The neighborhood has emerged in the second half of the nineteenth century when began the expansion of urban development of the city to the north. The neighborhood's name comes from the formation of houses then inhabited by the emerging middle class who followed a checkerboard pattern. The main monument of the neighborhood is the Church of Saint Lucia to the tomb outside the walls, in the square where legend has it occurred the martyrdom of Saint Lucia (that explains the second name of the district), which is why on December 13 of each year Luciani becomes the epicenter of the festivities, at the height of the long procession started from the Cathedral. The statue of the patron saint remains there for a week until the date of 20 December the eighth. Here
