The Sardinia region

Sardinia is a wonderful region, where you can take both a beach and a trekking and cultural holiday time.

At 15 minutes by car from Thiesi village you can reach the Nuraghi Valley with the King Nuraghi tower of Sant'Antine and lots of other Nuraghi towers, the romanic Basilica of San Pietro di Sorres, the Burgos medieval castle and the magnificent Burgos Forest, the Sant'Andrea Priu (near Bonorva village) Domus de Janas (meaning fairies' houses), also called in the Sardinian language "forrus" or "forreddus".
Please check www.aboutsardinia.it/foto-comune/THIESI.aspx for Thiesi pictures.
Even get a look on:
www.welcome-to-sardinia.com
www.nurighe.it for precious informations about Thiesi fairies' houses, and the Nurighe caves, still guarding the rests of "Nur", the first Sardinian people, discovered by the Thiesi speleo-archeological group.

Thiesi

Take a walk in Thiesi village, visit its medieval flowery lanes, the churches, the Duke of Asinara Palace, the fairies' houses ("Domus de Janas") below the Palace, the medieval Jail Tower. Ask the owner about some touristic guides.
Take a pizza for dinner, or buy cheese, sausages, greens, cakes in the village traditional groceries; take a tipical sardinian meal going to one of the farms of the area, ask the owner about.
Don't forget the new Museum dedicated to the well known painter Aligi Sassu, born in Milan the 17.7.1912, who lived in Thiesi during his childhood; his paintings were exhibited in several museums around the world, Roma, Milan, L'Avana, Mallorca, Rotterdam, Toronto, Sevilla, Madrid, Montreal, Ottawa, Munich, San Paolo Brazil, Bogotà, Buenos Aires...
In the Museum are showed among others 120 graphic works, developed by Aligi Sassu between 1929 and 1995 with different techniques: etching, aquatint, drypoint, lithography. And get a look to the Sassu's murales work!

At 15 minutes by car from Thiesi village you can reach the Nuraghi Valley with the King Nuraghi tower of Sant'Antine and lots of other Nuraghi towers, the romanic Basilica of San Pietro di Sorres, the Burgos medieval castle and the magnificent Burgos Forest, the Sant'Andrea Priu (near Bonorva village) Domus de Janas, also called in the Sardinian language "forrus" or "forreddus".
The Domus de Janas are sepulchres excavated in the rock, consisting often of different rooms connected through a common wide entrance and corridor, forming underground an necropolis. These constructions, either isolated or grouped together even in great numbers, are found all over Sardinia; so far at least 2,400 have been recorded, but many more are still to be excavated.
The Domus de Janas in Sant’Andrea Priu near Bonorva is one of the main of its kind in Sardinia. A neolithic necropolis of about 3000 BC, was used by following cultures and the largest tomb was made into a church in Christian times and covered with frescoes.
How to reach it: by car from Thiesi, take the road leading to Bonorva or to Bono village for about 6km; at this point take a dirt road to the right, leading to the church of Santa Lucia; past the church, after about 500 mts you can find the archeological site. Escorted visits are possible contacting a local cooperative, the Società Cooperativa Costaval in Bonorva (cellphone +39 348 5642611).
On the road to Bono Village you'll even find the Burgos Castle, built in the 12° century (1131-1132) by order of King Judge Gonario of Torres.
It is a big strong fortress, below wich King Judge Mariano IV of Arborea in the 14th century (1353) ordered to build the small village of Burgos.
At 15 min. by car from Thiesi you can see the "Front'e Mola" Nuraghi Tower. You can reach it taking the road from Thiesi to Ittiri village: after the junction to Romana village, follow the road to Ittiri for 2.8 km, then you will find two gates on each of the opposite sides of the road. Park the car and trespass the left gate, climb the slope across the trees till you reach the Tower.
The "Front'e Mola" Nuraghi stands in the "Mesu Roccas" area on a rocky ridge,; it is a really interesting "protonuraghe", a really old Nuraghi, built probably in the Middle Bronze Age. It is a "corridoio" Nuraghi, the only rectangular amidst all the circular common Nuraghi Towers.
In Banari village, at about 25 min. distance by car from Thiesi, there is the Contemporary Art Museum, an astonishing building guesting - all the year long - art exhibitions; but the Banari village worth a visit, so cosy and tidy...and don't forget the Santa Maria di Cea little romanic church!
The church of Santa Maria di Cea is located in a valley, about 5 km. northwest of Banari village. Romanic, it was built in 1260, as we learn from an inscription on the facade, originally depended from San Michele di Salvenero and is connected to a hermitage still in good condition. In this place there was the medieval village of Cea (or Sea, or Seve), which is known from the XI century and disappeared at the end of the XVI.
Some historians speculate that the church was a landmark and meeting place in Sardinia of the Templar Knights Templar in the Middle Ages.
Near Bonorva village, the astonishing Rebeccu medieval ghost village, and the Rebeccu San Lorenzo romanic church. The church was built along the old Roman road "Caralibus Ulbiam". In 1831 inside the church was found a lead seal of Barisone II, King Judge of Torres between 1147 and 1186.
And don't forget the Bidighinzu artificial lake, at 15 minutes by car! (take the road to Ittiri village).
