Enjoying privacy and an elevated position along the South West coast of the mainland, Billia Croo provides some of the most beautiful sea views Orkney has to offer. It is a tranquil retreat in the much sought after 'Outertown' area of Stromness, Orkney's main ferry port, which is just a few minutes drive away, although it has a rural feel, surrounded by coast, cliffs and farm land.

The spacious house has three bedrooms: First floor - king/family option with ensuite shower room. Ground floor - king/twin option and double with modern bathroom/shower between. There is plentiful hot water and all towels and bedding are provided. With a stunning panoramic view the sitting room is to the front of the house and kitchen diner to the rear, with back door opening onto a sheltered patio area, a wonderful spot to have a coffee in the morning sunshine, with views of Graemsay and Hoy sound beyond. A separate laundry includes washing machine, tumble drier and a double belfast sink with pulley above - perfect for drying wetsuits and other large items.

The large first floor room offers a kingsize bed and a modern en suite shower room. An extra single can be added to make a cozy family room with generous built in storage. From here you have a lovely view south over Hoy Sound and Scapa Flow.

The ground floor bedrooms can accomodate 4 - 5 people, comprising a double with sea view and twin or king with option of a third single to make a family or triple room. These share a modern family bathroom with shower over the bath.

The quality of light here will entrance you no matter what time of year you decide to come. In mid winter, the sun sets on the horizon right in front of your sitting room window, filling the sky with drama and colour and the spectacle of the aurora borealis at its most vivid is an experience not to be missed!

With a southerly aspect, summer at Billia Croo is glorious! Mid summer sees the long sunlit days and warm twilight known as 'simmer dim' take up almost 23 hours and it never gets truly dark. The brilliant blue sea and huge nightless skies seem never ending, it has a magical quality which words can't describe.

We enjoy a surprising number of mild weather days throughout the year in Orkney due to the effect of the gulf stream and although the winter can be wild with passing squalls and sometimes storm force gales, it is wonderfully exhilarating and dramatic.

Going west from the house along the coast road, you quickly reach the popular West Coast Walk. Climbing up onto the high cliffs of the Black Craig, the stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean as far as the eye can see will take your breath away. It is an invigorating way to begin your holiday especially on a windy day!

The cliff path will take you to Yesnaby and Skaill Bay where you'll find the famous neolithic village of Skara Brae, part of the 'Heart of Neolithic Orkney', a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Further inland, the site also includes Maeshowe burial chamber, The Standing Stones of Stenness and The Ring of Brodgar.

It is too far to cover all of these ancient historic sites by foot in a day – although it is possible by mountain bike! If you'd prefer the relaxed option though, they are all within a ten minute drive of Stromness.

In addition to three supermarkets, there is an impressive range of Orkney produce available to you here and Orkney meat is widely regarded as the best in the country.

For dining out, there is an award winning restaurant 'The Hamnavoe' who also do a takeaway delivery service at weekends. There are three bar restaurants and two cafes in Stromness and plenty of other choice options throughout the mainland. There is also a chip shop in Stromness which serves up fresh Westray Haddock!

We are proud to provide a luxury experience at reasonable rates and look forward to welcoming you to Billia Coo!
