Description

A new listing. Come and enjoy this idyllic, 18th Century, one bedroomed, cottage set in ¾ acre of tranquil gardens. When you are feeding the birds (seed provided) the chickens will be quick to notice as well! But you will have the benefit of fresh eggs for breakfast. If you are looking for a place to escape from the ‘madding crowd’ then Lane End Cottage is your ideal location. Secluded enough to give you peace and quiet but only 5 miles away from civilisation should you need to see people! There is plenty to do with Sidmouth, Seaton and Lyme Regis only a short drive away, or venture onto Dartmoor National Park (1hr) to experience the wilder side of Devon.

The England region

This is an area of outstanding natural beauty which is well located to take to various different parts of the South West. Within 30 mins you can be soaking up the sun and splashing in the waves at Lyme Regis - part of the Jurassic Coast where you may be lucky enough to find a fossil. Enjoy local festivals such as Lifeboat Week in July. Or alternatively walking along the promenade at Sidmouth with the famous Jacob's Ladder stopping at one of local restaurants for fish and chips and Folk Week. At Seaton you can take a trip on the historic narrow gauge Tramway which travels alongside the River Axe estuary. Beer has the local caves and for train enthusiasts Pecorama. If you prefer the countryside then within an hour you can be in the Dartmoor National Park where you can visit the famous Postbridge an ancient stone bridge. Or take a walk along the Devon Coast path from Seaton to Beer - or further if you are feeling energetic! If you don't want to venture too far and would prefer shopping the local market town of Honiton is only 15 mins away where you can enjoy an open market every Tuesday and Saturday. Or 30 mins takes you into the cathedral city of Exeter with the new Princess Hay shopping precinct.
In addition you could take a trip into Axminster and sample local dishes at Hugh Fearnly-whittingstall restaurant. There are also a number of National Trust houses and gardens all within driving distance, Montacute House, Barrington Court and Killerton Gardens.

Stockland

On your doorstep are a number of footpaths to help you explore the local area with a turberry(common land) opposite where you may be lucky if you are stood at the kitchen window to see deer. It is essential when coming to Devon to try one of our famous cream teas and you do not need to go much further than just over the brow of the hill to Royal Oak Farm where you can sample both a cream tea and pick your own fruit for desert. In the field next to the house are two pairs of nesting buzzards and these can be both seen and heard souring on a sunny day. We are very happy for you to wander around the garden and enjoy the many varieties of cottage garden flowers, pick your own raspberries (as generally once they start we can't eat them quick enough!!) and stand and stare at the fish, newts and frogs in the pond. No doubt you will also catch sight of our chickens who always welcome any spare bread you have going and will come if you call them!! Outside your dining room there will be a wide variety of local birds for you to enjoy and they can be encouraged more by feeding them. As well as the usual we are also fortunate to have nuthatches and woodpeckers visit. (bird seed is provided). At night be prepared to not have to see any light pollution (a torch is recommended) but if you listen and look you may hear owls and see some bats. When it is dark clear night you have an amazing opportunity to view the stars in all their glory.

“Hidden Gem”

Reviewed 24 Nov 2016

Cosy cottage set in beautiful surroundings and perfectly equipped. It felt like home instantly ,especially with the wonderful welcome from our lovely hosts Steve & Angela. Really reluctant to write this review as so want to keep this hidden gem all to ourselves....We will be returning !

Thank you for such a lovely review. We really enjoyed meeting you both. Hoping next time the sheep stay in their field and not the garden!!! Still it was additional entertainment!!! Angela and Steve

“Excellent Peaceful Cottage”

Reviewed 6 Nov 2016

We had a wonderful 3 night stay at Lane End Cottage.....just wish it was longer!!! Angela and Steve went that extra mile plus for us. A lovely hamper and fresh eggs from their chickens. They showed us around the cottage, providing logs and kindling for the log burner, we did't really need the log burner as the weather was unusually warm for the time of year, but we just had to light it (very pretty). The location was perfect, very peaceful, but in easy reach of village and other local attractions. We fed the birds every morning, made friends with the Nut Hatch and the cute little voles!!! The gardens were wonderful, the bed extremely comfortable and the cottage had everything we needed. Cannot fault it or our hosts one bit. Will definitely go back one day.

Thank you so much for such an amazing review. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and that you had chance to see the vole and the variety of birds. We look forward to seeing you again. Angela and Steve

“Perfect peace and comfort.”

Reviewed 5 Oct 2016

This cottage wrapped us up warm and comfortable when it rained all day, but still the birds came to the feeders by the patio. When the sun shone we were able to sit outside and enjoy the peace and beauty of the garden. Everything is provided (although I would have liked one small lidded saucepan) including feed for the birds and Angela and Steve bring produce from the garden and the hens when it is available. To have four living rooms in a 2 bed cottage is exceptional. In fact it allowed us to spread out so much we left something behind which was very promptly posted back to us by the owners who were so helpful throughout.

Thank you so much for lovely review, and we will make sure that there is a small lidded saucepan, thanks for letting us know. Also glad your forgotten item got back to you so quickly. We look forward to seeing you again sometime. Angela and Steve

“Amazing weekend away”

Reviewed 11 Jul 2016

We had the pleasure of spending 2 amazing nights at the cottage. Angela and Steve are two of the nicest people you could possibly hope to meet, their welcome and friendliness all the time of our stay was amazing. The cottage itself is beyond words of excellence, If your looking for a relaxing get away you will be hard pressed to find anywhere better. We are already planning our next trip, hopefully for longer :)

Thank you so much for the amazing review, as we mentioned we are still fairly new to this, and it was a pleasure to hear that we made your stay so enjoyable. We really look forward to seeing you again. Angela and Steve

“stunning”

Reviewed 20 Jun 2016

Great communications from owners, absolutely second to none. We arrived late afternoon and were greeted by Angela & Steve, who promptly made us very welcome and showed us around the property. Lane End Cottage sits within the grounds of the owners property but has its own surrounding space in their well maintained and established gardens. The pictures just do not do the property any justice at all. Don't be put off by it being a one bed room place, it is extremely spacious and well equipped. Bird tables etc..are placed in just the right spots for you to view all the wild life; green woodpecker, variety of tits & chaff finches, jays, magpies, squirrels all visit. You may even be lucky enough to see the barn owl and the bats. The only traffic jam we came across was the farmer taking his Friesian cows back to their field after milking them in the evening. A thoroughly relaxing and unwinding stay enjoyed.

Thank you so much, it was wonderful to meet you both, we are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. Thank you also for the homeopathic cough medicine recipe, I made it up and it has done wonders for our daughter, Tara. We really hope that we will have the chance to meet you again. Angela and Steve
