The Poitou-Charentes region

The Charente Maritime region is famed for its record sunshine hours and has a hot sunny summer climate second only to the Cote D Azur. With a cooling Atlantic breeze, a suntan is a gimmie but not at the expense of hot uncomfortale nights.

The cottage is situated in the sleepy village of Villeneuve La Comtesse, an ideal location for seeing all of the area's hot spots. The village itself is surrounded by sunflower fields. A two-minute walk brings you to all local amenities, which include a bakery, post office, hairdressers, mini market, bar-restaurant, chemist and railway station. The main house overlooks a park – with another park a short walk away that has children's activities. The area is also superbly suited to cyclists, with plenty of quiet roads in and around the village.

If the village doesn’t satisfy your local needs, there is also a choice of quality shops, markets, bars, restaurants and banks in Surgeres (10 mins), St Jean D’Angely (10 mins) and Loulay (5 mins).

St Jean D'Angely is an historical, vibrant town, with a twice weekly market, bars, restaurants and many other visitor attractions.

Cognac country with its rolling vineyards is only 20 minutes away. Boating on the Charente river is a must in Cognac and Jarnac with the world-famous Courvoisier and Hennessey distilleries on its banks.

The Marais Poitevin ( known as "Green Venice") is picture postcard perfect with its winding rivers and can be reached in just 15 minutes. From several landing stages in the various picturesque villages of this area it is possible to hire a boat (with or without guide) to explore the peaceful meandering waterways soaking up the wildlife and tranquillity and even to stop for a picnic.

Surgeres, famous for its butter, is on the outskirts of La Rochelle and has links with the TGV. A visit to the town's park reveals its chateau and the Romanesque church of Our Lady (Notre Dame).

Golfing is popular in the area with some of the finest courses in the region at Cognac (there’s also a 9-hole course at nearby Surgeres). Walking and cycling are a perfect way to unwind either in the nearby forests or just around the picturesque old villages.

If chateaux are your thing you will find a magnificent example 10 minutes away in the nearby village of Dampierre Sur Boutonne situated in the green valley of the river Boutonne. Its well-known renaissance chateau is built on an island in the river.

La Rochelle (1/2 an hour drive) is the jewel in the crown. Around the harbour restaurants galore entice the fish lover, whilst along the cobbled streets of the town the hundreds of boutiques and gift shops will have many a shopaholic melting the plastic! The spectacular Aquarium (complete with sharks!) is a wonderful experience and a good day out for everyone.

Connected to La Rochelle by a bridge over the sea is the beautiful Ile de Re (frequented by Parisians and celebrities) with its white washed villages. Further down the coast lies the Ile D'Oleron, famous for its oyster parks. This island is also reached by a bridge from the mainland near to the town of Marennes. The island features long sandy beaches to one side, whilst to the other is the wilder, more rocky and windswept stunning Cote Sauvage. With a good choice of restaurants, many of which specialize in freshly caught seafood, the island is well worth a visit.

Royan (40 mins) has vast sandy beaches and an excellent nightlife. La Palmyre Zoo at Royan has a lot to offer all the family. Further up the coast is Chatelaillon Plage, with its 3km of uninterrupted white sands where the locals enjoy windsurfing and parasailing.

Poitiers, to the north, boasts the theme park Futuroscope, which is a firm favourite with kids and adults alike. Also Zoodesee, a zoo of European Fauna set in the heart of the Chize forest, is well worth a visit.

The ancient town of Saintes is 45 minutes away and lies on the main ancient pilgrimage route to Spain. The river Charente runs through the town, which has a good variety of shops and restaurants along side beautiful historical architecture.

Only 1 and a half hour’s drive away via the easily accessible A10 is beautiful metropolitan Bordeaux. The countryside around Bordeaux is packed with vines and is home to such famous villages as St.Emillion whilst the city itself is alive with fantastic architecture, gardens, restaurants, specialist wine stores and boutiques.

Central to many attractions including the coast, Cognac, the Marias Poitevin, Aulnay forest, the area is flat and ideal for cycling. Quant hamlets and villages are dotted round sunflower and maize fields, many with little markets and bars.

La Rochelle has a dusk till dawn appeal and is ideal for shopping, eating and boat trips. 2 islands are connected from La Rochelle and nearby Marennes. Local seafood speciaties include Moule Frites which are outstanding in front of the habour.

Surgeres holds regular markets and has a good array of restaurants and public parks.

Aulnay is 15 minutes away and offers French charm in the form of markets, churches, forests and much more..

The Marias Poitevin is Frances answer to the Norfolk Boads and can be reached within 20 minutes.

“Great for a break from it all”

We visited Maison du Puits with friends for a break from it all, and got just what we needed. We found there to be plenty of room for all of us to enjoy our holiday without getting in each others way and particularly liked the large kitchen (and the large bath!). The house has lots of character which is great if you like older properties like we do. We thought we might miss out on a few things by visiting so early in the year, but we were very pleasantly surprised by the weather - sunshine nearly every day - lovely. We found there to be plenty of lovely restaurants to visit a short drive away. The one that we walked to in the village was a liitle quiet, but good food. We really enjoyed the markets too - worth getting up early for. Thanks to Tim and Lucy and their caretakers for a lovely stay, and also for the bottle of wine on arrival - much appreciated after a long journey! Mel

“Large home from home”

We had a superb time in Maison Du Puits, our first visit to France as a family. We are (or were) package holiday people but decided to give the “quick hop over the channel” in our brand new car (complete with roof racks) a try and are very pleased we did. The kids had everything with them, including Toms favourite Elephant (not full size!!) The house is lovely and rustic, very comfortable for us, we even had a bedroom free because Tom and Anna just “had to have” to large bedroom together – really sweet. The pool is in full sun all day and lovely although we hadn’t realised it was shared until we got there so be aware of that. It is shared with the little housse at the back but that only sleeps 2 so its fine. I loved the bath and the massive kitchen and Rodger loved the big TV! Typical! The restaurant in the village is pretty average but good value and something to fall back on. We ate out several times in other villages a short drive away and LOVED La Rochelle, an absolute highlight, you have to visit “Les Quatre Sergant” It is honestly the most magical place we have been, a double height atrium with trees lit up inside, so theatrical! yes it was a fortune but we didn’t care!!

