Location description from manager

The England region

Timsbury

Cider Press Cottage is located on the edge of the village of Priston, a village just 5 miles outside Bath and the site of a Roman villa dating from about 100 AD! The village is recorded in the Domesday Book, highlighting its age, with reference made to the presence of the church, possibly wooden! We do know, however, that as old as the church is, it was 'modernised in the 12th Century when the nave of the Church of St Luke and St Andrew were added! Similarly the church's tower dates from the 15th century and has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building, so we do recommend a stroll down to see a little bit of Bath and English history. (There is a disproportionately large weather vane given as a gift by the lord of the manor in 1813!)

The village has a good quality local pub called The Ring of Bells, and has a very solid reputation for its food and friendly welcome. It is also very much the quintessential village with a thriving community of activities, should you wish to partake when staying at the Cider Press Cottage. It's history, as you can see is deep and in fact Priston Mill was given by the monks of Bath Abbey in 931 and is powered by a 25 feet water wheel. Today the present building dates from the late 18th or early 19th century and is maintained in working condition, with the associated tithe barn (1700's) it is currently used as a wedding and conference venue.

Beyond the village are a range of excellent things to do. No less is a trip into Bath, which is quick and easy, where you will find an almost endless list of things to do ranging from the Roman Baths through to an excellent selection of restaurants, shops and a whole range of things to keep you busy. Failing that you could drive within 45 mins to Longleat to see the lions and monkeys, a wealth of National Trust properties and gardens - you name it there is so much to do in this excellent location!

“Nice place to stay near Bath”

Reviewed 1 Mar 2017

My husband and I had a lovely time staying at the Cider Press Cottage. We were greeted with a warm welcome and a lemon drizzle cake baked for us by the owners. The cottage was exactly as shown on the photographs and met all our expectations. It was really nice to sit with the wood burner on in the evenings. In the field at the back there were a couple of naughty sheep that came to say hello to us in the private terrace area. This would be a lovely area to sit out on in the summer months. The location of the cottage was in a nice quiet rural village with a few walks nearby alliwing you to take in the views. There is also a pub nearby but we didn't get a chance to visit it as there was a birthday party on one night and it was closed on a Monday. I would definitely recommend staying here if visiting Bath, particularly as there's a park and ride close by which takes you in to the city centre.

Owner's reply: Thank you very much for this review. It's a very welcome lift in this gloomy weather!!! We hope to see you again one day. Best wishes
