The South Wales region

Swansea Welsh: Abertawe, "mouth of the Tawe") is a coastal city and county in Wales. Swansea is in the historic county boundaries of Glamorgan. Situated on the sandy South West Wales coast, the county area includes the Gower Peninsula and the Lliw uplands.

Swansea has a population of about 170,000 and is the second most populated city in Wales after Cardiff and the third most populated county in Wales after Cardiff and Rhondda Cynon Taf. During its 19th century industrial heyday, Swansea was one of the key centres of the world copper industry, earning the nickname 'Copperopolis

Dan yr Ogof Showcaves are approx 10 minutes by car. Big Pit is approx 40 minutes by car. Summer time temperatures can reach 19 - 22 degrees C. Pontardawe is approx 5 minutes by car and has numerous pubs, restaurants and takeaways to suit all tastes.

Swansea

PONT-AR-DAWE, a hamlet in Killybebill parish, in Glamorgan; on the river Tawe, 8 miles N N E of Swansea. it has a post-office, a one-arched-bridge of 80 feet in span over the Tawe, and a church in the decorated English style, with tower and spire 200 feet high, erected in 1860, by J Parsons, Esq.

The Swansea Canal passes through Pontardawe and was constructed by the Swansea Canal Navigation Company between 1794 - 98, measuring some 16 miles long and running from Swansea to Hen Neuadd Abercraf.

There were originally 36 locks on the canal to raise it from sea level at Swansea to 375 feet at Abercraf, and aqueducts at Clydach, Pontardawe, Ynysmeudwy, Ystalyfera, and Cwmgiedd to carry the canal across major rivers.

The canal was constructed to transport coal from the Upper Swansea Valley to Swansea for export, or for use in the metallurgical industries in the Lower Swansea Valley. The period 1830 - 1840 saw the development of towns around the canal; Clydach, Pontardawe, Ynysmeudwy, Ystalyfera, Ystradgynlais, Cwmgiedd, Abercraf came into being as industries developed at those locations.

The name Pontardawe actually means “Bridge on the River Tawe” in Welsh. The stone bridge mentioned was built around 1757 by William Edwards, renowned for building several bridges and even a town in Wales. The bridge was built to connect the parishes of Cilybebyll and Llangiwc, the first church at the village of Llangiwc was built during the sixth century.

Events that take place are Pontardawe Folk Festival mid August. This is an annual event, Cwmtawe 7's rugby is held here in August annually. Dan Yr Ogof Show caves, Oakwood Theme Park, Big Pit, St Fagans and there are Beaches of Rhossilli, Caswell, Langland and Mumbles.

“Lovely hosts”

Reviewed 9 Nov 2011

A great place to stay over and location very handy for visiting the Brecons and coastline. Sue and Bob were so friendly and made us feel very welcome. A lovely view and a comfortable nights sleep. The website shows an accurate portrayal or what you will get. Modern, comfortable and reasonably priced.

“Idyllic retreat”

Reviewed 7 Oct 2011

This is a wonderful, 'get away from it all' location. The log cabin is very well furnished and equipped, very cosy and comfortable. Suitable for up to 3 people, might be a bit of a a squeeze for 4. Owners on hand if you need anything but not intrusive. Wonderful views over Pontardawe and easy access for Brecon, Gower and other tourist sites. We loved it!

Owner's reply: We appreciate your comments - Thank you
