Location description from owner

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

The Charente Maritime region is famed for its record sunshine hours and has a hot sunny summer climate second only to the Cote D Azur. With a cooling Atlantic breeze, a suntan is a gimmie but not at the expense of hot uncomfortale nights.

The cottage is situated in the sleepy village of Villeneuve La Comtesse, an ideal location for seeing all of the area's hot spots. The village itself is surrounded by sunflower fields. A two-minute walk brings you to all local amenities, which include a bakery, post office, hairdressers, mini market, bar-restaurant, chemist and railway station. The main house overlooks a park – with another park a short walk away that has children's activities. The area is also superbly suited to cyclists, with plenty of quiet roads in and around the village.

If the village doesn’t satisfy your local needs, there is also a choice of quality shops, markets, bars, restaurants and banks in Surgeres (10 mins), St Jean D’Angely (10 mins) and Loulay (5 mins).

St Jean D'Angely is an historical, vibrant town, with a twice weekly market, bars, restaurants and many other visitor attractions.

Cognac country with its rolling vineyards is only 20 minutes away. Boating on the Charente river is a must in Cognac and Jarnac with the world-famous Courvoisier and Hennessey distilleries on its banks.

The Marais Poitevin ( known as "Green Venice") is picture postcard perfect with its winding rivers and can be reached in just 15 minutes. From several landing stages in the various picturesque villages of this area it is possible to hire a boat (with or without guide) to explore the peaceful meandering waterways soaking up the wildlife and tranquillity and even to stop for a picnic.

Surgeres, famous for its butter, is on the outskirts of La Rochelle and has links with the TGV. A visit to the town's park reveals its chateau and the Romanesque church of Our Lady (Notre Dame).

Golfing is popular in the area with some of the finest courses in the region at Cognac (there’s also a 9-hole course at nearby Surgeres). Walking and cycling are a perfect way to unwind either in the nearby forests or just around the picturesque old villages.

If chateaux are your thing you will find a magnificent example 10 minutes away in the nearby village of Dampierre Sur Boutonne situated in the green valley of the river Boutonne. Its well-known renaissance chateau is built on an island in the river.

La Rochelle (1/2 an hour drive) is the jewel in the crown. Around the harbour restaurants galore entice the fish lover, whilst along the cobbled streets of the town the hundreds of boutiques and gift shops will have many a shopaholic melting the plastic! The spectacular Aquarium (complete with sharks!) is a wonderful experience and a good day out for everyone.

Connected to La Rochelle by a bridge over the sea is the beautiful Ile de Re (frequented by Parisians and celebrities) with its white washed villages. Further down the coast lies the Ile D'Oleron, famous for its oyster parks. This island is also reached by a bridge from the mainland near to the town of Marennes. The island features long sandy beaches to one side, whilst to the other is the wilder, more rocky and windswept stunning Cote Sauvage. With a good choice of restaurants, many of which specialize in freshly caught seafood, the island is well worth a visit.

Royan (40 mins) has vast sandy beaches and an excellent nightlife. La Palmyre Zoo at Royan has a lot to offer all the family. Further up the coast is Chatelaillon Plage, with its 3km of uninterrupted white sands where the locals enjoy windsurfing and parasailing.

Poitiers, to the north, boasts the theme park Futuroscope, which is a firm favourite with kids and adults alike. Also Zoodesee, a zoo of European Fauna set in the heart of the Chize forest, is well worth a visit.

The ancient town of Saintes is 45 minutes away and lies on the main ancient pilgrimage route to Spain. The river Charente runs through the town, which has a good variety of shops and restaurants along side beautiful historical architecture.

Only 1 and a half hour’s drive away via the easily accessible A10 is beautiful metropolitan Bordeaux. The countryside around Bordeaux is packed with vines and is home to such famous villages as St.Emillion whilst the city itself is alive with fantastic architecture, gardens, restaurants, specialist wine stores and boutiques.

