countryside. The village of Tolpuddle is charming, many of the neighbours were very chatty and helpful. The local pub 'The Martyrs Inn' served very good food and was also dog friendly. All in all one of the best holidays we've had with Heidi our Cocker Spaniel

Thank you very much for your review and it is so great to read your comments. We bought Wren Cottage a few years after our first cottage and chose it for its ideal location and light and bright interior not to mention the peace and quiet and the views from the front of the house. We are about to have the inside decorated so it will be lovely and fresh for Autumn and Winter visitors. Our cocker spaniel, Watson, loves to visit Dorset too and everywhere is so dog friendly which is a boon - perhaps if we are staying at West Lane Cottage when you are next at Wren the dogs can meet up! We understand your comment about mobile reception - the Piddle Valley generally is very mixed - which is why we highlight this in our booking form. You can check coverage using http://www.ofcom.org.uk/mobile-coverage but it seems that both Vodaphone and EE are fine but 02 and Three may not be. We await improvements in rural broadband and mobile coverage!

“Lovely modern cottage”

Reviewed 9 Sep 2015

Well equipped modern cottage. Home from home every thing you need and comfortable bedrooms. Great pub round the pub called the Martys Inn some lovely meals was had in there. Wren cottage is set in a lovely part of Dorset so much to see and do.

Thank you for your review of Wren Cottage - so good to hear that you have everything that you needed here - we have tried to think of everything required for a self catering holiday, including comfortable beds! I am also pleased to hear that you enjoyed the Martyrs Inn - it is great to have this well run pub so close - the Fish and Chip Friday, Curry Night on Monday and Sunday Carvery are all very popular so visitors should note that it is as well to book for these. "So much to see and do" is a comment we hear often and we hope you will come back for a third visit sometime!

“Welcoming, comfortable, warm, home from home!”

Reviewed 5 Sep 2015

Our stay was very comfortable at Wren Cottage. The owners have provided everything to ensure a thoroughly stress free stay. The location is excellent to travel out and about with many attractions on beautiful villages to explore. Towns and Countryside are all within a half hour drive. The local Pub serve fantastic food and are also very welcoming. It appears that a lot of thought has gone in to making this an ideal place to use as a base. If you are unlucky to have bad weather the cottage gives a cosy refuge to read, relax and quiet enough for a lovely nights sleep.

A stress free holiday is what we aim to provide. We have stayed at cottages with uncomfortable beds and sofas, little kitchen equipment and, in one case, wardrobes full of clothes and kitchen cupboards full of tins! These are all things you can do without! It is kind of you to take the time to review Wren Cottage and also to mention that the nearby Martyrs Inn serves fantastic food and are very welcoming. We find their Sunday Carvery very good and the staff are always polite and helpful. We have tried to provide for poor weather by providing games, DVDs and plenty of books and the "wood burning" stove makes for a cosy feel if you want to stay in.

“Beautifully appointed cottage in a lovely location”

Reviewed 3 Sep 2015

We have stayed in Wren cottage on several occasions because it is the perfect place to stay to explore this lovely part of Dorset. The cottage is beautifully decorated and well maintained whilst having a warm, homely feel. It is light and airy with good views of the surrounding countryside from the bedrooms upstairs. It is well furnished and the beds are extremely comfortable - perfect for a good night's sleep. The cottage also has a pretty front and back garden and ample parking. we cannot recommend it highly enough and we look forward to our next stay !

Can you believe that you have been staying at Wren Cottage for the last five years now? Thank you for posting a review and for sharing your thoughts about what makes this cottage worth returning to. We will be redecorating internally over the winter and the outside is being done in a few weeks time so we hope it will look even better for your next visit. We thought it worthwhile investing in good quality beds with the aim of having visitors who can relax from their first night onwards. It is so lovely to wake up and look at the views from the bedrooms in the morning and we enjoy a circular walk in the surrounding countryside before breakfast and a cappuccino from the Dolce Gusto machine!

“Well located cottage with everything you need for a great stay”

Reviewed 2 Sep 2015

Well equipped, clean property which is well located to explore the area. Helen was excellent at arranging the visit and we subsequently stayed at the sister property which was very good as well. Highly recommend a visit.

We have a background of customer service and property and decided that providing holiday cottages was something we would enjoy doing. We chose the Piddle Valley as we love the area and felt others would too. The cottages are holiday lets but are also regularly used by us so we hope that this means that everything you could need is provided as we treat them as true homes. It is always so heartening to hear our visitors lovely comments - thank you.

“Lovely and Relaxing”

Reviewed 23 Feb 2015

This is such a nice cottage to stay in. We stayed for a week with our dog and had a great time exploring nearby walks through woods. Kitchen has everything you need to self cater in style. The pub almost next door is a nice place for a beer or dinner.

Thank for taking the time to post a review of Wren Cottage. I was particularly pleased that we were able to help you with a dog sitter and that it worked out so well for you all. Best wishes, Helen

“A welcoming and well equipped cottage in a wonderful location”

Reviewed 31 Oct 2011

The cottage was home from home, excetionally clean and well equipped with all appliances and broadband. Booking the cottage was easy and the owner made us (and our dog) feel most welcome. The village of Tolpuddle is delightful with walks close to hand and within easy reach of the coast and downs and many National Trust properties and other attractions. We would love to come again.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review of our new cottage. We are so glad you all enjoyed your holiday and you would be most welcome to return of course!

“Well equiped, very comfortable cottage in great location for Dorset highlights”

Reviewed 2 Oct 2011

We have previously stayed at the owners other cottage in Piddlehinton (not far away) and were impressed with the level of attention to detail in that cottage. When the new venue became available we booked straight away, safe in the knowledge that the cottage would be to the same high standard as previously. We were not disappointed. Lovely quiet location with fabulous views from the bedroom window. Excellent location for day tripping to all that Dorset has to offer. A pub with good food within easy walking distance. Can't think of a single thing that has been omitted in the cottage which is well furnished with excellent equipment. We will certainly be coming back for more

A late response I'm afraid as I did not realise that there was a facility for me to reply. We are so glad that you enjoyed Wren Cottage as much as West Lane Cottage in Piddlehinton. It is hard for me to choose for people which one they should pick if both are available - the short answer is West Lane Cottage if you have dogs or like to walk from the door and Wren Cottage if you like to lie in of a morning (and enjoy the view) and particularly enjoy a very smart shower room!

“A lovely cottage with high quality furnishings in a tranquil village.”

Reviewed 20 Aug 2011

The booking service was efficient and friendly. The property is furnished to a high standard with comfortable beds, luxurious towels and a kitchen lacking nothing. Two bathrooms as well as a downstairs cloakroom are a bonus. Tolpuddle is a lovely village, well situated for exploring Dorset's many attractions. The local Inn is a short walk away and provides good food with friendly service. We will definitely return and can confidently recommend this lovely cottage. Our one regret is we were there for only a week.

It is now April and I have only just discovered that there is space here for me to respond to your review so apologies for not knowing "the system". I am so glad you enjoyed your holiday and our cottage - we really do aim to please and try to think of everything that you could want. Having had very many self catering holidays ourselves, I hope we know what our visitors want!
