Location description from owner

The Pays de la Loire region

The Loire valley conjures up romantic images of grand majestic castles and enchanting gardens. The area is steeped in history, the Loire having been the playground of the Kings and Dukes of France. The many Chateau, Churches, Abbeys and ancient towns and cities such as Saumur, Angers, Chinon and Tours ensure some fantastic sightseeing.

Known as 'the Garden of France', the Loire valley's fertile land is used extensively for market gardening, nurseries and fruit orchards with obvious appeal for keen gardeners. With its gentle landscapes and temperate climate, warmer seasons and less rainfall than the UK, the region is perfect for walking, cycling, fishing, bird-watching and horse-riding.

Add to the mix the fact that the Loire valley is the third largest wine making region in France and you will have some idea of the wonderful diversity of the place.

This rich heritage and the natural beauty of the area have contributed to the Loire valley being declared a UNESCO world heritage site.

It is an area of diverse attractions and un-spoilt landscapes that make it one of the most popular tourist destinations in France. A great place for historians, sightseers and wine lovers too!

St Macaire du Bois

The following Chateaux are all within easy reach of Manoir de Gourin:
Saumur, Breze, Chinon, Villandry, Brissac, Angers, Usse, Azay le Rideau, Chateau d'Oiron, Langeais and Fontevraud Abbey.

Manoir de Gourin is surrounded by charming towns and villages:

Le Puy Notre Dame
Just 2 miles away is the charming village of Le Puy Notre Dame, on one of the pilgrimage routes from Canterbury to Santiago de Compostela . A recognised 'village of charm' noted for its beautiful, old limestone houses and its imposing 13th century church . In Puy you will find a bakery for your baguettes and croissants, supermarket, pharmacy, bar/tabac and two good bistros. It is traditionally a wine growing region and is the leading French commune for the production of AOC Saumur wines.

Doue la Fontaine
Five miles north is the bustling market town of Doue La Fontaine with good shops, cafes and restaurants. The town is famous for its splendidly unusual Zoo where animals are housed in a troglodyte environment. Doue is also the main centre of rose production in France and is known as "the City of Roses". It hosts a Rose Festival every summer when local caves are magically transformed by elaborate and exquisite displays. Monday is market day when the town comes alive with roadside stalls selling everything from local produce to French berets!

Montreuil Bellay
The charming medieval town of Montreuil Bellay, with its fairytale Chateau, monthly antiques market, pretty squares and fortified walls is 5 miles east. It is a picturesque place offering interesting walks and several places to eat. The river Thouet skirts the town with delightful picnic areas along the banks. Canoes/kayaks may be hired.

SAUMUR
15 miles away is the beautiful town of Saumur. On the banks of the majestic Loire, Saumur and the surrounding area has a wealth of Chateaux, Museums, Art Galleries, chic shops and gastronomic restaurants - a tourist hot spot. It is the National Equestrian Centre of France and home to the Cadre Noir Regiment. During the season the Cadre Noir present regular shows of outstanding horsemanship and offer guided tours of the school.

Throughout the summer months annual events are held to celebrate local produce and customs including Art, Music and Wine Festivals. The superb Fete de Saumur Champigny, a wine and food evening in Saumur with music and dancing is normally held during the first week of August.

Locally, on the last weekend in July, is a quite unique, classic car "Grand Prix" race through the ancient streets and around the beautiful old church of Le Puy Notre Dame. A marvellous and enjoyable spectacle. Please look at our own websites for more details and dates of these and other events.

There is a Paragliding and Microlight Club close by for any enthusiasts out there.
The area is suitable for rambling and cycling.

Touring and visiting the vineyards for wine tasting is huge fun. Please log on to our own website via the contact section below for details of the current wine tours / tasting courses run by Simon and for links to the attractions.

“Clean, well-organised gite in a beautiful secure setting”

Reviewed 2 Aug 2013

The gite itself is of a high standard, very clean and well-equipped - all set in the context of a beautiful manor house. The surroundings were very secure, with a locked front gate. Excellent instructions were given for everything, including the local area (places to visit etc.). We loved the swimming pool which was extremely well-kept and clean. Rosie appreciated the washing machine too! The Loire valley is a great place to visit. The only minor downside was that the 3 gites were so close that you could hear your neighbours conversations when outside. Simon and Karin were consistently helpful throughout.

