Location description from owner

The Scotland region

Skye has something for everyone; rugged mountains; rolling hills; dramatic coastlines; abundant wildlife; historic castles & ancient ruins; wildlife boat trips and ferries to the Outer Hebrides. After a day of activities, there are plenty of places to eat out.

The Cuillins are a favourite for hill-walkers, climbers and Munro-baggers. The Trotternish Ridge provides a further option as do all the other hills around Skye and many more level tracks, and coastal trails.

Skye offers a peaceful retreat against the spectacular backdrop of its amazing and diverse scenery.

You will definitely want to come back as there is always more to do.

Struan

Ullinish is a coastal crofting hamlet spread along about 2 miles of quiet single track road. We have amazing night skies as there are no street lights and houses are dispersed. All within easy reach of Ullinish: Macleod's Tables, Macleod's Maidens (sea stacks), Dunvegan Castle, Coral Beach, Waternish, Neist Point, Talisker Distillery, The Fairy Pools, Uig (ferries), The Fairy Glen, The Storr and The Quirang (Trotternish Ridge).Portree is only 11 miles away and as the main town in Skye has full facilities, including:Fingal Centre which offers a library, fitness suite, swimming pool, small climbing wall and fitness classes.Aros Centre - arts/cultural activities including theatre, music and movies. There are many small arts and crafts galleries all around the Island and plenty of cafes and restaurants.Sligachan and Glenbrittle are the two main starting points for walking & climbing in the Cuillin Mountains and both can be reached within 30 minutes or less by car from Wild Orchid Cottage. From the door, you can walk across the tidal causeway to Oronsay Island, explore the Ullinish coastline, go beachcombing, or visit the well preserved iron age Dun Beag Broch.

Getting around

There are lots of walking and cycling options direct from the door of the cottage, if you are just interested in chilling and not going too far. If you want to get further afield around the Island, this is definitely easier by car. If you would rather not do too much driving yourself, there are quite a few local tour guides who provide a friendly personal touring service, some specialising in wildlife spotting and/or photography. We can offer some suggestions if you want to set this up before you arrive. There is a bus service to Portree which runs past Wild Orchid Cottage twice per day on school days.

House rules

Pets are very welcome, and we make no charge for them, but it is helpful for the setup of the Cottage if we know ahead what type of pet and how many you will bring, so please include this detail when you are making a booking.

We really appreciate you ensuring you are organised to vacate the cottage by 10am. We have very limited time to clean the cottage and set up for the next guests so we need to get started at 10am sharp!

“WIR SIND ENTÄUSCHT !”

Reviewed 27 Sep 2016

I'm very sorry you did not enjoy your stay, and thank you for providing feedback. We believe we present the cottage honestly: as a cosy, comfortable and family-friendly, as well as dog-friendly place to stay. We don't try to present it as a luxury cottage, and the prices reflect what is on offer, with everything included, as well as making no charge for dogs. The living room furniture was only purchased 2 years ago and two of the four beds were new last year - we constantly renew furniture and equipment on a rotational basis. The table tennis shed in the garden is mainly provided for kids to play in when the weather is not so great - and they seem to love it (as well as many of our adult guests) just as it is - a bit quirky, but fun to hang out in. We do try our best to provide a comfortable base at a reasonable cost for our guests to enjoy Skye, and a lot of people come back to stay more than once at Wild Orchid Cottage. I'm very sorry, and sad, that we didn't manage live up to expectations on this occasion.
