Forty kilometres of coast in the wildest part of Sardinia, sheer cliffs dotted with coves and beaches that are the real jewels of the Mediterranean. One of the last natural paradises, where faunistic species such as, the Corsican seagull, the peregrine falcon, and the crested cormorant nest and live in harmony with the environment, a land that is jealously guarded by the custodians of the territory, the local shepherds whose flocks of goats graze free amid the mountains.

Discover the charm of the Orosei coast, explore the creeks and coves on your pleasant outing, pausing along the way to swim in the most beautiful crystal-clear sea of the Mediterranean. See the Ogliastra islets, Pedra Longa, the water springs of Baus, the cave of the doves, the inlets of Porto Pedrosu and Portu Cuau (on the bottom of the latter is the wreck of the cargo boat Levante, which sank in the 1960s). During our mini-cruise we can stop at the splendid beaches of Cala Goloritzé, the Sorgenti beach, the Gabbiano beach and the beaches of Cala Mariolu and Cala Biriola. In addition we can visit the spectacular “Fico” cave, where the monk seal was last seen.

The modern Tourist Port of Baunei and Saint Maria Navarrese has been inaugurated in 1998, a sure and pleasant shelter in the oriental Coast of Sardinia that can entertain up to 340 boats with a maximum length up to 30 meters. The personnel is competent and cordial and the variety of the offered services are able to satisfy the different demands of the diportistis. From June 2005 the port has been endowed with the "Pequod", the lifter to otherwise allow the access on board of the skilled people, becoming so the "first accessible port" of Sardinia.

In 2006 for the second consecutive time the Tourist Port has gotten the prestigious recognition Blue Flag of the tourist landings, that is assigned for quality of the landing, services and safety measures, environmental education and information. The Tourist Port every year increases his presences thanks to the quality of the services that offers and to the magic scenery where the is drawn the port that from the sense of the nature thanks to the green that surrounds it.

Lotzorai, a friendly Ogliastra village, is located between two rivers, (Pramaera and Girasole), 1000 metres from the seashore, a position that accounts for the pleasant unceasing breeze tempering its summertime heat.

The village is at the centre of a huge amphitheatre formed by Monte Oro that overlooks it from Baunei, and the distant Gennargentu tops standing out against a terse cerulean sky. The mountain semicircle protects this Ogliastra valley from the chilly winters fostering its spring-like climate. For Lotzorai the Roman saying does apply: “Hic Ver Assiduum” here spring is eternal !

Coming from Cagliari, Lotzorai is announced by the Castello della Medusa, the building that dominates the village like a sturdy medieval knight on guard. A rare view can be enjoyed from the castle: the sea below and the tiny isle of Ogliastra, a few hundred feet away from the coast, are so close, one could almost touch them.

Today in the village and in its hamlet Tancau, there are several hotels and restaurants, five camp sites and an area reserved for campers, a large open-air discotheque and many other places where one can spend a pleasant evening.

In the hinterland, just a few kilometres from the village, are interesting complexes of domus de janas and other archaeological remains. Su Padentino (4 km from Lotzorai, on the road to Talana) is a lush forest of century old ilexes, cork-oaks and carobs, with areas for safe barbecues, and a picnic area with stone tables and benches.

Its varying scenery and colours makes Baunei one of the most interesting territories not only in the Ogliastra region, but also on the entire island. Its multi-shaped environment spreads over two of the most important natural monuments in Sardinia: the Supramonte and the Gennargentu.

Baunei boasts spectacular panoramas and lush, colourful forests enriched by fauna e flora. It's the largest territory in Ogliastra and extends to the sea, offering the visitor its natural beauties such as the Cala Goloritzè to the Cala Luna coastline; ripped stacks overlooking the sea like Punta Pedra Longa otherwise known as "Agugliastra" and the nearby seaside village of Santa Maria Navarrese.

We highly recommend visiting its most significant monument, the Torre dei Saraceni, which majestically rises on the beach.
It has the shape of a truncated cone and was built to thwart off the pirates' raids, sometime towards the end of the 1800's, on the ruins of an earlier outpost from the 1600's.

The homonymous medieval chiesa and an antique well close to the tower are also worth seeing. It's distinguished for the richness of its historical evidence even from an archaeological point of view, famous for the pre-historic betilius of Golgo, unique in its kind because of its human-like sculpted face. Unfortunately, the nuraghic complexes of Co 'e Serra and Orgoduri are in quite a state of decay.
Noteworthy are the Tombe dei Giganti of Santu Pedru and Annida, the great monument of Doladorgiu and the Nuraghe Nuragheddu and Alvu.

One of the most interesting sites is the Medieval church of S. Pietro in Golgo, close to the town and built in the XVIII Century. It is surrounded by characteristic "cumbessias" where the festivities of the 29th of June are celebrated. For passionate speleologists, this territory offers numerous points of interest, the most important being the Su Sterru pothole located in Golgo. It is the deepest in all of Europe and a frequent destination point for many excursionists.

Situated on the slopes of Mount Santo, the town of Baunei has a charming, panoramic position that dominates the entire area. On its main street, a XVII Century parish dedicated to St. Nicholas appears with its unique dome, painted by Andrea Lusso in 1700-Century style. December 6th the patron St. Nicholas is celebrated and sometime in the middle of August, a fest celebrating goats is held.
The municipality organises various events throughout the year, mostly during the summer, including: evenings of folklore, music and dance where the protagonists are the beautiful costumes enriched by precious materials.

