Location description from owner

The England region

Home of Northumberland and Durham, the spectacular parts of the north-east include the North Pennines, the Northumberland coastline and the historic and vibrant cities of Newcastle and Durham.

Stanhope

Our cottage is located in Weardale, which is situated in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Upper Weardale valley in County Durham is a rugged area of countryside that is relatively unknown. With many similarities to the Yorkshire Dales, the Durham Dales including Weardale and Teesdale have a remote feel, and yet are only 30 miles from Newcastle, Durham, Hadrian's Wall, North Yorkshire and the Lake District.Weardale is an excellent base for exploring the whole of Northumbria and the north-east of England. In the dale, there is great walking and many villages to explore. The award-winning museums of Killhope lead mining centre and Beamish outdoor museum are both accessible for fantastic days out.

“Wonderful cottage and area to visit”

Reviewed 19 Jul 2015

We had a 3 night stay in the Traditional Weardale Cottage and wish it had been for longer. I would highly recommend the cottage for a stay in Weardale as it is so homely, comfortable and well equipped for any length of stay. The area around the village has wonderful walks and many wonderful places to visit in the nearby vicinity. We will definitely be staying here again.

“Excellent!”

Excellent cottage. Had a short break with my sister and dad so the accommodation was ideal having a twin room and a double room. The location was just where we wanted to be in the Dales and the Co-Op was just in front of the cottage. The cottage was well equipped though we didn't need to light the log burner as it wasn't cold enough. We hope to go back the same time next year for our annual visit to The Dales.

“Outstanding value for money accomodation in an area unjustly ignored by tourists”

Reviewed 8 May 2013

The cottage is idiosyncratic (was 2 separate cottages originally), but extremely interesting, with large numbers of original features, like the built in cupboards by the fire and Rayburn. The multi fuel stove and solid fuel Rayburn range ensure that the cottage is kept warm, although obviously an understanding of how to effectively run these things is necessary. There is a really nice compact front garden, although using the garden furniture in April was not, unfortunately, an option. The kitchen is small, but very user-friendly, being equipped with both an electric cooker and a microwave, as well as all the other small appliances one would expect. Each bedroom is reached via a steep flights of stairs and are easily capable of sleeping the 4 to 5 people stated. Weardale itself is termed an area of outstanding natural beauty and I would fully support that claim, there are lovely walks to be had from the cottage itself and further afield, as well as attractions such as Killhope lead mining museum within easy driving distance.
