Description from owner

Description

A 3 bed cottage in a small hamlet of 5 houses right on the banks of the river Dordogne. There is no though traffic apart from the occasional bike or tractor! It has a kitchen/diner with wood burning stove, two living rooms and a newly remodelled shower room/WC (2016) on the ground floor. Upstairs there is a bathroom, two double bedrooms (one with washbasin) which overlook the river and a large bedroom (twin beds) overlooking the garden at the back. Whilst not a deluxe, hi-tech renovation the cottage is fully furnished and equipped. WiFi is available in the cottage. . Woodburning stove in kitchen / electric radiators elsewhere. Room fans provided in summer. Use of the (heated) pool is exclusive to holidaymakers from 09.00 to 18.00 daily - evenings by arrangement.

Further details

The staircase is quite steep and narrow. The garden is only partly fenced and thus, being on the edge of the river, may not be suitable for young children (or unruly dogs!).

Location description from owner

The Dordogne region

The Dordogne has hot but not oppressive summers, spring and autumn tend to be balmy and pleasant. Winters are obviously colder but with blue skies and sunshine - it is often possible to eat lunch outside in February and March!

The region has a colourful and interesting history - prehistoric cave paintings, Roman villas and mosaics, mediaeval towns and castles. The 100 years war was fought throughout the area with "bastide" towns changing hands between the English and French on a regular basis.

Bordeaux (one hour away) is an elegant town - lovely shops, good restaurants and many interesting buildings and museums. It is serviced by a very good tram service with the "park and ride" system making getting in quick and stressless.

St Seurin de Prats

Castillon La Bataille (15 mins) is where the decisive battle took place to end the hundred year war. The town stages a "son & lumiere" re-enactment of the battle on several evenings during late July & early August each year. A cast of hundreds including dozens of horses, a couple of oxen and a pig!

St Emillion, world famous for it's wines, is only 30 minutes away. It is a UNESCO Heritage site, classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. It has narrow cobbled streets, a wide selection of restaurants, and of course lots of wine tasting opportunities.

Ste. Foy la Grande is a typical French market town - the market on Saturday mornings is reputed to be one of the best in the area. It is possible to take boat trips up the river from here.

Throughout the summer most villages have "brocante" fairs, night markets, firework displays and communal evenings with food, wine, music and dancing.

House rules

The house is not really suitable for toddlers as the staircase is steep and narrow.
Well behaved dogs are welcome but owners should clean up after them. They are not allowed in the swimming pool area, but can be left in the large, fenced garden behind the cottage.
