This 300 - 400 year old house is in the village square of Sainte Marie du Mont, 4 star classification by Minstry Tourisme, the very first village liberated on D Day 6th June 1944 - this photo showing what became known as The Band of Brothers, (Easy Company), 101st Airborne The Screaming Eagles, passing in front of the house.
Located right opposite the world famous Sainte Marie du Mont Church, the view out the bedroom has been described as one of the best in France... you can lie in bed looking at the the bell tower, but don't worry the bells stop during the night!
We've totally renovated house, classified as 4 star by Ministry Tourism Purchased in March '14 the house has been, re roofed, re wired, dry lined and re-plumbed...We've been running vacation rentals for the past 12 years with 3 other properties advertised on here, it's easy to check us out!
The house has had partitions & walls knocked out, upstairs in particular to create the most gloriously proportioned master bedroom, a 2nd bedroom which with zip & lock bed can be either a large double or twin, plus upstairs a very well proportioned shower room with a substantial Italian walk in shower, double sink unit & loo.
Downstairs, the corridor (where we display all the memorabilia about The band of Brothers we have collected), leads into an open plan lounge with a fireplace (with a wood burner making a warm & cozy place for the chillier months), leading into the dining room and onto the kitchen which has been completely fitted out in deeps red kitchen units & aluminium appliances to include an American fridge (with on tap filtered water & ice), dishwasher, toaster, coffee maker, kettle etc. and on out to the very sweet walled garden with BBQ and a sun trap patio which has table and chairs for outside dining...plus also downstairs a utility room with a washing machine & tumble drier plus a separate loo/half bath.
Best of all... open the front door, one side you have oysters & moules direct from Utah Beach, by walking the length of the corridor you can return to the dining table with a dozen oysters for less than £5/$8 and fresher than any oysters possible... as these come from Utah Beach less than 4 miles away! The owners of the shop are part of the family that farm & cultivate the shellfish. Just make sure you have the white wine or champagne chilling in the fridge!
The other side of the front door 2 restaurants to choose from, across the street a butcher, who also does a dish of the day for takeaway and a selection of wines, 2 bakers in the village, the well stocked 'corner' shop even has chilled wine in the fridge...there is a hairdresser and a post office, couple of museums and an antique shop...
The house is beautifully presented, we've restored antique furniture, hand made curtains, I've even embroidered the towels, along with all the things a traveller will appreciate like top quality linen on the beds, big fluffy towels, towelling dressing gowns, the cupboards in the kitchen are stocked with oils, stock cubes etc. if my chickens are laying some freshly laid eggs from our little farm, WIFI throughout, washing machine, tumble drier...TV, DVD player plus we are on hand to offer a concierge service, we can organise car hire, war tours, restaurant bookings - we also do an in depth introduction to the area - where to go what to see and very useful tips about timings etc. We fully appreciate that a lot of our short stay guests have limited time here in this beautiful area with the problem what to see & what to do in your time frame...we're here to help maximise your experience.
Mont St Michel an hour away, Bayeux, American Cemetery, Omaha, Sword, Gold, Juno the other invasion Beaches less than 40 minutes, Point du Hoc & Grandcamp Maisy just the other side of the bay can be seen from the village. Carentan, Ste Mere Eglise all a matter of minutes away...then there is the Park Regional that we are in the heart of, a conservation area and an area of significant importance, with the marshes that flood in the winter and in the summer are grazing for the world class trotting horses bred here & the famous Normandy cows, walks, bike rides, coastline, dunes & cliffs, the beautiful Utah Beach is less than 4 minutes away which is not just a memorial but a gloriously sandy beach with Oyster beds, seals that pop up beside swimmers from time to time, amazing birdlife as there is a 1,200 hectare bird sanctuary on the beach, we've even seen dolphins, safe to swim, clean and not over crowded.
Parking is off street directly outside the house.

The Basse-Normandie region
Not only are we in the heart of the WW2 Invasion Beaches this area is rich in other history to include the 100 years war, William The Conqueror, The Romans and also The Vikings were good & busy here too!
Per square mile Normandy has more Chateaux & Castles per sq mile than anywhere else in France.
Then add to that we have all the fishing ports, Bayeux Tapestry, Mont St Michel, Granville with Christian Dior's museum, Giverny for Monet's garden, Honfleur...there is a huge amount to see & do...however staying here on The Cherbourg peninsula we are in the heart of the most glorious Park National with the most wonderful coastline, miles of sandy beaches, coves & cliffs, walks & views.
Our climate is mild...it never gets horribly baking hot - average 22 - 26 C in the summer then in the winter we sometimes don't even get a frost! Yes it rains & you don't come to Normandy for the weather you come to Normandy to explore & find the foods...
Park National Cotentin & Bessin, the most beautiful National Park...we are in the heart of it.

"Wow! The perfect place to explore Normandy and the D-Day beaches!"
Wow,....... is what our Normandy vacation was like at Tansy and Mike's historic house in Sainte-Marie-du-Mont! First off, the village is small, quaint and super friendly. We are Americans and have been visiting France for over 20 years, and we loved staying here in this village and house. The house sits right on the main street that circles the famous church. Across the street from the house is everything! It is very exciting during, before and after the week of D-Day. That is the time period that we rented the house. There are singers, music, a re-enactment World War II camp with real tents, uniforms, tanks, etc. The smell of roasting sausages fill the air that week from the local butcher at his concession stand. Delicious "moules" (mussels in English), are cooked fresh at a restaurant that is to the right of the house when one steps out the front door. Buy a bowl, a glass of white wine and a baguette and one has a scrumptious meal right next door! We met people from all over the world. Flags were waving. Sometimes we would stick our head out of the 2nd floor large bedroom window and just wave to everyone! :-) The house was very clean, had a washer and dryer, which was very convenient, a BBQ grill which we used, a big refrigerator and a large shower with plenty of fresh towels. We could have definitely stayed longer than 9 nights.....there was so much to do, but we left on June 8th and headed down to our house that we own with a rental property in southwest France in the Aveyron department. We rented the house over D-Day week for 9 nights. While we were there we visited the beaches, the World War II museums, Mont St. Michel, the Bayeux tapestry in the town of Bayeux, we bought copper at Villedieu-les-Poëles, which is a pretty little town that has been famous for making copper for centuries. We will definitely rent Tansy and Mike's house again when we travel back up to Normandy. It was perfect!
Thank you - we will definitely send anyone looking to venture further south to you...sounds like we have similar requirements for a vacation rental. 6th June week is an experience - it's not just staying in the area but immersing yourself into it all - a mix of party time at the same time with reflection and numerous ceremonies to honour those that gained our liberty...it was a pleasure to see you enter into the spirit of it all, that gives us a huge buzz when we see folk really enjoying their time here.
