Location description from owner

The England region

Ideal accommodation for keen walkers, cyclists or those simply wanting a tranquil rural retreat with the possibility to explore the South Downs National Park or visit the many other attractions on our doorstep. Steyning is the perfect base for exploring the South Downs with convenient road & rail links from London, Brighton and the Sussex coast.

Steyning

Steyning has a long history, and has existed since Anglo-Saxon times. Just wandering along the streets and lanes you will see stunning examples of architecture from the Medieval to the Georgian period. The local Grammar School is over 400 years old, and although it has since expanded, the original buildings are still in use. The fascinating Steyning Museum is free and open all year round - it's well worth a visit.

There are four pubs (with three serving food) and several more restaurants and cafes, and the High Street is predominantly made up of interesting, independent retailers. There is a small Co-op supermarket, but most of your day to day needs can be met by our local fruit and veg shop, butchers and fishmonger.

Don't miss Cobblestone Walk - a surprising community of small businesses hiding in a courtyard surrounding the Cobblestone Tea House.

Steyning has a unique feel, and sense of community, more like a village than the town it technically is.

“Peaceful and comfortable stay in Steyning, Sussex and very dog friendly”

Reviewed 10 Apr 2017

We stayed at Amberley Cottage for a mid week break in early April. We were warmly received by our hosts and shown to the cottage which sits within the grounds of their lovely old farm house. The cottage is very comfortable, well decorated and equipped, and an ideal getaway for a few days. It had everything that we required including good internet. Our dog was welcome and free to run around the gardens and was soon best friends with the owners own dog. You can walk out of the drive and after a few meters on the quiet lane be on footpaths giving loads of different walking options. The village centre is about fifteen minutes walk (by road) and there are no shortage of options for dining out. It is a pretty place with a good variety of local shops. We have only one minor criticism which is that you do get a little sound coming through the wall from the adjacent cottage, but it did not disturb us and we would not hesitate in recommending Amberley Cottage for a short or even longer break.
