A warm welcome awaits you at The Shepherds Hide. Two luxurious and unique self catering shepherds huts, tucked away in the heart of the Essex coast just outside Colchester only an hour and a half from London.

Our luxury and romantic shepherds huts for two people are located on our family farm, hidden away in a wooded area adjacent to the mill pond in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Surround yourself in nature, forget the outside world, relax and enjoy these hidden gems.

Complete with all the luxuries you will need, a king size bed, fully kitted out kitchen, bathroom with shower, picnic and patio/decking area.

The Shepherds Hide is ideally located for walks along Alresford Creek to the coastal town of Wivenhoe right from the farm, bird watching from the shepherds hut and along the Essex creeks and salt marshes in this part of the county. It is an artists, walkers and bird watchers paradise or indeed a piece of paradise for anyone looking for a break away from their busy day to day lives.

You may wish to just enjoy the natural surroundings around The Shepherds Hide and our farm, but if you do wish to venture further afield you are in easy access to coastal towns such as Brightlingsea, Wivenhoe, Manningtree, Frinton-on-Sea, Clacton-on-Sea and Walton-on-the-Naze. There is also the Dedham Vale famous for John Constable, Colchester Zoo, Colchester Castle, the luxury Lifehouse Spa in Thorpe-le-Soken and many Essex Wildlife Trust sites such as Fingringhoe, Walton-on-the-Naze and Abberton Reservoir.

Getting around

You can get a bus to Colchester and Clacton on Sea from the top of the road or a taxi can be called to take you wherever you please. Stations to London include Wivenhoe and Alresford. These are 5-10 minutes drive away.

Always happy to help give suggestions of places to and things to see. We live on site so are always around if we are needed. If we are in when you arrive we will pop out to meet you otherwise we will always try and catch you during your stay to make sure everything is ok.

“Wonderful 'get away from it all' experience!”

What a wonderful stay. The hide was beautiful, the location stunning, and the welcome warm. The ideal place to unwind and enjoy the outstanding views across the lake. Near enough to places of interest, secluded enough to feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind! The hide is beautifully appointed, cosy and comfortable. Oh, and the free range eggs, local jam and wholemeal bread provided for your breakfast are truly delicious! Thank you Polly!

We loved our New Years stay, a lot of quirky villages to visit be we could never wait to get back to the cosy hut to enjoy it. The grounds are so peaceful, would be sure to stop again.

“Relaxing, peaceful, need a car”

Lovely little hideaway, very well kept and everything you need. Feels like the middle of nowhere. Nice one hour walk to Wivenhoe. Pub is about a 30 min walk. Only complaint is the bed is soft so we both got backache.

“Amazing Place to Stay”

I was tired and very weary from working the day, and I needed somewhere peaceful, quiet and above all comfortable, I have never stayed in this type of accommodation, but I was really very well pleased with the quality, cleanliness and amazing hospitality of Polly and her Husband. The location is a five star PLUS and the accommodation is five start PLUS PLUS !! I would have no problems in recommending, such a wonderful place to stay Thank you Polly it was Brill !!

“Tasteful hideaway, idyllic location, perfect for couples”

We stayed for a weekend at the Shepherd's Hide, and loved it. The owners seem to have thought of everything that a couple staying for a weekend might need, including fresh eggs from the farm. Even the handful of books were thoughtfully chosen. No wifi and limited mobile coverage, which is a good thing if like us you want a proper break. We were blessed with fine weather, so spent much of our time reading outside overlooking the mill pond. In rainy or colder weather, the hut might begin to feel small (no comfy chairs, etc) but then again we would love to have had the chance to light the small wood stove... The owners were friendly and helpful, and recommended an excellent walk to Wivenhoe along the riverbank. If you're a couple looking for a romantic, relaxing weekend, it's wonderful.

“Lovely, unique and peaceful”

We had the most amazing relaxing weekend here. The hut is situated on a beautiful farm complete with chickens and ducks, a short walk away from the main buildings but it feels like a little world of its own. It is on the banks of a peaceful mill pond surrounded by trees and bushes that mean you might spy some wildlife like rabbits when you wake up! The hut itself is really modern, beautifully decorated and with all possible amenities. You can tell that the owners have put in a real personal touch. We especially loved the locally sourced breakfast that was left in a basked with a cute note from the owners including Apple juice from a local orchard, eggs from their chickens and strawberries from the pick your own fields on site. Highly recommended for a peaceful, romantic escape. There is little phone signal or Internet but that is what makes is so special and calming.

How do damage deposits work?

In most cases, you don’t pay a damage deposit up front. Instead, we save your payment details securely and you’re only charged in the event of damage to the property.

Occasionally, you will pay a damage deposit up front as part of the total rental cost. In this case, the owner has 10 days after you check out to report any damage. If they don’t, we’ll return your deposit. If their claim is successful, we’ll deduct the agreed cost and return the remainder.

If Polly (the owner) agrees, they’ll send you a revised quote outlining the changes. You can review and accept/decline this from the Manage your holiday booking page. You’ll have 48 hours to take action before the revised quote expires.
