The Upper Austria region

The Salzkammergut is the Lake District of Austria, comprising 76 lakes surrounded by rolling hills, spectacular mountains and pretty, unspoilt villages.

St Wolfgang and Lake Wolfgangsee are at the region’s centre (and are also the prettiest – but we are biased).

This is an area for all seasons, from skiing in Winter to parasailing or water skiing on the lakes in the Summer. And throughout the year: walking, cycling, or just touring and admiring the beautiful scenery.

There are festivals, shows and celebrations all year in the towns around the lakes - the Christmas markets are not to be missed!

This region has something for everyone – stunning scenery, fun places to visit including the trick water fountains at Hellbrunn, Summer and Winter sports, sites of historical interest such as Hallstatt and of course the Sound of Music!

St. Wolfgang

St Wolfgang

The historic and picturesque village of St Wolfgang is located on the North shore of the Wolfgangsee lake in the Salzkammergut Lake District area of Austria.

The village is full of quaint and beautiful painted buildings, many kept in the same family for centuries. There are many artisan shops selling hand-made candles, soaps, glass items, Lebkuchen (honey/ginger cookies), plus traditional lederhosen, dirndls, etc.

St Wolfgang is a village for all seasons, from skiing in Postalm in Winter (25 mins by bus or car) to parasailing or water skiing on the lake in the Summer. For the less energetic, there are electric boats for hire, so that you can take a leisurely cruise on the lake, or the old paddle boat ferry which runs between the main villages on the lake: St Gilgen, Strobl and St Wolfgang.

There are numerous festivals during the year, enthusiastically supported by the local people (of all ages) who don’t miss a chance to dress up in their national costume and eat and drink at the little wooden stalls that spring up in the street and watch and listen to traditional dancers and bands. During Advent, St Wolfgang boasts probably the prettiest Christmas market in Austria. Christmas trees line the main street, stars and lights hang overhead and snow-covered wooden cabins line the streets and market place, selling all sorts of traditional festive ornaments, decorations and of course food and drink. Every now and then a band or choir of adults or children play and sing Christmas songs. And naturally there is a life-size nativity, with real animals. It is all quite magical.

Nearby Attractions

Schafberg railway

The other side of St Wolfgang, about a ten minute walk away, is the Schafberg Railway; the steepest steam cog-wheel railway in Austria. Famous for having ferried Julie Andrews and the children up the mountain in The Sound of Music, this train has been climbing to the top of the Schafberg mountain (1,783m) since 1893. The 45 minute ride is worth it for the breathtaking 360° view at the top over seven of the Salzkammergut lakes.

Strobl (10 mins by car)

Summer rodelbahn (toboggan run)

Race down the side of the hill along twin steel toboggan runs in either one or two man wheeled sleds.

St Gilgen (20 mins by car)

Another pretty lakeside village, the birthplace of Mozart's mother.

Bad Ischl (20 mins by car)

A pretty spa town, originally the capital of the Salzkammergut region. Home to the Kaiservilla, the summer residence of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Many famous composers would also spend the Summer in Bad Ischl and there are still music festivals and concerts throughout July and August.

There is an open-air pool (‘Parkbad’) in Bad Ischl offering various attractions including 3m and 1m diving boards, mother and child area, underwater massage bench, white-water channel, a grotto with waterfall and a giant water slide

Take the scenic route (left as you leave St Wolfgang) – a very pretty drive any time of the year, with classic Austrian farmhouses and rolling countryside.

Postalm Arena – Skiing (30 mins drive)

Family skiing with seven lifts, two restaurants, ski and ski hire shop. You can also rent a locker here and leave all your equipment so you don’t have to lug it back down on the bus.

Excellent ski school for all ages, including a fenced off kinder school with its own mini lifts.

Mondsee (30 mins by car)

Famous cathedral where the Sound of Music wedding takes place.

During Advent there is a Christmas market in the church cloisters and in the square in front of the church stalls selling festive food and drink, including gluhwein and fresh fruit dipped in chocolate. Facing the church across the square is a large stage with bands performing Christmas songs.

Hallstatt (40 mins by car)

Home of the world’s earliest known salt mine.

Gmunden (45 mins by car)

An attractive town on the Traunsee lake where the famous Gmunden pottery and tiles are made. Also home to the Seeschloss Ort castle on the lake.

Salzburg (45 mins by car)

Mozart House and Museum

Baroque Altstadt (Old Town)

Perfectly preserved old town (a UNESCO world heritage site).

Hohensalzburg Castle

One of the largest medieval castles in Europe – high above Salzburg, reached by a precipitous cable car ride from the old town.

Mirabell Gardens

Beautiful baroque formal gardens with large, symmetrical flower beds and statues from Greek mythology.

It is here in the Sound of Music film that Maria and the von Trapp children sing “Do-Re-Mi” and run through the hedge tunnel.

Hellbrun Palace – trick fountains (south of Salzburg – 1 hr by car)

Great fun in Summertime, but you will get wet!

Also now home to the pavilion from the Sound of Music film.

“Beautiful apartment, great location, friendly and helpful hosts”

Reviewed 20 Jul 2016

This is a beautifully furnished apartment in the centre of St Wolfgang - ideally located. A short walk to the ferry, church, cafes, and a slightly longer one to the mountain railway. You don't need a car, but if you hire one the parking space allocated to the apartment is an added boon in what is essentially a pedestrianised village. Very well equipped, including the world's fastest tumble dryer, a plus for a family. Email correspondence with the owner was exemplary, and the on-site keyholder even waited up til 2am to meet us after a delayed flight into Munich. The weather was gorgeous for us, so the coolness of the apartment was a bonus - and thoughtful touches like bread, eggs, milk and jam being left for our breakfast, and very classy toiletries, swimming towels, extra pillows etc put this ahead of your average holiday apartment. St Wolfgang itself is picture perfect - the quintessentially Alpine village, with beautiful flowered window boxes, a wealth of places to eat, and scenery that look like a picture postcard. Definitely take the cog railway up the Schafberg for breathtaking views, hike around to St Gilgen via the Felsenkirche, take a ferry across the lake to the summer toboggan run, or just eat the most gorgeous meal imaginable at the Franz Josef and drink in the view. Possibly the most idyllic holiday ever!

“Smart apartment in central location.”

Reviewed 17 Aug 2015

This apartment was ideal for me and my wife. It had a central location being only a few steps away from shops, bars, restaurants and private undercover car parking space and only a few 100 yards away from the lakeside. We had a very warm welcome from Michelle who had provided us with a few essential groceries. The apartment was spotlessly clean with lots of really thoughtful touches. My wife was particularly pleased with the fact that there were lots of good quality hangers. We found the beds to be really comfortable too. For us St Wolfgang was a beautiful place and a perfect base for exploring this particular area of Austria.
