Location description from owner

The Pays de la Loire region

One of the most popular holiday destinations in France, The Loire Valley conjures up romantic images of grand majestic castles and enchanting gardens. The area is steeped in history, the Loire having been the playground of the Kings and Dukes of France. The many Chateaux, Churches, Abbeys and ancient towns and cities such as Saumur, Angers, Chinon and Tours ensure some fantastic sightseeing.Known as 'the Garden of France', the Loire valley's fertile land is used extensively for market gardening, nurseries and fruit orchards with obvious appeal for keen gardeners. With its gentle landscapes and temperate climate, warmer seasons and less rainfall than the UK, the region is perfect for walking, cycling, fishing, bird-watching and horse-riding.Add to the mix the fact that the Loire valley is the third largest wine making region in France and you will have some idea of the wonderful diversity of the place. This rich heritage and the natural beauty of the area have contributed to the Loire valley being declared a UNESCO world heritage site. It is an area of diverse attractions and un-spoilt landscapes. It has something for everyone - little wonder it's so popular. A great place for lovers of history, sightseers and wine enthusiasts too!

“The perfect place to stay”

Reviewed 4 Aug 2013

The lovely Garden Apartment is a very comfortable, well-equipped home-from-home. We loved the pretty private garden which is a sun-trap and enjoyed being able to eat al-fresco every day; the daily bread delivery to our door was great! Shared use of the lovely swimming pool was a bonus, especially when it was so hot! Karin and Simon made us feel very welcome - nothing was too much trouble. We'd highly recommend booking one of Simon's wine tours and the dinners they host (very good value) where it's nice to meet fellow guests - the home-cooked food is delicious and the wine just fabulous! There's plenty to see and do in the area with several chateaux, markets, excellent restaurants and pretty towns and villages all within easy reach. We've stayed here five times and always find something new and interesting to do; this two-week break was a peaceful and wonderfully relaxing getaway.

“Highly recommended”

A fantastic stay from start to finish. We received a warm welcome & our every need was catered for during our stay. The garden cottage was spotlessly clean & a pleasure to spend time in.The towels really were fluffy & the linen crisp. The private garden was secure & well maintained with very comfortable garden furniture. The pool area was comparable to that of a 5 star hotel. We asked about using the bikes & in no time 2 bikes were delivered to us freshly washed & serviced. The roads around the village were perfect for gentle country bike rides. The wine tour was incredibly interesting. The wines that we bought there have been a big hit now that we are back home. We only wish we'd bought double the quantity. Thank you Karin & Simon.

“Quiet, restful and a convenient base for visiting Anjou and Western Touraine number of two eeks of”

We were delighted with the Garden apartment it was just as described on the owners website. It was secluded with its own courtyard and facilities of for eating outdoors. The pool was clean and very well maintained. We shared a meal with Karin and Simon and other guests on two occasions both of which were a great experience, the food, the wine and the company. It is well located for Saumur, Angers and some of the charteaux. We would have no hesitation in recommending the Garden apartment to our family and friends

“Ideal Position in a peaceful setting”

Reviewed 14 Sep 2012

The Garden Apartment is the best on offer at Manoir Gourain. The garden (with parking for your vehicle) is very private affording a peaceful outside space day and evening. The hosts were very welcoming, providing excellent accommodation along with a set of "house rules" which required the standards on arrival to be maintained. Which we thoroughly agreed with. The hosts also provided wine tours, evening buffets/barbeque of which you could involve yourself as much as you wished, or you could do your own thing. A nice touch was the delivery of fresh bread and croissant to your door each morning. There was also a booklet provided with maps showing places of interest, grocery shops and local restaurants etc. Although located in a hamlet, the position of Manoir Gourain is perfect for visiting surrounding chateaux and towns in the Loire region

“Excellent location, warm welcome, lovely property.”

This is a lovely property in the Loire, set in a tiny village you can really get away from it all and relax. The hosts provide a warm welcome and arrange evenings for you to dine with fellow guests if you so wish with great home cooking and local wine. The pool is beautifully set and you often find you have sole use. For a quiet relaxing break this place is fantastic with plenty of local attractions to visit. We have stayed here three times and have enjoyed every minute. Local towns offer shopping and restaurants within a 10-15 minute drive and the local wines are fantastic.

“Beautiful location to spend a relaxing holiday in the lovely wine area of Saumur.”

“Beautiful apartment in a relaxing location with wonderful hosts”

Reviewed 29 Jul 2012

We spent a wonderfully relaxing week in this superb garden apartment. The accommodation is very comfortable with everything you could possibly need and we enjoyed having the privacy of the pretty garden and shared use of the heated pool. Karin and Simon are delightful, attentive hosts with a wealth of local knowledge and are always on hand if they're needed. There are plenty of places to visit and explore, all within easy reach. Don't miss the opportunity to book a half or full-day wine tour with Simon (really interesting - we learned a lot) or to sample one of the evening meals shared with other guests - fabulous! The local wines are all wonderful (and inexpensive) - we came home with enough to last months! We love this region of France and we'll definitely be returning to stay in this lovely apartment.

“A Beautiful Gite in an Ideal Location with Outstanding Hosts”

Reviewed 4 Jul 2012

My wife and I had a wonderful week in this excellent Garden Flat which is ideally located to explore the Loire Valley and the Saumur district in particular. The accommodation is excellent, beautifully clean and with a private garden to enjoy. An extra joy is the that the owners are kind and friendly hosts who offer to provide an inexpensive welcome meal on the first evening and to host two additional evening meals with other guests during the week. Do not miss any of these. Also not to be missed, the alternative full day or half day wine tours offered by the owners. We took the full day tour, thoroughly enjoyed it, learned a lot from our experienced guide, and filled our car with excellent but inexpensive bottles of wine, enough to last at least 2-3 months!

“Beautiful Accommodation and Great Location”

Reviewed 12 Jun 2012

Karin & Simon the owners were excellent in that they had lots of local knowledge and were there if needed. The accommodation was immaculate and is an ideal place to get away and relax. There was all the technology you needed WIFI/TV/CD etc and the garden areas was very private to relax and unwind. If you wanted a swim the pool area is beautiful. We also had our own private entrance with secure gating and parking. The location was great in that you could get to many places to visit plus great walking or cycling. Simon the owner runs local wine tours and although on this occasion did not get the time to book a tour through conversations his expanse of knowledge was impressive so a must do next time. Definitely a great place to chill out, eat great food, visit lovely places and drink lovely wine plus the great accommodation.

Spent a wonderful week in the beautiful private Garden Apartment with use of a lovely, well maintained shared pool area. Easy access to many places of interest, highlighted in the information booklet provided. So useful if you don't have great knowledge of the area. Thoughtful, attentive hosts without being intrusive. We enjoyed the arrival supper platter and took advantage of the daily bread delivery! Thoroughly enjoyed this first visit to the Loire Region and hope to return.