“Modern, clean and comfortable cottage.”

Reviewed 19 May 2013

The property was as described on the website. It was in a peaceful location, with easy access to lots of interesting places in this part of the Loire Valley. The cottage was modern, clean, well maintained and well equipped for a comfortable stay. Although the weather was not warm enough for us to use the pool, it did look clean and inviting. Karin and Simon were always on hand to answer questions and give advice. They made us feel very welcome. The property was accessed through electronic gates which made us feel safe and secure.

“Very enjoyable stay, in a lovely part of France”

Reviewed 24 Sep 2012

We stayed in Montlouis cottage for a week in September. The owners are very friendly and accommodating and nothing is too much trouble. The cottage was very comfortable in a lovely setting surrounded by vineyards and charming local towns and villages. Would reccomnend the wine tour organised by the owners and definately the suppers in the house! All in all a very enjoyable and relaxing week with many things to see and do in the local area

“What a Great place”

Reviewed 18 Sep 2012

What can one say? Simon and Karin were the best of hosts and they were always available if you wanted any help. The cottage we stayed in was immaculate, with everything needed for the two us. If you do go and stay in one of the cottages, take advantage of Karin's cooking and Simon's knowledge of wine night. First you have a wine tasting of three wines, then an aperatif and followed by a four course meal, which is cooked superbly by Karin. If you have been doing the tourist thing and you feel a little tired after your journey, go and relax by the pool and have a sunbathe. All in all it is highly recommended and we can't wait to go back.

“Beautiful accommodation and charming hosts”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2012

We have stayed in gites over many years of travelling to France and we were both very impressed with the standard of Montlouis cottage. Everything from linen to decoration was of a high quality, and the powerful shower was better than ours at home! It felt like a real home from the beginning. Karin and Simon made us feel very welcome and were always available for a chat, or to advise where to visit. We loved our first night supper platter - this is such a good idea, and would advise anyone arriving after a long journey to order one up. We also thoroughly enjoyed the half day wine tour. Simon is a real expert on the subject and this was so interesting. Our bbq where we ate with all the other guests was also a really enjoyable evening, and a lovely way to get to know the others. Karin is a great cook. There are many places to visit in this area, and we particularly liked Montreuil Bellay and the brilliant zoo at Doue la Fontaine. This is a little village in the countryside, and we loved hearing the typical country sounds of sheep, horses and the odd owl. A little less keen on the cockerel perhaps! We will definitely be back; this was a lovely relaxing break.

“A little gem in the Loire”

Reviewed 6 Aug 2012

Booking self-catering, especially at the last minute, can be risky as we know. However, as soon as we arrived at Le Manoir from Nantes airport, we knew we had hit on a winner. Karin and Simon left their dinner table to introduce us to our fellow guests and settle us in. Due to our late arrival, a supper plate with wine had been arranged and left in the cottage for us. It was delicious and there was plenty left over for lunch the next day. Also, the daily delivery of bread and crosissants was a real plus. Our little cottage (one of three) was very well equipped, so much so that we got in to holiday mode right away. Open plan downstairs with a sweet little private terrace for breakfast and upstairs (steepish steps) a comfortable bedroom and a bathroom with decent shower. The pool area is delightful and private and some days we had it to ourselves. This is the land of chateaux and wine and there is plenty to see within reasonable driving distance - also some great restaurants. Our hosts, Karin and Simon, were very helpful but also very relaxed. No doubt we will be back.

“Luxurious romantic break in stunning surroundings”

Reviewed 28 Jul 2012

Stylish one bed cottage in the grounds of an elegant manoir in the heart of the Loire. The pool area is quiet, clean and relaxing (child free!). The hosts go the extra mile to make sure you have a comfortable stay recommending local restaurants and the most idyllic chateaux close by - they even booked a local tennis court for my tennis fanatic husband. They also offer a fabulous wine list, all of which can be purchased at very reasonable prices throughout your stay and can arrange exclusive tours to local vineyards for wine lovers (and novices like us!). We enjoyed a delicious meal at the manoir during our stay - recommend the blackcurrant tart! We are already planning to return with another couple next year. Surprised the Mr & Mrs Smith website haven't discovered this yet...
