The Sicily region

Sicily has a Mediterranean climate with mild to warm, wet winters and warm to hot, dry summers.

Sicily has its own rich and unique culture, especially with regard to the arts, music, literature, cuisine, architecture and language, having given birth to some of the greatest and most influential people in history.

The island has a long history of producing a variety of noted cuisines and wines. The ingredients are typically rich in taste and the savoury dishes of Sicily are viewed to be healthy, using fresh vegetables and fruits, such as tomatoes, artichokes, olives (including olive oil), citrus, apricots, aubergines, onions, beans, raisins commonly coupled with sea food, freshly caught from the surrounding coastlines, including tuna, sea bream, sea bass, cuttlefish, swordfish, sardines, and others.

Each town and city has its own patron saint, and the feast days are marked by gaudy processions through the streets with marching bands and displays of fireworks.

Sicilian religious festivals also include the presepe vivente (living nativity scene), which takes place at Christmas time.

This land was colonized and dominated from a wide variety of foreign people, from the Greeks in750 BC and Carthaginian , from Germanic tribe known as the Vandals in AD 440 and another East Germanic tribe in the form of the Goths in 488. With the Byzantines in 535 for the second time in Sicilian history, the Greek language became a familiar sound across the island.

As the power of the Byzantine Empire waned, Sicily was invaded by the Arab forces in 652.The Arabs initiated land reforms which in turn, increased productivity and encouraged the growth of smallholdings, a dent to the dominance of the landed estates. The Arabs further improved irrigation systems.

By the 11th century Norman mercenaries conquered Sicily from the Arabs and during this period the Kingdom of Sicily was prosperous and politically powerful, becoming one of the wealthiest states in all of Europe; even wealthier than England.

After the Expedition of the Thousand led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, Sicily became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1860 and Garibaldi announced his dictatorship in the name of Victor Emmanuel II of Sardinia. An anti-Savoy revolt pushing for Sicilian independence erupted in 1866 at Palermo; it was quelled brutally by the Italians within a week.

The old town of Taormina draw visitors from all over the world. Many others places to visit are the

Archeological park Valle dei Templi of Agrigento, Villa Romana del Casale of Piazza Armerina, The Aeolian Islands (Natural site), Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto (South-Eastern Sicily), Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica, the Castles in Gela, Catania, Milazzo, Sant'Alessio Siculo, Maniace and many others.

Mount Etna , also known as Muncibeddu (beautiful mountain in Sicilian) and Mongibello in Italian is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, close to Messina and Catania. It is the largest active volcano in Europe, currently standing 3,329 metres (10,922 ft) high, though this varies with summit eruptions. It is the highest mountain in Italy south of the Alps. Mount Etna is widely regarded as a cultural symbol and icon of Sicily.

The Chestnut Tree of One Hundred Horses is the largest and oldest known chestnut tree in the world. Located on Linguaglossa road in Sant'Alfio, on the eastern slope of Mount Etna in Sicily. It is generally believed to be 2,000 to 4,000 years old.

Taormina Mare Mazzeo

At the foot of the elegant cone of Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, the territory of Taormina boasts an extraordinary heritage of archaeological finds and architectural masterpieces. There are many themes, and if you follow them, you’ll discover a variety of treasures which few other regions in the world are able to offer.

Thanks to the exceptional jubilation of multicoloured scented flowers and flourishing sun kissed Mediterranean vegetation, the Northern Ionian Coast between Messina and Catania is considered to be the exotic heart of Sicily: those in search of the sea will find more than one reason inTaormina to visit an enchanting coast, dive into blue waters which, thanks to the sea currents, have always a pleasant temperature, and explore animated sea beds just waiting to be discovered, characterised by bright, ever-changing colours.

That’s the ideal place to stay, whether you are a family, a couple or single traveler, actractive for everybody. Thanks to the mild Mediterranean climate it allows pleasant stays from February to November.

The sea of Taormina is undeniably beautiful and our beach, the Bay of Mazzeo is a seaside destination, with many establishments and restaurants with local gastronomy, featuring fish fished fresh from the sea.

Not far The Isola Bella Nature Reserve, called the“Pearl of the Ionian Sea”, is a little piece of uncontaminated nature rich of fauna and flora, which is unique in the world. Excellent snorkelling or diving will give you the opportunity to discover the variety of multicoloured fish, molluscs and tiny transparent or iridescent sea creatures that populate the splendid Isola Bella Nature Reserve and the Taormina Coast .

Boating trips are available and accessible to everyone .

Up in Taormina there are a myriad of cultural and theatrical appointments, including the famous Taormina International Film Festival and Taormina Art, during which, every year, in July, classic prose, dance, concerts and films of international acclaim are presented in the prestigious setting of the Ancient Theatre

All the small surrounding towns are individual places to discover, each one with something of special, like the Castel in Sant’Alessio, the mummies in Savoca, …

If you like the mountain, just driving 30 minutes you will reach the Etna Park, crossed by lots of different paths, starting with the Nature Trails.

Interesting potholing excursions can be alternated with trekking and a variety of other types of excursions with a varying degree of difficulty, some of which are for experts only.

Without going to the extreme, mountain bike and cycle tourism represent ideals ways of actively exploring the Park, enjoying its striking flora and fauna

At the end Golfers won’t be disappointed by the Picciolo Golf Club, the island’s first golf course, offering 18 exciting holes in the beautiful Etnean setting, just 30 minutes of way to reach it.
