“Avoid at all costs - expensive and not as advertised”

Reviewed 15 Aug 2016

We stayed at The Villa Serena and booked from 19 July to 02 August 2016. This was during peak season and cost us over £220/280 euros a night as being advertised as a premium option, but as a family we felt compelled to leave after only 6 days for the reasons below. This is without a doubt the worst accommodation set up I have ever stayed in, and in my line of work I stay at approximately 60 different hotels/apartments a year worldwide, with the majority being in Italy. The villa is advertised as “The interiors are bright, new, very comfortable, high quality, modern and stylish”. The interiors are bright, but we disagree with the other statements strongly. In particular the villa was presented throughout in a dirty fashion, it is tired and nothing works! 1. One outdoor light worked in the garden and pool on the first night and although two further light-bulbs were fitted, none worked from night 2 onwards. 2. One of the bathrooms had an insect/ant manifestation. Every night hundreds of ants filled the bath (nest was in the window frame above). Ants and small insects are expected in hot climates (having lived in the Mediterranean for 5 years myself), but this was a manifestation as there were literally thousands that fell into the bath below every night. 3. The pool has multiple raised bolts (presumably for a winter cover) that presented a real hazard for any children running around. 4. Washing was still in the kitchen’s washing machine upon arrival.... No washing powder or any other cleaning items were provided so the increased cost of buying basics for the villa (and leaving them there upon our early departure) was considerable. 5. The kitchen is very small and certainly not “new and equipped with new appliances” as advertised. There are two fridges; one is not used and built in, and the other is a stand alone older model. The walls behind the sink and taps are dirty and stained. The supplied toaster did not work, and the “microwave” as advertised is in fact a stand alone mini oven to complement the 4 gas hob. No cleaning, washing or washing up liquid was supplied, and with the lack of loo roll this was then an immediate additional cost. On the basis that we were paying over £220 a night this was very surprising. 6. Some basic utensils in the kitchen were missing, such as a bottle opener or egg cups, so these had also to be bought quickly post arrival. 7. The sofas in the living room are old and stained, and the cushions did not have covers. 8. If you are looking to have six people staying this will mean that you will be in the living room on the sofa bed and this is not air-conditioned. 9. Bathroom floors and baths were not cleaned, and a third of a loo roll was provided for us as a family of four for a 14 day period... 10. The bedroom chair in one of the rooms still had dark hair on from previous occupants, as did the floors of all bathrooms. The owners clearly did not clean between occupants. 11. Warm (not hot) water was extremely limited – approximately 5 minutes of flow in the evenings which made bathing small children difficult. There is no other hot water unless you boil a pan on the oven ring (no kettle in kitchen). 12. The TV in the living room is old and approximately 15 years old – despite there being a empty box of a flat screen TV up in one of the bedrooms! The apartment is advertised as having new appliances so this is completely misleading. 13. There are two different types of sockets in the apartment -3 thin pronged, and 3 fat pronged. The normal EU 2 prong sockets do not feature, so this made it very difficult to use any sockets in the house at all for personal use. 14. There is a line of grime around the swimming pool walls, despite there being a swimming pool 'cleaner' that does service the pool weekly. 15. The garden is cut periodically but the gardeners literally just go around the chairs, tables and any other objects in the garden leaving them with serious growth below. This pretty much sums up the place! 16. Our flight was delayed by two hours so we had to pay the vila's contact an extra 45 euros to open up the villa for us! We were basically charged waiting time having paid thousands of euros for the stay. Unbelievable. 17. Sheets and towels are extra - 15 euros per person 18. The extra costs for missing cutlery, basics such as washing up liquid 19. You will be charged if you do not clean parts of the villa upon departure, despite the standard it was originally presented in. 20. We had brown water coming through the pipes for the first day which slowly became clearer towards the end of our stay (we left after 5 days despite booking the 10 days). The positives are: 1. The pool is private. 2. The hotel complex close by (5 min car ride) provides one or two restaurants, an expensive supermarket and fun late night entertainment. 3. A bottle of wine was provided upon arrival (but you have to buy the bottle opener which is missing...of course!!)

I'm wondering in which place of Italy in the end of July / beginning of August you was able to rent a villa on 2 floors with a private garden, a private pool, 3 bathrooms and the rental price was less than 2200 euro for 10 days. Sometimes somebody feels important because writes reviews !!! The reviews are welcome but not to say that there was ALSO A DARK HAIR ... After finding so unpleasant thing I would call the responsible and ask a thorough cleaning! As it is written in our rules. According to the rules, not only ours but everywhere, the check-in is expected before 8 p.m. If you arrive within 9 p.m. it doesn’t matter, but if a contact person must wait you after midnight, I would not expect that you ask me an extra, I would make a generous gesture and I would make a gift. There are no egg cups in our villas ... There are bottle openers in all our villas. A bottle of wine was provided upon arrival and you didn’t find a bottle opener. You could simply ask for it! Too many ants, so many ants: the villa in the countryside. The common animals are boars, geckos, ants. This year they are not bothersome: five customers during the season asked for help and it was promptly provided. In any case the ants usually appear where the food is left. Kind regards
