Location description from owner

The Yorkshire region

The North York Moors National Park is one of the most stunning landscapes in the country, it will simply make you stand and stare.

It really is a very special place. The great variety of landscapes in the North York Moors is what truly makes it unique and gives it a character which so many people can enjoy.

This is a land where dreams are made. Here you can experience the vast open space of moorland, listen to the call of the upland birds, walk for miles and miles or sit and watch the world go by.

You can wander through woods, saunter through picturesque villages of honey sandstone, throw pebbles in a stream or build sandcastles on the beach. All around are the signs of past generations, historic abbeys, embattled castles, churches, crosses, ancient routes. The local culture and traditions here are strong. You can listen, you can watch and you are welcome to join in.

Our Jurassic geology is perhaps second to none. Here the Father of English Geology made his discoveries and at the coast you can see dinosaur footprints and search for fossils as he may have done.

But the reason why the North York Moors is so very special is probaby summed up best by Aelred, Abbot of Rievaulx Abbey (1142-1167):

"Everywhere peace, everywhere serenity, and a marvellous freedom from the tumult of the world."

Thornton-Le-Dale

Dalby Forest is a must for anyone seeking great walks, mountain biking, walking in the tree tops [Go Ape] or just to find peace and tranquility. Cycles can be hired from the visitor centre on a short or longer term basis.
There are 3 pubs in Thornton-le-dale all of which do good food. The New Inn is the closest - and our favourite.
The Pickering Steam Railway is a must and in the Summer peak season it is possible to experience an Oriental Express dining trip.

The seaside is a short drive away at Scarborough as is the ancient yet cosmopolitan city of York. There are a number of local festivals including the Thornton-le-dale show and the Ryedale show, the Malton Steam fair and the Pickering 'war weekend'.

There is horse riding available nearby and it is also possible to fish for your supper at the Pickering Trout Farm or learn to fly fish. The local bus service is excellent and very popular, we have a number of visitors that do not use a car all week!

“Lovely comfortable cottage!”

Reviewed 4 Mar 2013

This cottage is in a wonderful location right in the middle of a very nice village with lots of little shops to explore and some nice walking from the door. Forge View is comfortable and clean and has every amenity you could hope for, a real home from home. We really appreciated the open fire at this time of year and lit it most nights. The two double beds were very comfortable with lovely warm quilts, we didn't use the twin bedroom, so can't comment on those beds. We'd stay in Forge View again if we wanted to visit anywhere along the North Yorkshire coast or the Moors, it's ideally placed for both areas. Christine, the owner was very accommodating and was easy to contact via email as the cottage now has wifi.

“Excellent cottage in a good location - very welcoming”

Reviewed 28 Sep 2012

There is no Wi fi available but there is in the pub a few doors away. The parking could be an issue as people park on the double yellow lines in front of the property. Other than these two things the cottage is a great base to explore the Yorkshire moors.
