Location description from owner
The Grand Massif region
The Haute Savoie region of the French Alps is home to some of the most beautiful mountains in Europe, having Mont Blanc close by. Some of the lesser known mountain ranges are just as lovely and more accessible in some cases. The climate is excellent having four distinct seasons. Winter is well known for the quality and amount of snow: spring is warm and balmy with an abundance of wild flowers appearing after the monochrome winter: summer can be hot and dry with sudden thunderstorms that finish abruptly to leave further sunny conditions and autumn can be beautful as the trees change from green to gold to yellow.Within a short driving distance are many places of interest. Chamonix, having the foot of Mont Blanc in its main street, is less than an hour away and is a bustling, buzzy town. Sallanches is thirty minutes away and regularly wins the "Ville Fleurie" - flowery villages - competitions, beautiful to see in the summer months: Megeve, having been "discovered" by the Rothschild family at the turn of the last century during their Grand Tour, is worth a visit and no trip to the region is complete without a day in Annecy, the beautiful town set on the lake with its prison in the canal, great restaurants, quirky shops, castle, old town as well as the modern part.2013 saw the Tour de France 100 years old and some significant events have taken part in this region. The cols of Alpe d'Huez, Bourg d'Oisans, Le Grand Bornand and Annecy-Semnoz are all within driving distance from St Sigismond. We are recommending booking early as enquiries are already coming in for the summer months. Bring your own bike or hire from the many excellent shops locally.
Autumn is lovely in the region with many villages holding apple and cider fairs. The best, in our opinion, is Mieussy, just ten minutes away by car.
The area consists of many small villages that are historic in their own right and St Sigismond is part of the Faucigny Villages. Taninges, just ten minutes away, has a long history of religion: Mieussy is where the first paragliding flight was taken: the Arve valley is well known for watch making and micro engineering. The whole area is well known for the quality of its cheeses and Abondance and Tomme are produced locally.Mountain walking attracts a large number of people and we can recommend excellent walks of varying difficulty to suit, from the difficult and sometimes technical walks in the Cirque Sixt Fer a Cheval and ridge walks in the Chaine des Aravis to gentle, meadow walks in Joux Plane, St Sigismond and surrounding area.September and October in the Alps is usually a very mellow time, with walking made easier in the cooler airs. Some special deals in place for September and Octoer now in place. Mont Blanc attracts many people and is a delight to see, covered in snow even throughout the summer months. There is so much happening in the area all year round, such as bread festivals, flower festivals, concerts in the wonderful old churches, whole village car boot events, cider festivals and many more.
