Description

Gite du Vert Rivage (Previously Riverside Cottage) is a perfect retreat for anglers and anyone who loves a riverside setting. A favourite over recent years with people who love the picturesque location and excellent fishing that the river at the back of the house provides. Many personal best catches have been made right here, including 18 lb carp and 8 lb bream. It's also a perfect base to explore the surrounding areas and to relax in when you return, a superb location for a family holiday. There are also some excellent golf courses in a 30 mile radius.

While conveniently situated just off the quiet main road for easy access to countryside and coast, there is direct access to the river at the rear with mile after mile of cycle path, fishing, swimming and boating. The stunning beaches of the Breton coasts to west and south are within easy reach, and as the ferry port of Roscoff is only an hour away you don't need to spend a fortune getting there.

Location description from owner

The Brittany region

Stang Korvenn is in the midst of the beautiful countryside and unspoilt coasts of Finistre, with activities to suit every taste (unless you're looking for noise and crowds!) Often described as similar to Devon or Cornwall (though much less crowded), you may just fall in love as we have with the rugged landscape and golden beaches of this inspiring part of the world. The climate is also similar to the South West of England, but usually has a warmer summer. Winters are generally mild too.

With such variety there really is something for everyone - whether you like to visit a chic resort like Benodet on the South Coast, or any of the hundreds of secluded beaches on the Crozon peninsula. Even in the height of summer you can often find yourselves alone on a beach here. And no car parking charges!

Lovers of good food and wine will be spoiled for choice - the seafood is unrivalled, and as fresh as you can get. Local specialities include the famous buckwheat crepes (either savoury or sweet), and the Breton cider is delicious.

St Thois

The village of Saint Thois is less than 1 km away, and has a church, a quiet bar, a caf, a post office and a grocery store selling bread, croissants, cheese and wine etc. The pretty market town of Chateauneuf du Faou is a 5 minute drive away, or you can cycle there along the tow path on the other side of the canal. There you will find restaurants, creperies, bars and cafes plus larger shops, a supermarket and banks etc. Nearby there are many other friendly towns and villages to explore, each with its own unique character. During summer months there are many music festivals, from traditional folk and jazz to the 3 day music festival at Carhaix in July. This is France's Glastonbury (Bruce Springsteen. Lou Reed, Chemical Bros and the Killers have played here) though at approx 100€ for the weekend about half of the cost! Only 30 minutes away.

The medieval city of Quimper is a little over 20 minutes away with its spectacular cathedral, fascinating winding streets, half timbered buildings and chic shops, bars and restaurants. A little further inland lies the quaint lakeside town of Huelgoat with mystery walks into the forest with enormous boulders like gigantic Henry Moore sculptures.

Wild life is abundant, with kingfisher, heron and many other beautiful birds to watch, as well as the occasional otter and even coypu in the river right outside the house. Children and families are well catered for, as well as the child free.

Fishing
Both coarse and sea fishing are extremely good here. Day (10€ approx) or week (30€ approx from 1st June to December) tourist licenses can be obtained for your stay, and many personal best catches have been made in the river right outside our garden! We have a (written) fishing guide available on request to provide all the information you need, and some spare fishing equipment (chairs, nets) we can loan you.

“Fantastic base to explore Brittany”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2014

We loved staying here, the house is very well equipped and the kids loved the games room. Great position next to the canal and we enjoyed spotting bats at dusk.

“What a treat to stay in such a beautiful and friendly place.”

Reviewed 17 Aug 2014

Wow, stayed with my husband and our 15 year old son, choose it for the fishing and the activity barn and the fact that you could cycle to local restaurants and it certainly did not disappoint. The gite was lovely, clean and had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. Bryan and Jilly our hosts, were fabulous and so welcoming , giving great advice on what to see and do in the area. We arrived to a fantastically cooked evening meal by Bryan, and an equally fabulous welcome basket, was a real treat. Lots to see and do in the area, beautiful beaches to swim from, or a great place to just sit back and totally relax. We enjoyed cycling from the gite to the nearby town for dinner, and a boat ride. We enjoyed spotting the Coypo, and bat watching, played table tennis in the barn and fished in the canal and chilling out in the beautiful grounds of the gite. We shall certainly be staying again.

