It is a perfect house to recuperate after a hard day surfing, trekking, fishing, hiking or enjoying Stornoway's rich culture.

Location description from owner

The Scotland region

Stornoway is the main town on the Isle of Lewis, with a population of 6,000+ and provides pretty much everything a mainland town of 3-4 times the population would have. There is a Tesco, a large CoOp, Argos, many restaurants, cafes, a golf course, boating facilities, a sports centre, museum and library. So, Lewis may be an island, but it has a lot of facilities.
Culturally, Lewis has strong moral roots and consequently is a very safe place to stay. Historically, there are a mix of Viking, English, Scottish and even some Irish strands in its rich cultural heritage.

Stornoway

The house is situated in the area known locally as Swordale, which is a small village in Point - a peninsula tenaciously joined onto the main island by the Braighe - a thin causeway. There is a community shop and café about half a mile from the house on the way to town. Art, craft, groceries and a chat with the locals is available here. The house is set in a rural location, yet the main town of Stornoway is only 10 mins away by car. The airport is halfway between the town and the house. The views from the front of the house are absolutely stunning and a spectacular feature of the house. The vista allows residents to see the Scottish mainland, South Lochs, the Braighe, and ferries, cruise liners etc., making their way to and from the mainland. The house has some neighbours, but is still private. There is a bus service about 100 meters from the house. There are many beaches and some gentle cliffs within reach of the house as well as a couple of freshwater lakes. A hiking/cycling paradise.

“Perfect location to explore the whole island”

Reviewed 14 Jul 2016

We were four adults and four children flying in from London to explore Lewis and Harris by car. Druim Mor is located just outside Stornoway with lovely views over the sea and the bay in front of it. It takes less than 10 minutes by car to get to the city centre, from where one can choose any direction to explore the island. If not driving, the bus to Stornoway stops 25 metres from the property. The cottage itself is big, easily accommodating our party with room to spare. It has all the amenities required for a comfortable stay, including Wi-Fi for those who wish to spend time on the internet. The owner John is very friendly and was on hand by mobile phone should we have required anything. The land between it and the sea is public, and we wandered around above the cliffs looking at seals in the water below, and the birds nesting along the steep cliff faces. If you want to be very remote, this is probably not the accommodation for you. However, if you want lovely views, the sense of remoteness, but close enough to supplies from town, Druim Mor is a great place to stay at.

Charl I'm glad you loved the view and the location. I remember first arriving at the house and, as soon as I saw the views, I decided to buy it even before I went inside! Families love the house because the space, inside and out, allows them to bring other relatives with them. Sometimes they meet up with friends and family on the island and bring them back to the house for a meal. Hopefully you can come back again some time! John
