“Home from Home”

Reviewed 25 Oct 2016

My wife and I had already travelled to Lewis at the end of April for a holiday, accompanying our son who had a short attachment at the hospital in Stornoway for 10 weeks. We fell in love with the island immediately. I was lucky enough to have some time on my hands and decided to return on my own (as my wife had other commitments), to do some surfing and also provide a slightly more luxurious base for our son to have for a couple of weeks. The superb cottage we had stayed in at the end of April was unsurprisingly booked for the rest of the season, however I came across Taigh nan Craobh on Trip Advisor, which I think had quite literally just come on the rentals market, and snapped it up for a further fortnight in late June. The name means "House of Trees" I think, and it indeed is extremely unusual for a west Lewis cottage, as it is in an oasis of trees, shrubs and flowers, which are otherwise virtually non existent on the west coast. It is very clearly a much loved family summer home and was a truly delightful place to "borrow". My son worked most weekday so I had plenty of time to walk on the peat moorland, surf at Europie or Barvas or continue my previous explorations of this magnificent island. I actually read Peter May's evocative book "Hebrides" expanding on the sites of his marvellous "Black House" crime trilogy and spent many a happy hour visiting the sites and scenes he has described and photographed. Although I never got to meet Catriona, the owner, she made us feel really welcome, sending a detailed user manual for the cottage before arrival and texting to make sure all was OK. On arrival there was a welcoming bottle of wine and some local cheese and Stornoway biscuits. The house and bedrooms were spotless and extremely comfortable. She had pre-warned me that the cooker was of an "Aga" type and would take some getting used to (unless one has a similar range at home perhaps). What came as a very pleasant and unanticipated surprise was the huge airy conservatory with stunning views over the garden and the adjacent moorland and even the sea in the distance. I spent a few very pleasant afternoons/evenings just sitting in here reading books and weather watching (It does rain rather a lot in the western Isles). My son and I chose to eat our suppers out here especially as it remained light until midnight. The sunsets were incredible. The other really wonderful surprise was the peat store in the garden and the necessary equipment to light real peat fires in the living room. Now I really love the smell of burning peat, but I am aware this might not always be the sentiment of the locals who might have spent years from early childhood having to dig and carry the stuff!! But for me, sitting in front of a glowing peat fire sipping a dram or two of Abhainn Dearg scotch from the Lewis distillery (you have to visit to get this as not yet released to the shops) was my idea of heaven. The cottage has all you will need: a garden and trampoline for kids, well equipped and stocked kitchen; a drying rack over the range for drying the domestic washing; bath/shower room; outside tap and washing line for drying wetsuits etc. Step outside and you are immediately on the moorland and wonderful walking areas. 30 minutes walk or 5 minutes in the car takes you to the coast. Also 5 minutes drive north towards Ness is a modern hotel with a bar and great restaurant. Saider (Shader) is an excellent base for exploring North Lewis and particularly if you surf offers quick access to all the west coast breaks. Even getting to Stornoway is a breeze along the very good trans-island road. Very highly recommended.