Ogliastra, a fairly recent discovery with its beautiful coasts and mountainous interior. Its territory, wedged between sea and mountain, offers a vast array of unique landscapes. A paradise of remarkable beauty situated along the eastern side of Sardinia, where nature is at its best. Some people think that the name Ogliastra derives from the wild olive trees growing in great numbers in the region, but more credited sources link it to the Agugliastra, a huge monolith overlooking the sea.

The Ogliastra coasts are splendid oases set between sea and rock, rugged nature to dazzle us with some of the most fascinating marine landscapes of the Mediterranean. Leaving from the north we encounter the renowned coves of Cala Luna, Cala Sisine, Cala Mariolu and Cala Goloritzé, accessible only by boat or on foot; further south there are the beautiful beaches of Tancau, Girasole, Orrì, Cea ,Barisardo, Cardedu, Coccorrocci and the gulf of Sarrala.

Enchanting, too is the landscape that climbs up the hills as far as the Gennargentu mountains, indulging the eyes with scenarios of rare beauty. Ogliastra is a land that must be relished slowly, it deserves more than just the hurried glance of conventional tourism. The entire territory is scattered with archaeological monuments, well-worth visiting: Nuraghi, Domus de Janas, Tombe dei Giganti and Menhir.

One can follow trekking itineraries to the discovery of unforgettable places on foot, horseback or by bike, car or land-rover; walking from the mountains towards the sea following underground waterways amid century old forests, flowers, wild animals to reach incredibly beautiful coves. For those who prefer to travel via the sea, an excursion aboard one of the many motor-boats that cruise along the coast is ideal. The Sardinia region

An excursion for nature-lovers amid gorges, crags and caves, searching for the remains of the ancient Nuragic civilisation, in a wild environment. A place- so different from the renowned beaches along the coast – the hinterland is furrowed with valleys and impervious canyons where shady evergreen forests grow.
Cooking in Ogliastra, as in the whole Sardinia, is strictly linked to the occasions of everyday life. This is the reason why here the food is simple but at the same time very tasty: ravioli, roast meat, local wines and bread, the principal nourishment that accompanies all the fundamental events of life, from baptisms to the most important feasts.

In Ogliastra everyday bread is 'pistokku'. Its basis is a mixture of superfine flour and of bran; the dough is kneaded into rectangular or round shapes, then put in a wood-burning oven. As soon as a browned crust appears, pistokku is taken out of the oven and cut in half in order to be toasted. In ancient times, it was the kind of bread suitable for long periods of work far from home, like when the head of the family led his sheep to pasture.

The 'carta da musica' (very similar to 'pane carasau') appears in round, thicker sheets than pistokku and it is made with durum wheat flour, while the cooking process is the same. Lastly 'pani pittau' is the well-wishing bread which lays on the tables on the happiest occasions, like during weddings. It is made with durum wheat flour too but it takes very original forms because of manual dexterity of local women.

The first course par excellence are 'culurgionis', a variety of ravioli stuffed with potatoes and pecorino cheese. The dough is the same of ravioli, while the stuffing is made with mashed potatoes and freshly grated pecorino cheese (there are mint- flavoured culurgionis too). By tradition, these special ravioli are hand-made in order to take the form of an ear of wheat. Once cooked, they are arranged in layers and served with abundant tomato sauce and a pinch of freshly grated pecorino cheese.

'Malloreddus' are very small gnocchi, shaped like a shell and made with superfine durum wheat flour; they are usually served with tomato sauce and Italian sausage. Lastly, you can taste the 'fregula', which is a kind of cous-cous; here it is kneaded with the sepia and served with a shrimps and sepia sauce. But Ogliastra specialities are: spaghetti with sea urchins, spaghetti with botargo and the famous fish soup.

Tancau Sul Mare

The principal dish of meat is pork: on the spit, barbecued or buried into a hole and roasted over a bed of leaves and aromatic herbs. Instead, for the few people who appreciate the particular taste of the entrails, the 'trattalia' is the most typical dish of Ogliastra: it is a string of lamb or kid entrails roasted on the spit. But there are savoury dishes for vegetarians as well, like the 'coccoi prena', a kind of flat bread stuffed with mashed potatoes and pecorino cheese (there is a variety with gourd orcourgettes, called the 'coccoi 'e corcoriga'). Otherwise, you can taste the famous 'casu axedu'; it consists of slices of cheese very similar to yoghurt, but thicker, made with sheep or goat milk, or mixed.

Beginning from Santa Maria Navarrese the landscape changes completely and from a jagged coast from imposing rocks and cliffs where they open sudden and sheltered calette, he passes to a characterized coast from wide beaches, Tancau and Lido delle Rose of Lotzorai and the Beach of Girasole, and particularly beginning from Capo Bellavista, a shore of ample beaches starts of thin sand and low waters, Porto Frailis, San Gemiliano, Beach of Orrì, Cea, the Beachof Barisardo with its Tower that he will extend up to the Beach of Cardedu and Perd'e Pera where the rocks they push him up to the sea creating the golfettis of Coccorrocci and Su Sirboni that marks the border with the shore of the Beach of Tertenia, with Capo Sferracavallo and the Beach of Sarrala.
