The South East England / Kent region

Kent is described as the Garden of England, with its beautiful rolling countryside, and fertile fruit orchards. It often misses the extremes of weather seen in the rest of the country. It is full of historic interest, being about 25 minutes from Hastings, the town of the famous battle of 1066, 45 minutes from Canterbury, the ancient centre of so many significant ecclesiastical happenings . Some of the surrounding villages can be traced back many centuries and display their 'chocolate box' appearance with thatched cottages, windmills, ponds, winding country lanes and ancient architecture. The fascinating town of Rye with its cobbled streets is only 20 minutes away.

There are numerous National Trust properties in the area, (including Sissinghurst Castle), and other fascinating castles and gardens (such as Bodium, Scotney and Leeds Castles, Pashley Manor Gardens etc. There are wineries, vineyards, sports centres, steam railways, golf courses, and museums as well as unusual eating places and friendly pubs serving excellent food.

Tenterden / St. Michaels area

Tenterden also boasts a famous steam train that will transport you to Northiam (where you can laze your time away in a boat on the river) or to Bodium, with its famous castle.

There is a sports centre about a mile away, in Tenterden, with a swimming pool, exercise stadium, tennis, table tennis and squash etc..

St Michaels has all the essential shops and facilities within walking distance of The Oasis, including a General Stores, a Post Office, a hairdresser, a pub, a Fish and Chip shop, and Chinese and Bangladeshi restaurants. There is also an excellent hardware store and butcher/greengrocer, as well as a handy petrol station.

A car is not essential as St Michaels is on a bus route which goes into Tenterden, Headcorn, Ashford, Canterbury and Maidstone. However, full advantage of the huge variety of places of interest could not be taken without independent transport.
