Location description from owner

The Devon region

Although only 10 minutes from the A303/A30, Mannings Cottage is surrounded by beautiful rolling green hills and farmland, and therefore enjoys the peace and quiet that comes with this idyllic location. The cottage is ideally situated to allow guests to enjoy the beauty of the countryside whilst being within striking distance of the coast. There are many public footpaths and bridleways for walking and cycling in the spectacular Blackdown Hills around the village. The Jurassic Coast, which was named a World Heritage Site in 2001, is a short 25 minute drive away to Lyme Regis with its sandy beach and boardwalk. The charming fishing villages of Beer and Branscombe are only 30 minutes as are the upmarket towns of Sidmouth and Topsham and the cathedral city of Exeter. The market town of Bridport in West Dorest and nearby villages of Burton Bradstock and West Bay with their popular beaches and restaurants are also only a short drive.

Stockland

Nearer to Stockland, within a 15 minute drive, are Honiton with its antique shops and gastro pub The Holt, and Axminster where guests can visit the River Cottage Canteen. Large supermarkets, local butchers, fishmongers and bakeries are available in both Honiton and Axminster. There is also an excellent farm shop -- Millers Farm Shop -- in nearby Kilmington, which offers a large array of fresh produce and goods, a wet fish bar, wine, products imported from France and a small cafe. There are several good pubs nearby in the surrounding villages, including The Tuckers Arms in Dalwood, The Candlelight Inn in Bishopswood (http://www.candlelight-inn.co.uk) and the Tytherleigh Arms outside Axminster (http://www.tytherleigharms.com).

“It was a beautiful, well equipped, comfortable cottage, in peaceful surroundings.”

Reviewed 8 Aug 2015

We were welcomed by Diana who made the most delicious brownies. The cottage was beautiful and by the end of the week i could have moved in. There was plenty of room for my husband, myself and our three grown up children. There was everything we needed in the house to be comfortable and the level of equipment in the kitchen was great. The conservatory was very useful as the weather wasn't too good on a couple of days. There was plenty to do in the surrounding area, although you have to be careful following the sat nav as it does take you down some very narrow roads! The information left by previous guests is well worth a look as we went to some of the restaurants suggested which were very good. The only thing that would have made it perfect, would have been a local shop or cafe.

“perfect cottage, perfect owner!”

I have stayed Mannings cottage with my sister and her family for 3 nights. It was such a beautiful and clean place to stay with kids. Owner Diana is a very thoughtful and kind soul. We will definitely recommend it to anyone who is looking for a comfy stay. Also there is a home made treat baked by talented baker Diana :) you will love it!

“A weekend wasn't long enough!”

Reviewed 12 May 2015

We chose to stay at Mannings cottage as it is close to Axminster where we were celebrating my son's 30th birthday at the River Cottage Canteen. We needed a well equipped property suitable for five adults and a baby. The cottage ticked all the boxes and more. In fact, we all came away saying we would like to live there! Diana and Julian are fantastic hosts, friendly but not intrusive. The cottage is spotlessly clean, has all mod cons and is stylishly furnished and decorated. The setting is perfect for a relaxing and peaceful holiday. There is a beautifully tended private garden and the only noise is that of birdsong. Oh and Diana makes the best brownies in the world.....

“Great escape to the country.”

Reviewed 11 May 2015

We recently stayed at Mannings Cottage for a ladies weekend away. The cottage was perfect for our needs (5 ladies). It was immaculately clean and the welcome we received from Diana and Julian was second to none. Their was ample parking and weather permitting a great private garden for dining al fresco. During our stay due to poor weather we even got to enjoy the wonderful wood burner on our evenings in at the cottage. The location is convenient for day visits to Lyme Regis, Axminster and all the wonders along that stretch of the Dorset coast.

