The Peak District National Park region
A popular destination for hillwalkers and hikers the Peak District's has a large network of public footpaths. Several long-distance trails are also available in the park which are popular with cyclist, horse riders as well as walkers. While the many grit-stone outcrops , Peak limestone cliffs, caves and caverns are popular with rock climbers and cavers alike. Water and air sports are also popular with nearby lakes and reservoirs provides opportunity for sailing, fishing and canoeing while gliders, hang-gliders, paragliders, and balloonists are a common sight in the local skies.
The ancient village of Tideswell is situated in the heart of the Peak District National Park six miles from Bakewell. Located in a large valley it's surrounded by scenic hills and dales crisscrossed with the traditional dry-stone walls long associated with this area of northern England.
The original settlement of Tideswell predates the Roman occupation and become a thriving market town in the Middle Ages when its magnificent church was constructed. Although not actually a cathedral, St John the Baptist is known locally as the 'Cathedral of the Peaks' due to its impressive architecture that dominates the village.
In the Spring and Summer months the Peak District tradition of Well dressing takes place with many towns and villages participating in this very old practice of dressing the village wells and springs to give thanks for the purity of the water. Tideswell's well dressing takes place during the last week of June and kicks off a week of activities including, brass bands and guising (a custom of acting out traditional plays based on local folklore), and culminates in a carnival and torch-led procession through the village on the last Saturday in June.
Nearby places include Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Castleon and numerous Caverns.

"Rockingham Lodge is a Gem. 6 Star!"
That three letter word describes this 2 bedroom/2 bath apt. My sister and her husband, and I, drove to Tideswell (dates back to the 13th century) after a four day stay in Oxford. Our goal was a visit to Chatsworth (a fantastic experience) and to visit Lyme Park, a National Trust property (another fantastic experience; Pride and Prejudice was filmed here). Tideswell itself is a very small village. For me, a resident of midtown New York City, visiting Tideswell is like landing on another extremely pleasant, refreshing and beautiful planet. It is located in The Peaks District. Driving to Tideswell, or, from Tideswell to Chatsworth or to Lyme Park, one drives through verdant rolling farmland, undivided due to the age old English system of primogeniture. Our accommodation at Rockingham Lodge was on the 2nd floor, very roomy, with a living area/dining table combination, a terrace accessed via the living area, a kitchen with table and chairs, and 2 large bedrooms with 2 modern, ensuite baths. The beds are very comfortable. There are oversized windows in each bedroom. There is a washer/dryer, always a plus. There are homey touches: the right teapot, teabags, dishtowels, and a box of chocolate covered sticks. The owner has thoughtfully provided quality toiletries. We cannot recommend these lodgings highly enough. The owner is very pleasant and very easy to work with. All in all, our stay in Rockingham Lodge was a highlight of our two week plus stay in the United Kingdom. We give Rockingham Lodge 6 Stars!