“Clean, well equipped gite with a lovely garden”

Reviewed 6 Jul 2014

We had a very pleasant stay at this gite which was clean and well equipped. The garden was very pleasant with both sunny and shaded areas and outside seating. The gite was next to a canal with paths on each bank which provided excellent walking and cycling. Most of the places we had opted to visit were within an hours drive and we therefore had plenty of time to explore. The hosts were very helpful and friendly without being intrusive.

“Perfect rural getaway”

Reviewed 29 Aug 2013

This is a fantastic little gite. I say 'little' but it can sleep 5, so is perfect for a small family. It is well maintained by the owners, who provide complimentary wine and basics on arrival. The gite is ideally placed to explore the west and south coasts of Brittany (35-40 minutes) as well as the interior. Local amenities are just 10 minutes away. For those nervy about speaking French, the locals are all very friendly. The gite enjoys spacious gardens that attract wildlife (nothing dangerous - just lots of butterflies) as well an adjoining canal for fishing enthusiasts and nice for evening strolls. Can't fault this place.

“Great little Gite”

Reviewed 28 Aug 2013

We had a lovely relaxing 2 weeks at Riverside Cottage with our 10 year old and border collie. The property is looked after well and there are some lovely little touches. There are 3 massive gardens (shared with guests staying at the cottage next door, as well as a small private area with BBQ, garden table and chairs just for us. We were lucky with the weather and spent a lot of time in the gardens relaxing in the hammock, sunbathing on the loungers, swinging on the swings throwing sticks for the dog and popping through the gate for walks along the river and to explore the massive area of parkland nearby, which we nearly always had just to ourselves We had a few trips out, but not as many as we had planned as we enjoyed just chilling around the Gite. Although this was made more necessary than usual as I managed to sprain my ankle the first week I was there - all my own fault - but it didn't really spoil things, in fact it made me relax a little more than I usually do! Thanks to Bryan and Jill for letting us stay in their beautiful piece of Brittany Sue, Rob, Ellie and Loot

“Peaceful & stressless.”

Reviewed 6 Jun 2012

This was the best holiday I've had outside the UK. The setting is perfect; next to the canal on a quiet road with quick & easy access to the nearby town. It was easy to book & the owners were friendly & helpful. The cottage itself had loads of provincial French charm, but had been sympathetically restored with all modern facilities. Best thing was the lack of traffic, worst thing having to come home!

“Comfortable and cosy”

Reviewed 27 May 2012

The cottage is pretty, roomy, and very comfortable in any weather. The May weather was rainy and cold, but the electric heaters worked very well to keep it comfortable (even without the wood burner). Access to the river was by a gate from the property, and is very peaceful. Getting to the property was easy enough using the information from the owners. The welcome food pack that Bryan left for us was great, and saved a trip to the market after driving from Mayenne. English freeview TV and wifi worked great. The separate play room was a nice addition and had ping pong, darts, and and other games.

“A very relaxing place”

Reviewed 27 Oct 2011

Riverside Cottage is well-equipped & spacious, with all the facilities you need for a self catering holiday. Having the river at the bottom of the garden is a great bonus - if, like me, you have a non-fishing partner, you can fish away and still be sociable! The grounds are quite large and well planted, lots of interesting nooks & crannies. The games room was a treat, we didn't take advantage of the bikes in there, but had great fun playing table tennis. The surrounding area is lovely, CDF is a nice little town with excellent facilities. We never used any restaurants, but the supermarkets are first class, so BBQ was the order of the day. There are some beautiful beaches within striking distance - Benodet, Morgat to name just two. Also the rocks at Huelgoat make a fascinating day out. We needed some help with a minor problem during our stay, Bryan has some very friendly & helpful people in the area who sorted things out with no fuss whatsoever. All in all a very relaxing time, it never seemed that we were renting from strangers, more like using a friend's holiday home.

“Brilliant”

Reviewed 6 Sep 2011

A lovely cottage that provided everything we needed in lovely rural Brittany. Very clean and comfortable. Good fishing opportunities in the river behind the cottage and other locations. Good base to explore the area. We will definately book again.