“A wonderful house”

This is our second visit to Maison Du Puits and it didn’t disappoint again! This time we took the upgrade and rented Le Petit Logis at the same time so we could bring Jane’s Mum and Dad. Well it worked out perfectly as they are early to bed early to rise type people so they had their own space in the morning and the evening and joined us on day trips and for dinner most nights. It was also great for the pool with it being tucked round the back, nice and handy for that cool beer!! The weather was glorious for the whole time except one day when there was a storm but the kids loved that! I would recommend this house for a family who want to have a nice big chunky property with all the comforts from home like a dishwasher, washing machine, big tv with English channels etc, and choose to share the pool with only a couple right round the back and out of the way or do what we did and take it all privately. We had a wonderful holiday and will be back!!

“rustic ? amature renovation more like”

This owner shows this house as two properties one in La Rochelle and then in St Jean de Angley property number 72974 and 20413 ?? whichever it is it still has an old caravan dumped at the side of the pool along with the buiding rubbish, the decking to the pool is a danger to adults for children madness, you cant have different thicknesses of timber you trip over joints, as to the walls around pool these are at the point of collapsing A REAL DANGER, The photos are no reflection on this property now it is a very poor renovation and quite dirty, I asked for second clean this cost 30 Euros just for two bathrooms For it does not have 3 as stated Our bed in particular was disgusting it had been soiled and covered by mattress cover, I had to buy another so that my wife did not see it, otherwise things would have hit the fan and our holiday terminated, with 4 adult children and 2 grandchildren with us I had to keep things very quiet, but not a nice 14 nights in that bed I could go on but take note of all problems and get caretaker to sign if not say goodbye to part of your deposit

Firstly we would like to thank this guest for bringing his issues to our attention. However, we do feel that this review is unfair and so would like to respond to it as follows. We have 2 houses to let, the main house which is a 3 bedroom property, and also a 1 bedroom gite to the rear of this main house. We advertise the main house on its own on one advert, and then also the main house with the gite included as extra accommodation on a separate advert, hence the 3rd bathroom on one of the adverts. The two different town names given are simply because the property is relatively close to both and we happen to have picked one for one advert and one for the other. Our guest has failed to understand this. Yes, our own caravan is stored on the property, and there are some stones piled up, but both are in the very corner of the parking area and not in fact next to the pool. The pool is its own separate walled area. It is true to say that the decking has been repaired in places and we take on board the guest's comments about this. We will be replacing the decking with hard standing for the 2012 season. A few stones have come loose from the wall. This has happened late in the season. However, we feel that it is an exaggeration to say that they are at the point of collapsing. Again, we will be making the necessary repairs in spring 2012. We would like to apologise to our guest for these problems and thank him for bringing them to our attention. The guest has commented that our photographs of the property are no longer a fair representation but we can say that the majority of them were taken only in 2010, and so this is not the case. The guest's opinion that the standard of the renovation is amateur is subjective and we have had many comments to the contrary. The "second clean" that the guest refers to, was in fact a mid-stay clean especially requested by them when booking, and not a second clean due to the property being found dirty. The customer also requested a mid stay linen change when booking. The mid stay linen was provided and the customer then asked for the beds to be made up for them. The 30 Euro charge that the guest has mentioned was to cover his mid-stay clean and also the caretaker time taken to make up the beds as requested. We spend approximately £200 per week on cleaning, gardening and maintenance which we feel demonstrates our commitment to keeping the property pleasant for people. With regards to the guest feeling it necessary to buy an additional mattress cover, we would like to point out that we feel that this was not required and that perhaps they were being slightly paranoid, but it is of course regrettable that this is how they felt. We visited the house ourselves only a few days after this guest left and having seen the mattress at first hand we strongly disagree that the mattress was 'soiled'. Admittedly, there were some wear marks on it, but this cannot be described as soiling and to do so is inaccurate. The mattress covers are there to prevent soiling and not to cover it up. However, now that we have been informed that this has caused a problem to a guest, we will of course be replacing the mattress before the next guests arrive. This guest informed both us and our caretakers that he is more used to staying in hotels and being waited on, which is in itself of course no problem, however we have been told that he was, to say the least rude and demanding. Perhaps we could respectfully suggest that self catering holidays are not really for him. We retained a small amount out of this guest's damages deposit for a broken pool net that the guest agreed to be charged for at the time when our caretakers spoke to him about it, but is now disputing. It is made clear to all guests in our terms and conditions that they sign when booking that damages and breakages are chargeable at the discretion of the owners and that in the event that the owners are not present for the inspection of the property the caretakers will inform the owners of damages/breakages found. However, despite this, we have since decided to reimburse this guest for the deduction as a gesture of good will. We would finally also like to comment that we have had many happy guests in the past and so we are very surprised by this review.

“Splendid holiday”

Loveley caracterful house, 2 nice bottles of wine waiting for us, Kath was great and house was spotless. We loved La Rochelle and we had wall to wall sunshine all week. Its the perfect spot for us, only 4 hours from the ferry port. Pool was fantastic, nice and private in its own walled garden near the other cottage. A few more flowers in the garden would have been nice but hey ho thats the only neg I can think of, A holiday we will never forget.
