The Basse-Normandie region
The Normandy peninsular is rich in historic tradition, with its ancient churches, vibrant markets and characterful architecture, from charming villages to magnificent chateaux and cathedrals. Never far away are the wide sweeping beaches, and the famous landing beaches haunted by memories of the heroism of World War II. There are museums and galleries of many kinds to visit, covering a wide range of activity and interest, from farming to war to painting and regional traditions. The rolling countryside is unspoilt and varied, with numerous species of wildlife, from hawks to glow worms. There are dozens of local daily traditional markets and restaurants boasting local fare, and regular car boot sales for that surprise antique bargain – more than one could explore in a lifetime!
The immediate area around the cottage is of unspoilt tranquil farm land, the hamlet where the cottage is situated consisting of fewer than a dozen traditional houses. But only five minutes away by car are the wide sandy beaches of the east coast, and closer still in Ravenoville Bourg is the excellent L'Eucalyptus restaurant. A little further away in Sainte Mere Eglise (7 minutes by car) the choice is wider, including the Auberge John Steele, named after the US paratrooper of WW2. Enjoy the farm museum, the 'Airborne' museum, the traditional Thursday market in Sainte-Mère-Eglise, or the regular 'vides grenier' bric-a-brac markets in the villages. You will be spoilt for things to do and places to see!
