Location description from owner

The England region

Cross View is situated in the small village of Litton, which has a village green, a shop and a pub - the Red Lion, which enjoys a very high reputation for its excellent cuisine, beers and friendly atmosphere.

The community-run village shop is staffed mainly by volunteers and offers a good range of food, drink, local produce and crafts, as well as cups of tea and home-made cakes. You can also place personal orders for supermarket shopping which will be delivered to the shop twice a week.

Litton is situated in the limestone White Peak, with a wide choice of walks literally on the doorstep. Cressbrook Dale, for example, can be reached in ten minutes (five for children). To see its flowers at their best, visit in May or June, but it is unmissable at any time of year. The gritstone Dark Peak is also only a short car drive away. Castleton and Mam Tor offer a different and wilder scenery.

Tideswell

Fifteen minutes' walk (or 5 minutes drive) away is the large village of Tideswell, famous for its church, known as the Caathedral of the Peak. It also has cafes, pubs and shops, including Tindall's, a local bakery and delicatessen, and the Peak District Dairy farm shop and cafe, which sells a wide range of local produce.

The attractive market town of Bakewell, famous for its Bakewell Pudding, is only 15 minutes' drive away. The spa town of Buxton, famous for its mineral water and its Opera House is 20 minutes away.

There are lots of exciting activities for children near Litton, such as Gulliver’s Kingdom, an adventure park in Matlock, and Alton Towers is accessible for a day trip. At the Painted Plate, in the Eyam Craft Centre, children can paint their own designs onto pottery. Chatsworth House has a farm and adventure playground. Closer to home, there are fields to run in and lambs in Spring.

“Lovely home from home in a peaceful village”

Reviewed 5 Jun 2013

We stayed for a week in Cross View with 2 children, a teenager and 2 dogs. The cottage is comfortable and the owner provides everything you need (including bedding, towels, washing up liquid, even dishwasher tablets) we were very impressed. It has a small garden, which was lovely to sit in after a day walking the monsal trail. The village itself is small with just one shop/post office but it was a pleasant 20 minute walk into Tideswell for a bit more choice. I would recommend the cottage and hope to go back sometime.