“A very relaxing break”

Reviewed 1 May 2015

Me, my friend and our two children (2 and 7years) stayed at mannings cottage for a long weekend at the end of April. We had a lovely break. The cottage was really well equipped with things we needed such as Kitchen equipment a great toy cupboard and various options for sleeping arrangements (cot etc.) The only thing I would say if you have young children is there is no bath, but my 2 year old daughter thought it was great having a shower! We were really well positioned for lots of different day trips and enjoyed fossil hunting on the Jurassic coast in Charmouth, a lovely cream tea in Honiton and a trip to Escot to enjoy soft play, getting lost in a maze and playing in the woodland play grounds. Diana was a really helpful host suggesting days out and making us feel very welcome. Its a lovely cottage that I would definitely recommend.

“Beautiful cottage in a fantastic village location”

Reviewed 10 Nov 2014

Very welcoming. friendly owner who provided us with any help and info we needed throughout our stay not to mention, home-made brownies which went down a treat! We loved Mannings Cottage which offered a very high level of comfort and has been very beautifully refurbished. This was certainly the best cottage we have stayed in, in terms of quality and home comforts. We found the village itself very picturesque and anyone we came across friendly. Local walks were great, particularly to The Tuckers Arms, Dalwood, taking in spectacular views along the way, followed by a lovely meal. The coastal areas are within easy access, so this gave us a variety of places to visit. My husband and son took advantage of the tennis court at the Village Hall. We had a very relaxing and easy stay at Mannings Cottage and would definitely like to return in the future. Highest compliments to the owners for making our stay so enjoyable.

“Perfect Family Cottage”

Reviewed 5 Oct 2014

Lovely, cosy cottage. We travelled with our 2 year old daughter and Diana made this a perfect family holiday as there was a full toy cupboard, highchair, booster seat and travel cot provided in the cottage which made packing so much easier and the toys made for relaxing evenings for us. The cottage is in a lovely village with plenty of lovely places to visit and eat nearby. Diana made planning our holiday so much easier with a wealth of information in the cottage on the surrounding area. The cottage was spotlessly clean and was decorated to a high spec and was a pleasure to spend time in. Thank you to Diana for making this a lovely family holiday.

“The best place that we have ever stayed”

Reviewed 6 Oct 2013

The cottage was exactly as described. The location was great as we were attending a wedding in Axminster and then staying on for a holiday, it was in easy reach of many places we wanted to visit. We were so impressed with everything, the kitchen was equipped with everything you could ever want and more, the fixtures and furnishings were of a very high quality. The garden was beautiful, with garden furniture and barbecue provided. Diana and her family made you feel very welcome and baked the most amazing chocolate brownies and banana muffins as a welcoming gift. We would most definitely stay there again and would recommend it highly to friends and family.

“The best cottage we have stayed in”

Reviewed 1 Jul 2013

Mannings cottage is the best cottage we have stayed in, ever. Everything is as we would have wished for, spacious accommodation, large bright dining area, and a good selection of kitchen equipment, not usually found in a rental cottage. Diana is a lovely host, and the treats she left us were greatly appreciated. Mannings cottage is to be highly recommended. The area itself is adjacent to Dorset and Somerset, with lots of places to visit and enjoy. Thanks again for a wonderful holiday.

“Best of both worlds - city comforts in rural setting / close to hills and coast”

Reviewed 16 Aug 2012

Very well appointed cottage in lovely, quiet village in East Devon, within Blackdown Hills.15 minutes drive either way to nice market towns of Honiton and Axminster, or 20 mins to coast. Owner very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about local area - towns, facilities, attractions, restaurants etc. Excellent cottage presentation, and some nice extra comforts e.g. welcome treats, basic larder supplies, spare dishwasher tabs, firewood etc. Good wi-fi connection, and decent mobile reception in house (Vodafone). Conservatory a nice addition, perfect for relaxing in warmth even when raining! In summary, highly recommended for a pleasant countryside retreat, yet offering access to facilities and attractions of Devon/Dorset.
