Location description from owner

The Dordogne region

The Dordogne region of South West France is one of the most beautiful and popular regions of France.

Chateaux, beautiful medieval towns and villages, unspoilt countryside and prehistoric caves are just some of the reasons why the region has been attracting visitors for many years.

There are many 'famous sights' in the Dordogne, including: Lascaux caves; Marqueyssac gardens; medieval Sarlat; Chateau Castelnaud; prehistoric caves in the Vezere Valley, etc. Yet it is the places that you visit outside these 'hot-spots' that will stay longest in your memory - the scenery, the peace, the coffee in a small cafe, the picnic next to a stream....

St Sulpice de Roumagnac

Situated in Green Périgord, in the forest of Double, St Sulpice de Roumagnac is a charming and lively village. 7 km from Riberac. An ideal base to discover this beautiful part of Dordogne and also for sports enthusiasts with canoeing, hiking, cycling, tennis, horse riding, golf available within easy reach.
This part of Périgord is characterised by its green hills, its wheat and sunflower fields, its vineyards and rivers. The hills are the foothills of the Massif Central – some 50 km away, the valleys are deeper and the rivers wilder, ideal for canoeing, kayaking and climbing. There are numerous “bastides” in the area (300 preserved walled towns and villages), castles and churches, but also the famous Lascaux and Les Eyzies grottoes. The Périgord gastronomy is famous for its foie gras and duck, truffles and fine wines.

PLACES TO VISIT:
Ribérac. 7 km. Pleasant quiet town with many historic building, famous for its Friday market reputedly the biggest market in Perigord.
Aubeterre sur Dronne. 25 km. Classified as one of the prettiest villages in France, this village, full of rustic charm with steep cobbled streets overlooks the Dronne, is built in the shape of an amphitheatre on a white cliff. Its monolithic church is one of the most beautiful and unusual churches in the world. Dating from the 12th century, it is carved into a chalk cliff and is the largest underground church in France.
Périgueux. 35 km. Capital city of the Dordogne department, set on the banks of the River Isle. The city boasts a beautiful medieval centre as well as a smaller but nonetheless fascinating roman quarter.
Brantome. 40 km. Idyllic village on the banks of the River Dronne, known locally as the Venice of Perigord. Boasting a beautiful Benedictine abbey and a fabulous troglodyte cave with scenes of the Last Judgement carved in the stone make it well worth a detour.

THINGS TO DO:
Golf Public de Périgueux, Marsac sur l'Isle. 25 km. Golf course. 18 holes – 6028m par 72. On the banks of River Isle, a fairly flat, technical course with many water hazards.
La Brande, Fouleix. 45 km. Great for kids, with an amazing collection of houses built of willow and various other materials hidden throughout a woodland walk.
L'Appel de la Forêt, Thénon. 70 km. Tree top adventure park. 9 progressive trails with over 100 activities. Swing, crawl and climb through the trees or slide down one of the 25 zip lines. An unforgettable moment to share with family or friends.
Grottes de Lascaux. 85 km. World famous caves boasting paintings estimated to be from around 19,000 years ago. Open to the public after WWII but closed in 1963 because the paintings were being damaged by the carbon dioxide produced by thousands of visitors. The current site is a replica situated 200m from the original site.

FURTHER AFIELD:
St Jean de Cole. 60 km. Very attractive village with a stone bridge over the river, and a well preserved old centre with castle, covered market and church.
Bergerac. 45 km. One of the largest and most important towns in the region on the banks of the river Dordogne and with delightful old centre boasting many attractive, medieval, half-timbered buildings.
Thiviers. 65 km. 'Capital of the foie gras in Green Perigord', the old part of the town holds the most interest for visitors including devilish carvings on the church columns! The town also has an important history of producing pottery.
Les Eyzies. 85 km. Home to the world's most beautiful caves, some with outstanding crystallisations as well as stunning cliffs and rock formations. Cromagnon man was discovered here at the end of the 19th century. Nearby Fond de Gaume is one of the last prehistoric cave-painting sites that is still open to the public. The National Prehistory Museum which houses one of the world's most complete collections of prehistoric artifacts is also found in Les Eyzies.
