“Well Located”

Reviewed 4 Oct 2016

Saint Martin is the chic town abundant with restaurants and boutiques of Ile de Re, where space is at a premium, and accommodation expensive. We were advised to avoid July and August when the island creaks under the strain of too many holiday makers. September is perfect, and the Center Parc owned complex of Pierre Vacances makes for a convenient location: we arrived by bus to "Le Port" - the stop next to the tourist office in St Martin and after a 10 minute walk soon found our destination. Communication about the apartment had been a little difficult. Pascal (friendly and helpful), the owner had emailed us instructions in French (he doesn't speak English) and we had exchanged emails on the basis of google translator. Eventually he had his partly English speaking friend phone us to clarify a few things. We had been instructed to contact his property manager prior to arriving to arrange a meeting time. They too were none English speaking and when we arrived and met them, language was difficult. Like most people on this heavenly island, Madame Lasalle was very friendly and accommodating. It turns out that we were supposed to bring our own towels and bed linen (not very practical when arriving with hand luggage only on Ryanair) and Madame Lasalle drove off home and returned with a small selection. The apartment was not what we expected - it is shockingly small. This explains the relative low price for St Martin. There is a main room with a kitchenette, a large round dining table, a sofa and a double bed that folds out of the wall over the sofa, when the table is pushed to one side. There is a bunk bed in the hall way leading to the toilet and bathroom. The upper bunk has a wooden safe sticking into it making it somewhat redundant. The apartment fixtures look a little DIY and certainly you have to be careful not to break blinds, patio doors, etc which are all a little delicate. For the three of us, it was manageable and we did have a lovely time, not spending too long in the apartment. The kitchenette is equipped with all essentials, including a coffee maker, toaster, small oven and everything you need. The bathroom had a decent sized shower with great power. There is also a very small balcony (about 4m X 1 m) which overlooks a parking area and some houses. In the evening it catches all of the sun and makes for a good spot to sip some wine. The complex itself shows some signs of wear and tear but perfectly met our needs. The swimming pool is seconds away from the apartment and in September is barely used. We enjoyed great weather during our stay and spent an hour or two each day in the pool or on the loungers by the pool, mostly by ourselves. The reception staff spoke English and was always friendly and helpful. When we arrived I tried to log onto the internet I understood would be available. You arrive at a portal in French offering you basic or high speed internet at a price. I persuaded reception to give me a code (somewhat reluctantly) for the basic. Mistake! The basic turned out to very up and down – sometimes 2mbps and at times (often) not doing anything. Once logged into basic, it no longer seemed possible to switch to switch to premium. You can hire bikes from reception (leisurely cycling around this island is one of its greatest joys), but we were put off when we were told that we had to produce a damage/loss deposit of 200 euro per bike which could not be covered by insurance. Instead we went to Yootoo in town where some English was spoken, and you leave a driving license or passport as security. We took out the insurance which later we discovered only covered half of the cost of damage or loss (you are still liable for 200 euro). From the apartment you can walk to the main supermarkets (out of town) in 20 minutes – or cycle there in 5 minutes). Local wine shops and restaurants are all located within 5 to 10 minutes’ walk. We loved our stay on the island and can’t wait to return next year. 10 days was a little too long in such a small space, and we would probably prefer to increase our budget and find somewhere a little more spacious. Pierre Vacances had other apartments available which were at least double in size, but also double in price. So actually, this apartment is very good value for money when it comes to Saint Martin and should certainly be considered. .

“Perfect base for exploring the Ile de Re”

Great location near central St Martin - short walk from top of cobbled street lined with shops, down to harbour with its cafes, restaurants and marketplace. First floor apartment - modern, quiet, light ,compact and clean. Air conditioning.Balcony overlooks quiet street behind complex - gets the late afternoon and evening sun which is lovely. Accommodates 2 adults in comfortable large pull down bed and 2 children in bunk beds. (top bunk only suitable for 5 years and above - quite high ) Very near pool (open 9-7, cleaned daily) which our children loved and which was never too busy - 1.2 metres at shallow end. Indoor covered section connected to outdoor open section. Free parking at complex but can be difficult to get a space when busy - no reserved spaces . Can park directly outside complex on road free for one hour during day and overnight (8.00pm to 8.00am). There is large free (24hr) car park 10mins walk away outside town walls, but there is height limit of 2.0 metres in this car park (and many other car parks in St. Martin). Laundry facilities available in complex. Overall we would highly recommend this apartment .