La Rochelle has a dusk till dawn appeal and is ideal for shopping, eating and boat trips. 2 islands are connected from La Rochelle and nearby Marennes. Local seafood speciaties include Moule Frites which are outstanding in front of the habour.

Surgeres holds regular markets and has a good array of restaurants and public parks.

Aulnay is 15 minutes away and offers French charm in the form of markets, churches, forests and much more..

“nice but dissapointing”

Reviewed 14 Oct 2013

very nice place but was let down by the caretakers who obviously did not carry out an inventory before our arrival, there were many essential items missing, ie broom mop kitchen utensils bowls etc and very poor lighting to cook by. the local ammenaties were also a dissapointment as there was no bar or restaurant, ok if you want to spend your nights indoors the coop is very handy. we met the owners on our second week, very accommadating & nice people shame they are let down by the things they have little control over. lovely place great pool area and outside space but be aware you have to drive if you want a night out.

Owner's reply: Hi John May I say we are very unhappy with this review as we felt we got on great when we visited in your second week and would have thought you could have mentioned these minor things to us. We could have rectified them straight away. Contacting your caretakers on the first week (as we always tell our guests to do if something is not right)would have put this right for you also. I remember you returning a couple of times disappointed that the bar restaurant was closed. I admit this is annoying but it was very late in the season and opening times can vary when things quiet down. To say there isn't one is inaccurate. We are pleased you enjoyed your holiday and liked the property but are very very sorry there were a few items missing. Kind Regards Tim

“Le Petit Logis”

Reviewed 9 Aug 2013

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this charming and rustic little gite. The accommodation was clean and tidy and there was everything we needed for our short stay. The pool was a bit of luxury when the heat got too much and dsespite sharing the pool with neighbours in the big house, our 'days-at-home' schedule seemed to match their 'days-away' schedule. The village was a little on the quiet side but there are ample amenities a few miles along the road and we enjoyed the tranquility - especially the really comfy sun loungers!

Owner's reply: Thank you for your kind review Iain. Its always nice to hear that our guests have enjoyed their holiday. Wishing you well for the furure. Kind Regards Tim

“Beautiful Country Charm”

Reviewed 26 Sep 2012

We stayed here for 6 days in September 2012, and had an absolutely magnificent time. The Gite is beautiful - this sounds like an cliche but it had genuine rustic charm -with the stoney walls and shutters, and we instantly felt at home there. I just think it was an absolute steal - whilst it obviously isn't huge - there was no need for more space. The kitchen had plenty of room, there was a sofa where we could comfortably relax and watch tv, a large and very comfortable bed upstairs and a decent amount of storage. I feared staying in a Gite maybe quite suffocating, but in fact it was completely the opposite - there was more than enough freedom to move around! And more importantly, the space feels very comforting and accommodating. You feel so isolated from the world with the gardens/allotments surrounding you, and as we sat outside on the decking there was barely a sound to be heard (except for the friendliest dog and cat in the world who paid us regular visits). If you are wanting a holiday that avoids the crowds and tourist hotspots, this is perfect - it takes you into 'real' France: the cornfields, sunflowers, villages, local people! It gives you more of a feeling of the true soul of the place. We had a car when we were there (essential) and there were plenty of places to visit, obviously La Rochelle is a stunning harbour town, the beach at Châtelaillon-Plage, the gorgeous towns of Surgeres, Saintes and St. Jean D'Angely..We didn't even have enough days to visit Roquefort or Cognac. For convenience there is a great little Tabac in the village where you can get some basic supplies, as well as a supermarket 10 minutes drive away - so all is catered for very easily. All in all, it was just perfect.. After a stressful year I coulnd't imagine a better way to unwind.. And I throroughly recommend this property.

“Peace and quiet in rural France”

Reviewed 8 Sep 2012

We loved the gite and the facilities. It was quiet and very small, which suited our needs perfectly. The location in the village was lovely although you do need a car to get around. We were also very well looked after by the local caretakers. All ion all, we have a fantastic time and would wholeheartedly recommend it.
