Location description from owner

The Sicily region

The Greek cities of Sicily as Selinunte, Segesta, Syracuse, were among the most beautiful of the Hellenic world. Visit the magnificent Greek Theatre of TAORMINA, the archaeological Roman city of Tindari, the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento or watch a show in summer grand Greek Theatre of Syracuse is an authentic diving in the distant past Hellenic. And the same happens in Sicily, with many other epochs and civilizations, from Spanish to French. Sicily is a book of history and art history, and cultures of the greatest civilizations of all time. An island with an exuberant nature, spine-tingling views and a delicious and varied cuisine of Mediterranean flavors and aromas unforgettable. Sicilian towns are Messina, TAORMINA, Catania, Siracusa, Caltanissetta, Enna, Ragusa, Trapani, Palermo, Agrigento and Noto.
Sicily guard treasures of Magna Graecia, so close to Africa, the Iberian Peninsula and East and occupies a strategic position in terms of military and commercial. Pioneered by Phoenicians, by the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, built by the Byzantines ... So much mixture, what culture, what beauty!
Flavors that run the world and perfume tables? Spectacular views, beautiful beaches, scenery, ruins, alleys, stairwells, cliffs, and the highest active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna! Sicily is a spectacle!
It is no coincidence, is the desired goal by tourists from all over the world!

If you want to make the most of it in this region, we strongly recommend that you rent a car in Sicily. Taxi Services are very expensive although where usage is necessary or convenient to you; please ensure that you get an idea of the cost of the journey before you travel.

Here you will find local bus services and you must purchase a fare ticket, which are sold at Newsagents, tobacco vendors and even some bars. A ticket will cost approximately one euro each and they are valid for 60-90 minutes from the time they are stamped. When you board the bus you must ensure to stamp your ticket in the machine provided.

Also Eating out in Sicily is relatively cheap when compared to other regions of Italy. Prices and portions will vary according to the location, size and type of establishment, though portions are usually large and the service is friendly and helpful.

Please be aware that it is often difficult to find someone who speaks English and often the menu is difficult to translate as it refers to local foods and dishes. So remember to take your dictionary with you to assist with ordering and understanding the menu.

Most Restaurants will not include service in their bill and therefore it is usual to leave a tip. Exact opening hours vary greatly from place to place. Generally in Sicily you will find that almost everything closes between 1pm and 4pm apart from a few restaurants and shops. Supermarkets close at 8pm and most pharmacies are closed at night except for the night-service pharmacies, which accommodate emergencies.

In general principle archeological sites are open from 9-12am and 4-7pm Monday - Friday and 9am - 12am Saturday (Summer hours may be longer). Museums are open from 9-1 Tuesday - Saturday and some weekday afternoons. Most shops close on a Monday morning and all day on Sunday but open 9am-1pm and 4pm-7.30 pm on other days including Saturdays. Banks are usually open Monday to Friday 08.30 - 13.20 14.45 - 15.45 and are closed Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.

Restaurants such as pizzerias open evenings from around 8pm Tuesday through Saturday and some are closed Sundays and Mondays. Some restaurants open for lunch from around 12.30 or 1pm but don’t expect to find pizza served at lunchtime as many restaurants only serve pizza in the evening.

The Taormina area also includes the beautiful and historic Valle d'Agro where all close there are the sea villages of S.Teresa di Riva, S. Alessio Siculo, Furci Siculo, Roccalumera and the hilltop villages of Savoca, Forza D'Agro, Casalvecchio and other small ancient medieval villages,

Savoca village was chosen to stand in for the less-photogenic Corleone: also off-limits because the real Mafia were none to keen on Coppola's project. When Michael and his two companions are walking in the hills, they see this picturesque village in the distance - which I think is actually nearby Forza d' Agrò - and one them remarks "Corleone".

But later, after Michael's wedding, they do walk down from the church in Savoca to Vitelli's Bar on the piazza for the reception. The table where he sat earlier to ask the padrone for the hand of his delightful daughter Apollonia is still there, and you can sit at it to sample the famous granita di limone (which is the second reason for making the journey to Savoca).

