The Salzburg Region

The Lungau - A world with a unique atmosphere, heavenly landscapes and exciting outdoor sports in the south of Salzburg.

Awaiting you here in the Lungau region is a superlative hiking paradise. The fragrant air of the Alps, the countryside filled with alpine pastures and a colourful carpet of plants and wild herbs spread out before your, along with the tranquil beauty of nature, turn every walk and hike into a memorable experience and provide the enjoyment and relaxation you are looking for.

Nestled between the Radstädter Tauern (Obertauern), the Hohe Tauern and the Nockberge mountains, our region in the heart of Austria couldn't be easier to reach via the Tauern autobahn (A 10) just 100 km south-east of Salzburg.

The Lungau region in the sunny south of Salzburgerland has a deeply rooted living environment with distinctive traditions and a high level of biodiversity and in 2012 was nominated as one of UNESCO's Biosphere Parks. The international UNESCO title distinguishes particularly valuable living areas. Lungau offers a unique combination of real, living traditions, authentic, genuine people, modern infrastructure and breathtaking nature. As Austria's third and largest biosphere park the Lungau is considered a model region for sustainable development.

Tamsweg

Mountains of Hiking Happiness... the best way to describe the opportunities awaiting you in LESSACH.

Tucked away in the lovely mountain landscape of the Niedere Tauern, our little mountain farming village (elevation 1,208 m) is an outdoor summer holiday paradise. Whether you're hiking, cycling, gathering mushrooms, stopping for a bite to eat in a rustic hut or a tavern, the well-wishing hospitality and friendliness of the locals is reflected in the motto "Lessach – the village full of good wishes"

Gorgeous lookouts and numerous crystal-clear mountain lakes are just waiting to be explored and marveled at. Whether in the summer or under the clear skies of autumn!

Both the Salzburg ARNO trail and the Lungau cultural trail wind through the village of Lessach. Along the way, you'll find informational plaques about the general history, architectural history (wooden granaries, chapels, tithe barn, Thurnschall Castle ruins), mining history, and legends of the Lessach Valley.

Situated around St. Paul's Parish Church is the Lessach cemetery. The uniform edging to the cemetery's graves, cast and wrought-iron crosses, and ossuary make it a uniquely Austrian piece of culture as well as an extraordinarily significant site from an art-historical standpoint .

Tradition and Cuisine

Lessach is not only colourful in terms of its natural surroundings. Year-round, particularly on the Sunday before Corpus Christi and during the Feasts of Saints Peter and Paul on the last Sunday in June, you'll encounter multicoloured traditional attire: the red, white, and yellow uniforms of the ceremonial militia and marching band as well as traditional rural garb and festive “Dirndl” dresses.

Throughout the summer months weekly traditional concerts tale place in the square of the main town of Tamsweg and nearly every week you will be able to encounter a traditional Samson parade in one of the Lungau towns or villages.

Every September and October, a famous event called "Schafaufbrateln" takes place, an event that does honour to Lungau mutton. The sheep have spent the entire summer grazing on the lush vegetation of the high Alpine pastures. Potatoes, horseradish sauce, and cranberries are usually served with this regional speciality. Don't forget a sip of homemade schnapps to round out this perfect meal !
