Location description from owner
The England region
Little Moor is a lovely cottage set in the heart of Devon, ideally situated for family activity holidays or for a quiet break, just to enjoy the tranquillity of this beautiful part of Devon. Little Moor nestles close to the foothills of Dartmoor, a short walk from the historic village of Sticklepath, with its two pubs, village shop and café, and the renowned Finch Foundry, owned by the National Trust, the last working water powered forge in the country.
Dartmoor National Park in the County of Devon is a massive moorland area covering nearly 1,000 square kilometres. It is a wild and beautiful area, enjoyed by many as the ideal place to visit. The Moor attracts walkers, cyclists and horse riders, offering some of the most spectacular scenery in the south of England.
Devon is unique in being the only county in England with two separate coast lines. Between them the north and south coasts offer miles of beautiful beaches, charming fishing villages, larger seaside resorts and stunning coastal scenery. Little Moor is situated equidistant from the coasts. Just check the weather forecast, pick the best, and head north or south; either way you can be at the seaside within an hour.
Apart from visiting wild and beautiful Dartmoor, there is so much else to see around the area. Most of the delightful villages around have an annual village fete; a real taste of English tradition. Just 3km away you can visit the annual Folk Festival in South Zeal (early August), or go to the new and exciting Chagstock Music Festival, held in July, 5km from the cottage.
Devon has many historic houses open to the public. Our nearest is Castle Drogo, just 11km away; the last castle to be built in Britain, it is presently undergoing fascinating renovation projects. Surrounded by stunning woodland scenery, it is a great place for a day out.
Famous beauty spots abound. Lydford Gorge (the deepest gorge in the Southwest) owned by the National Trust, is just 20km away, and a walk up to Higher Willhayes (start from Okehampton (6km)), the highest point on Dartmoor, will reward you with stunning views across Devon and beyond.
For younger children, what better than a day out at the Miniature Pony Centre, just 24km away, where they can enjoy meeting lots of ponies and their foals and other animals, plus many other fun activities, a café and play areas.

- Very Good
“Excellent for Kids”
Stayed for 5 days/4 nights - Jenny and Derek were amazing as they let the kids feed the animals. One tip would be to book ahead for dinner in the local pub on a Fri/Sat night.
Thank you, we are looking forward to seeing you here again
Booked a long weekend for myself and 4 x female friends, one with her 2 year old daughter. It was fabulous, owners think of everything. Home made scones with jam and clotted cream a real welcome. We kept the log burner going all weekend, all cosy sitting watching TV with complimentary glass of wine too. Will definitely come back, thank you to Derek and Jenny, fantastic hosts.
Thank you, we look forward to seeing you again
“This was the best place we have ever stayed”
The cottage is beautiful. The owners where great. Loved the homemade scones and wine. All the family loved the animals. Wish we could of stayed longer. Really want to go back.
Thanks Noel, we loved having you and your family here. Hope to see you all again soon.
“Best welcome ever.”
To arrive at a property and find a cream tea with homemade scones and jam, clotted cream, half a dozen of their own eggs and milk available is the best reception I have ever received in self catering. (and a bottle of homemade wine!) The cottage is very well equipped to meet your needs and ideally placed for walking Dartmoor and/or the Tarka trail. One warning, the third bedroom is reached via the second bedroom! Also, caught the top of my head five times on low door between lounge and kitchen. But then, I never learn!
Hi David , glad you liked the cottage. We do make it clear in our description of the cottage about the third bedroom, and we remind any groups of more than four adults about the situation. As for bumping your head, we apologise, you certainly aren't the first person to do that, although, in our defence, we do have very prominent warning signs on both sides of the door. Unfortunately, low door lintels and beams are often a feature of old cottages, some people think it adds to their charm.
Derek and Jenny were lovely. We were their first guests, but they had everything sorted as if they were seasoned hosts. Instructions were everywhere, and the cottage had everything we needed. They also surprised us with a care package of goodies, and had the wood fire lit for us on arrival. The cottage was super clean, warm, comfortable, and in a perfect location for exploring dartmoor. Fantastic. We hope to stay again and would highly recommend it.