The third reason for a visit is the Convent of the Frati Minori Cappuccini, which you will have passed on the road up to the town - or more precisely, the Catacomb which lies beneath. You pay a small sum to the custodian, and then pass through a trapdoor, down a rickety wooden ladder into the crypt. Unless you've seen the similar sight at the Cappuccini in Palermo, nothing can prepare you for what you are about to see. Around the wall in glass cases or coffins are the corpses of Savoca's worthies, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Most are in a standing posture, and still wearing the appropriate dress for their professions in life.

Few horror films could compare with the grisly reality of sharing a crypt with 35 or so decayed corpses, some 300 years old. The fact that some have been daubed with green paint by vandals only adds to the effect. Having an ancestor here is a source of great local pride.

“Highly recommended traditional Sicilian villa.”

Reviewed 22 Aug 2016

Had a wonderful holiday at Villa Siciliana. Beautifully situated in a quiet location in the hills, the immaculate traditional Sicilian villa and stunning pool had everything thing we needed for a restful and comfortable holiday. Gianfranco was an excellent host and couldn't do enough to help, treating us to his lovely wine and recommending excellent restaurants and places to visit. When we had a problem with our car, Santi, the manager, personally helped us sort it out. Nothing was too much trouble. Our experience of dealing with Santi exceeded our expectations as we found him to be a genuine, kind host who went out of his way to ensure that we had a great holiday.

“Perfect Sicilian experience in a beautiful villa”

Reviewed 27 Oct 2013

My husband and I booked Villa Siciliana for our honeymoon and it turned out to be the perfect place for it. The villa is beautifully decorated in a very traditional Sicilian style, while still retaining all the comfort of modern amenities. It couldn't have been easier to find the villa as we were met promptly by Gianfranco at an appointed time & place and he brought us straight to the villa. We were immediately struck with how beautiful the villa & it's surroundings are. It's a very private location, there are no overlooking properties so it feels wonderfully secluded. The pool is a great size, there are outdoor shower/toilet facilities & loads of sun loungers, chairs etc. In fact if you get the weather, which you probably will, it being Sicily, you could spend nearly all your time outdoors here as there is a couple of great seating areas, a huge barbecue (which was set up and ready for us to use straight away when we arrived), an outdoor food prep are & a pizza oven! Also a great lighting system, which really showed off the pool and terrace to advantage when we were sipping wine as the sun went down. However if there is a rare bout of bad weather the interior of the villa has everything you could possibly need for a cosy time indoors, including tv, wifi, hifi and fully stocked kitchen if you feel like cooking. Gianfranco and Christian were so friendly and helpful as well. They had a very welcome platter of meats, cheeses, olives, bread & fruit waiting for us when we arrived along with two bottles of locally produced wine. This was free of charge and really thoughtful of them to provide after our long journey. They even had traditional Sicilian music playing which really helped set the atmosphere! In fact Gianfranco dropped in a couple of times over the week with some local delicacies for us to try, which was so nice of him. The surrounding area is lovely too, with some lovely restaurants in nearby St Teresa di Riva, which Gianfranco will tell you all about, and of course Savoca, of The Godfather fame, which seems pretty much unchanged since Coppola filmed there and is a really charming village to stroll around, with some great restaurants (including the famous Bar Vitelli), beautiful churches and spectacular views down to the sea. Taormina, with all its sights & beautiful beaches, is also pretty accessible from the villa. The only possible drawback (although it wasn't for us), is that a car is necessary for a stay in this villa, as there is very little within walking distance. Although everything you could need is only a very short drive away, everything requires a car to get to. This actually worked really well for us as we used the car to explore the surrounding areas during the day, including Taormina, Etna & Syracuse and spent perfect evenings at the villa swimming, barbecuing and drinking wine on the terrace. One other possible drawback is the mosquitoes, which were pretty voracious when we were there. The owners helpfully provided insect repellent when we arrived, which was great, as I'd neglected to bring any. After we slathered ourselves in that they left us alone, for the most part. In all, I couldn't recommend Villa Siciliana highly enough, for a relaxing, secluded holiday. The owners went above & beyond at all times to ensure we had a great experience. It was great for the two of us but we also plan to go back with our families & friends in the future. i just hope I haven't given it such a good review that it's booked out when we want it!

