Location description from owner
The England region
Where is Summertown?Summertown is about a mile and a half north of Oxford city centre, reached by Banbury Road or Woodstock Road. Strictly speaking, its boundaries are Squitchey Lane and Islip Road to the north, the River Cherwell to the east, Marston Ferry Road to the south and the Woodstock Road to the west, but it is usually taken to include the streets further north as far as the ring-road, the streets between the Woodstock Road and the Oxford canal and the new houses that have been built on the far side of the canal.Early historyThe Woodstock and Banbury Roads, and Middle Way, were once just three of several rough tracks that led down to the city walls at North Gate. Before the settlement began to develop in 1820, the only building of note between here and the centre of Oxford was an inn, Diamond Hall. This stood on the east side of Banbury Road, roughly opposite the end of Thorncliffe Road. By 1760 Diamond Hall was notorious as a den of highwaymen, and at the end of that century it was replaced by Diamond Cottages, which still survive today.By 1832, about 500 people were living in Summertown, in a mixture of modest houses along the east side of Banbury Road, and a few larger houses standing in sizeable grounds. These were the homes of successful tradesmen, such as butchers and grocers, whose businesses served the growing needs of the city and university populations.
One of Oxford's most exciting new venues, The North Wall in South Parade is a purpose-built arts centre, created THE NORTH WALL ARTS CENTRE. A former Victorian swimming pool, which has won several national awards for its innovative design. The Centre comprises a 240-seat theater, an art gallery, and drama and dance studios. The North Wall aims to fill a gap by offering an alternative to the mainstream, introducing Oxford audiences to award-winning work that does not normally come to the city: shows that require intimacy as well as shows that have a large-scale ambition but fit into the theater's flexible space. The theater also hosts jazz evenings, comedy with (among others) Mark Thomas and Mark Steel, children’s shows, contemporary and classical music, cabaret, and new exhibitions in the modern, light-filled gallery every three weeks . www.the north wall.comThe Turrill Sculpture Garden shows contemporary sculpture in a peaceful garden setting behind Summertown Library. It is freely open to the public. We offer a changing display of work by local and national sculptors, and most pieces are for sale; all profits being re-invested in the Garden.Times of opening are Mon & Fri 09:30-17:30, Tues & Thurs 09:30-19:00, Sat 09:00-16:30. www.turrillsculpturegarden.org.ukSarah Wiseman opened her gallery in 1998, in Summertown, the thriving cosmopolitan area of north Oxford. The gallery quickly established itself as the leading space for contemporary art in Oxford and has been driven forward by Sarah's commitment, energy and keen eye.The collections reflect the gallery's innate passion and love for contemporary art. We work directly with all our artists and have an in- depth knowledge of their ideas and working practices. Our ethos remains consistent; to discover new talent, represent established artists and give people in Oxford a view of the amazing contemporary artists working in the UK today.Sarah Wiseman has a background in the art world. She studied the History of Art at University and worked as a volunteer in the Department of Western Art at The Ashmolean Museum. - Very Good
“wonderful stay in great location”
very well presented and well equipped apartment It had obviously been refurbished and was modern and fresh but very comfortable .As a solo female traveller I felt very safe The location was ideal being on the doorstep of all the facilities of upmarket Summertown but so near to Oxford centre and with good travel links for surrounding area. The owner was very helpful and I would certainly stay again.
Thank you so much for your positive review. We do strive to maintain a bright, clean and comfortable 'home-away-from-home'. We look forward to welcoming you back! With very best wishes, Victor, Chai, Shirley and Adriana
We stayed for a week in September. Flat was in perfect condition, beautifully kept with all equipment you would need. We hired bikes from Banbury Cycle Hire just around corner from flat and got great service from them. We cycled into centre Oxford, along the canal, along the Thames, out to Blemheim Palace and around the beautiful villages in the area. No where was too far away. There were lovely cycle tracks and everywhere looked gorgeous. We had brillant week and would definitely recommend it.
“Perfect - Value for our money”
We recently stayed at this apartment whilst visiting Oxford. It's the perfect location for sightseeing, with Oxford city centre just a 20 minute walk along the Woodstock road or Oxford canal. Summertown is like a quaint English village, with a variety of restaurants, cafes, wine bars and shops so close by. The apartment is super stylish and well equipped, the underfloor heating was very welcome! We arrived quite late at night and were greeted by Shirley, the Manager, who showed us around and had even bought us some basic groceries to get us going. A couple of friends joined us later in the week and were very comfortable on the sofa bed. Our bedroom was an absolute delight, with a huge and very comfortable bed. We had a great time exploring Summertown and Oxford city, we really recommend The Dewdrop Inn, for a typical pub lunch and Browns restaurant on the Woodstock Rd., near the centre. A great location at a very good price. We will be back next time we're in Oxford.
thank you for your kind words. We are thrilled that you were happy with our apartment and had a great time in the beautiful city of Oxford. We hope to see you again. Best wishes, Victor and Chai.
