The Tuscany region

The Casentino is the first valley formed by the Arno river; a land of natural beauty, ancient country churches, castles and sanctuaries. The area maintains the appeal of a lesser-known Tuscany where the sense of tradition is still strong, a hidden and still undiscovered corner of the Tuscan countryside, away from the standard and usual tourist routes and destinations.
Many small hill towns, known for their beauty and history, are very close to each other like Poppi, Bibbiena, Anghiari and many others.
Florence and Arezzo are only just over one hour away. Siena and Cortona are lovely day trips from .
The Casentino is an area which maintains the appeal of a lesser-known Tuscany where the sense of tradition is still strong. The wish of its inhabitants of not loosing their bond with past history is felt everywhere. Come and enjoy the Real, Traditional Tuscan Hospitality!
In the mountains around the Casentino the National Park Reserve known as the Parco Nazionale della Foreste Casentinesi offers a number of hiking trails and walks.
The landscape is dotted with castles, ancient parish churches and two of the most important shrines of Christendom: La Verna and Camaldoli.
In the summer you will be able to enjoy several festival and events, as Biannual European Wrought Iron Fair (Stia), Il Gusto dei Guidi (wine festival in Poppi), The Antique Fair and The Saracen's Tournament (Arezzo), Pianoforte (music festival in Pratovecchio) and much more....

Stia

The Borgo del Castello di Porciano offers the peace and hospitality of the upper valley of the Arno River, Casentino.
The owner of the Castle of Porciano has restored and decorated some antique tuscan cottages built in the area once occupied by the age-old walls which surrounded the Castle.
The stone cottages have been renovated respecting their original look and decorated with family furniture which gives a feeling of coziness and warmth. In this small village, at the foot of its Castle, you will be able to experience and explore the natural and artistic beauty of this lesser known corner of Tuscany.
The village stands at 600 meters above sea level, and is only one mile away (1.5 km) from the lovely small town of Stia, built where the Arno and Staggia rivers meet.
The Romanesque Church in the square surrounded by archways is one of the most beautiful pievi (parish churches) of the Casentino. In the summer you will be able to enjoy the park along the river where you can sun yourself, wade or swim in the clear waters of the Arno river.
The sources of the Arno are very near Stia so the water is still clean and pure.

“La nostra vacanza a Porciano”

Reviewed 14 Mar 2015

Porciano is absolute magic. I've stayed in both Casa Teresa (solo) and Casa Scaletta (with a friend) and both are comfortable and well equipped. The management is very helpful and knowledgeable. The air is clear, the views gorgeous, a perfect retreat for relaxation and creativity. The Casentino Valley is an unspoiled gem with many places to explore so one will never be bored.