“Fantastic villa with ever attentive owners in a beautiful secluded part of Sicily”

Reviewed 6 Aug 2013

We had a fantastic time staying at the Villa Siciliana, the owners Gianfranco and Mimma, along with their children Christian, Floriana ans Vanessa, could not have been more helpful. They met us at Toarmina to take us to the villa, and stocked the fridge with the basic needs plus a lunch platter, they then proceeded to leave us presents of biscuits and cakes and the odd bottle of wine during our stay. From advice on where to go to, to sorting out dinner reservations, even moving furniture about for us, nothing was to much trouble for them. The villa, located about 5 minutes from the coast, was nicely secluded and safe and was in an excellent condition with all the equipement you would expect at home, and the patio area and swimming pool was fabulous. The location was very convenient either to go to the local beach or to Isola Bella for a spot of snorkelling and with the local supermarket only 5 minutes away. We spent a number of evenings at Toarmina, which is about 20 minutes away, parking in one of the large multi storey car parks that give easy access to this lively and fun town. We spent a couple of evenings up at the mountain hugging town of Savoca, having a few drinks at the Bar Vitelli famous for the filming of The Godfather, which is at the end of the road leading to the villa (and after an exciting car journey up the narrow winding road). We also made use of the fantastic outside bbq, which was thoughtfully restocked with charcoal the next day by Gianfranco. Our two teenage girls really enjoyed their stay at the villa, spending most of their days in the pool before often heading off to Toarmina in the evening. We have stayed a number of times in villas in Sicily with this being the most pleasurable, due to the condition and location of the villa and the lovely and helpful owners and would not hesitate to recommend it. Grazie to Gianfranco, Mimma, Christian, Floriana and Vanessa for such a wonderful holiday and we hope to see you all again soon.

Dear Sir & Madam, thank You very much for your wowww Wonderful Review! We can proudly say that VillaSiciliana is wonderful as well its owners! “Wow! Gorgeous place. Owners Gianfraco and Mimma delightful!”

Reviewed 26 Jun 2013

We were met by Gianfranco off the motorway. Arrived at the villa which is simple but beautiful, to find a lovely plate of local specialities, a bottle of wine and home made bread (made by Gianfranco's mother). The grounds and pool are just super! Brand new smart loo in the garden and great shower. My 11 year old never had a shower in the house, she always had one in the garden. Gorgeous view over to the coast. Fantastic place to sit and drink a cool glass of wine in the evenings. You can walk to the local alimentari for basic stuff. There is also a pizzeria nearby where you can bring a takeaway back if you can't be bothered to cook. There is a bread shop nearby too but it is sometimes difficult to persuade the baker to part with her bread as she seems to save it for the locals! Mimma took us to the supermarket the following morning in the nearby coastal resort of Santa Teresa di Riva which is about 2 km away, and introduced us to the local fishmonger who sells the most amazing sea food and fish. We bought some on 3 nights and cooked it on the barbecue - yum! Gianfranco will also recommend restaurants to go to if you wish. Savoca, up the hill a couple of km s is worth a vist. They filmed the Godfather here. You really need have a car because the coast is a bit too far and for shopping purposes. There are also lots of other places nearby that you should visit. Too many to list! The house is secure with an automatic gate and you can park the car safely on the premises. On the last morning Gianfranco and Mima and their daughters (one is the same age as mine) came to say goodbye and brought us a present of a Sicilian Speciality. One word of warning - If you are an adult staying upstairs watch your head on the low beam! I have already recommended Villa Sicilian to lots of friends. Thank you Gianfranco and Mimma!

Dear Lady & Sir, thank you very much for your kind and beautiful testimony, was really a great pleasure to have you as Guests! As you have noted that our management of private owners of Villas, our priorities are honesty, respect and great care of our Guests, we do our best that our Guests enjoy a nice stay and also absolute privacy and private ownership of all property! (who choose a villa....we know well the reason!) We hope to see you soon again in our villa! Our best wishes, Santi

“Stop searching: this is it! Beautiful villa with great pool only 20 minutes to Taormina”

