Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

Upstream from Cahors, the road follows the River Lot through dramatic and awe-inspiring countryside towards St Cirq Lapopie, Cabrerets and the prehistoric caves of Pech Merle. All are well worth a visit. To the South are the spectacular deep gorges of the Aveyron and Tarn Rivers leading to the mediaeval towns of Cordes en ciel, (The village in the sky) and Albi with its painted cathedral and Toulouse Lautrec Museum. West of Cahors and spread over miles of countryside are the vineyards which produce the robust and distinctive Cahors Wine. The Dordogne, Rocamadour and the Gouffre de Padirac are some 45 kms to the North.

The whole region enjoys an abundance of good wine and food. Particular specialties include duck, truffles and an array of different cheeses. Locally grown fruit and vegetables are plentiful and delicious. The smaller restaurants in the surrounding villages are well worth visiting and many produce amazing menus of great value, variety and quality.

St Medard

The fascinating old market town of Cahors, almost surrounded by the River Lot, offers the visitor a vista of old buildings and streets to explore. Many of these date back to Roman times and include the famous Pont Valentré. The market and local vineyards are well worth a visit.

The local leisure centre and lake offers tennis, canoeing, boating and mini golf. The River Lot provides the more adventurous watersports enthusiast with a range of activities. There are a number of golf courses within reasonable driving distance

In St-Medard you can enjoy many walks through the idyllic countryside. One such walk through the top of the village leads to a vineyard. Most producers take great pleasure in sharing their know-how and love of their wines: each producer has a range of wines and vintages for you to try on the spot, glass in hand. Wine in this region is so inexpensive. You will also pass by the ex Maire of St-Medard whose farm provides a wide selection of homemade cheeses. At the end of a tiring day, treat yourself to a meal in the exclusive restaurant - Le Grindreau just around the corner.

Close to St-Medard are many other villages to be enjoyed, the nearest Catus (5km), has a lake where you can also enjoy many forms of water sports and fishing. The tourist office will provide you with many historic walks of their village. The village has a restaurant Le-Grindreau a Michelin star which although quite expensive is well worth a visit. Catus has all the shops necessary for daily living. Here you will find an excellent bakery, butchers, greengrocers, newsagent and small supermarket. Each Tuesday there is a local market which provides a colourful insight to the wealth of local produce and culture. There are also three large supermarkets in the surrounding areas.

“One of my two favourite places to holiday”

Reviewed 10 Mar 2012

My wife and I have holidayed in the villa 'Eire' in St. Medard approximately 6-7 times in the past 12 years or so - which, in itself, says a lot about how much we like it. We have mostly stayed in the upper of the two apartments because it is a little more private and has a balcony (with adjustable awning) around two sides of the building which provides beautiful views of the surrounding heavily wooded countryside. I have spent countless enjoyable hours on that balcony having long leisurely meals with a glass of chilled local white at my elbow, reading (ditto chilled local white) or reclining at night under the incredibly starry sky watching for shooting stars (ditto chilled local white). St. Medard is a tiny village with neither a shop nor a bar so if you are looking for a vacation full of the high life it is probably not the place for you. If, on the other hand, you ache for an interlude of peace and quiet away from the madding crowd you could hardly do better. Although 'Eire' is close to other houses in the village the neighbours are anything but intrusive. When it is very warm the swimming pool provides cooling and gentle exercise. If you want to push your body a little more the local tourist organisation has information on a range of interesting local walks varying from the gentle to the (occasionally very) challenging. If you need to reconnect with the outside world the nearby village of Catus and town of Prayssac both have shops, restaurants, bars and very lively weekly markets. St. Medard is also well-placed for trips to a wide variety of beautiful and interesting tourist sites. There are also many first-class restaurants within easy driving distance and the Michelin-starred (but pretty expensive) 'Le Gindreau' is only five minutes walk from the front door of 'Eire' itself - a major advantage if you plan to carry out extensive comparative research on the local wines. The facilities in the apartment are not, perhaps, what one would describe as luxury but will be more than adequate for all but the very fussy. We have really loved our time in St. Medard over the years. We are looking forward to being there again next summer, and have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone seeking a beautiful tranquil retreat from the pressures of the everyday world.
