The Tuscany region

Villanella is ideally situated for touring the inner part of Tuscany and is an excellent base for daytrips to places of cultural and artistic interest such as Florence, San Gimignano, Perugia, Assisi, Siena, Cortona, Lucignano, Anghiari, Sansepolcro, Monterchi, La Verna, Camaldoli and the Casentino National Forest Park.

The Casentino is a narrow and secret valley in the east part of Tuscany, between Arezzo and Florence. Here you can find beautiful medieval small villages, imposing castles, particularly interesting churches for their architectures and for the valuable art of various periods in them preserved.

Subbiano is a small town and comune in Tuscany, central Italy, on the left bank of the River Arno.

It has around 5000 inhabitants and is famous for tipical dishes such as "Pici al sugo di nana": homemade pasta with duck sauce, "Moscatello", local wine with limited production.

"Fantastic villa and host"

Ovidio and his family are wonderful hosts, the villa, the pool, the gardens and the organic vegetables are wonderful. The top floor apartment is very comfortable, with its balcony. The smaller first floor apartment is quite cramped but OK for one, a bit small for two, and somewhat claustrophobic, but, hey, who wants to be inside in Italy! Subbiano has a modern Co-op (for cheap local wine and cheese) and a great little hotel/restaurant (Terre Santa Flora) that is well worth a visit. The kitchens only have gas hobs and basic fridges, so anything more than scrambled egg is a challenge. Two words of warning, the first is the pool attracts a lot of small wasps that try to drown themselves, and will sting you if you brush against them while swimming, so use the provided nets to clear the pool before you swim! The second is that Subbiano is blighted with the Asian Tiger Mosquito, take lots of anti-histamine as these guys fly during the day as well as evening, and they are vicious! We fed back to the owner that he should fit nets to the windows (his own apartment has them) so lets hope that he listens to the feedback! My 81 year old mother in law managed the stairs OK up to the top apartment, but had a fall going down to the first floor apartment one night, and cut her hand, the corner at the bottom of the stairs can be deceptive so it's not perfect for those who are a bit frail. It wasn't a problem for us, but there is some dog noise, the neighbour has two dogs and Ovidio has one (his daughters) and they can kick off at night sometimes. Overall and in truth, a great place to stay, don't let the insects and canines put you off.