Reviewed 19 May 2013

We stayed in Villa Sicilia for two weeks (April/May) and had a great time, thanks to sun, pool, Sicilia and - last but not least - the warm hospitality of Gianfranco and Mimma. The first day they waited for us at the highway to show us around, and every now and then they came around to check if everything was allright and to bring us wine, cannoli, ice etc.. They cleaned the pool, watered the garden and gave us all the (local) information to make out stay wonderful. The villa itself is situated in the hills of Savoca, where you really blend in the Sicilian way of live. By car it is only a few minutes to the sea, 10 minutes to the highway and 20 minutes to Taormina. But it is always with some hesitation to get in the car, because you never want to leave the terras and pool. It is easy to make your own diner in the outside kitchen, but of course you'll try the restaurants and trattorie in the neighbourhood (even if you don't like fish ;-) ). Be warned: once you visited Villa Sicilia you never want to go home again. Gianfranco & Mimma: thanks for a great holiday!! (visitors from Holland).

Dear Sir & Madam, really many thanks for your so nice and kind Review! Our best wishes to You & Family! Santi

“A gorgeous villa nestled in the foothills of the Peloritani mountains with views of the sea”

Reviewed 4 Nov 2012

This was our first villa holiday, and it proved to be a superb choice! Situated on a hillside at the edge of a small village, surrounded by olive groves, this is an ideal location for those looking for peace and tranquillity. The villa is an old house which has been rebuilt, but still retains it's rustic charm, with a lovely wooden ceiling in the master bedroom. The house has been furnished to a high standard and contains modern facilities throughout. The open-plan kitchen and lounge space was plenty big enough for us as a couple (we spent most of our time living outside on the terrace) and would comfortably accommodate children, who we imagine would love the "doll-house" feel to the upstairs attic bedrooms, although younger ones might need help with the stairs. The terrace is divided into two levels with the upper terrace outside the house containing a dining table, barbecue area and swing under a magnificent tree. From here you can look down the valley to the sea. The lower terrace contains the pool, sun loungers and outside (heated) shower. The pool was great, and even in October the days were warm enough for a pleasurable swim. The villa is situated 10 minutes drive north west of Santa Teresa, in the foothills below the village of Savoca (a 15 minute drive up the hill). We travelled to Sicily from the UK by train and after catching the boat-train across to Messina (this experience is a must for railway enthusiasts), we were met at the Taormina railway station by Santi's colleague (Santi's company handles the booking) and the villa owner Gianfranco. The villa is a 40 minute drive from Taormina, and when we arrived we were met by Gianfranco's wife and son who had prepared a cold platter of food for us, stocked the fridge with a bottle of wine and tuned the TV to the BBC! During our week long stay Gianfranco popped-in once a day to clean the pool, water the plants and check everything was OK, often bringing with him a small pastry from the local bakery for us and on one occasion even a loaf of his mother's home baked bread. Nothing was to much trouble for Gianfranco and we cannot express enough our gratitude to him for making our stay so pleasurable. As we didn't hire a car for our stay Gianfranco gave us a lift to the supermarket at the beginning of the week, and even took us on a tour of Savoca and Taormina one evening. Whilst we were very content to stay in the villa for a week and relax, for those wishing to explore the area or with children then we would probably recommend hiring a car. The village bakery and tabac (grocers) were a 15 minute walk away and provided the additional fresh food we needed during our stay. We had a great holiday and hope to return one day, we highly recommended this villa for those looking for a peaceful spot to enjoy the Mediterranean climate.

Dear Sir and Madam, thank you very much for your beautiful testimony of VillaSicilian and its around area. We try to be more precise as possible in the description of the Villas. Our policy is to be honest it is not only right, but also convenient for both. As with all our Villas, our great satisfaction, as always, it is when our Guests when they arrive they say, "but this is even better and more beautiful than the ad"! We can say that this always happens and this very gratifying to us! We do our best, so that our Guests are treated with honesty and kindness. We are very happy that you have enjoyed your stay. If you return, it would be a great pleasure and an honor for us! Best wishes, Santi

We loved our stay here. The owner was extremely generous and even came over on the Sunday morning to show us around. It was convent for Taormina and other places to visit on the East coast. As we were only there for a week it was just great to relax by the pool. The beds were quite firm! Very clean and well looked after. Great outside BBQ.

Dear Sir and Madam, thank you very much for your beautiful testimony of VillaSicilian and the area. We do our best, so that our Guests are treated with honesty and kindness. We are very happy that you have enjoyed your stay. If you return, it would be a great pleasure and an honor for us! Best wishes, Santi
