St Mabyn

North Cornwall is home to some of the nation's areas of outstanding natural beauty. Rugged coastline, sandy beaches, hidden coves and lots of surf surrounded by glorious woodland, monuments and quaint fishing villages, gift shops, tea rooms and fantastic restaurants.

Wadebridge is a lovely town on the River Camel and has a real buzz about it. Super restaurants, riverside walks, the Camel Trail - all on your doorstep.

This area boasts the much vaunted destinations of Padstow, Port Isaac and Rock whilst being less than 20 miles from the hub of Newquay with its nightlife and glorious beaches. Boscastle, Tintagel and Bude lie to the North and Bodmin is surrounded by some of the most beautiful woodland anywhere with Cardinam Woods, Lanhydrock and Respryn.

St Mabyn is delightful little village with a small shop/post office and a lovely pub serving meals. It is quiet, quaint and all you would expect of a Cornish rural village. The location is so brilliant for the visitor however, with both the A30 and the A39 in striking distance taking to the northern most and southermost sights of the county.

“Lovely holiday”

Reviewed 25 Aug 2016

We really had a lovely week staying at Fernleigh. The cottage is spacious and the bedrooms are lovely. Very comfy beds and lovely crisp bedding. The bedroom and downstairs accommodation was perfect for our group (3 adults and one child) with space to eat at the table or outside in the lovely garden. I would mention a couple of things which could perhaps be improved? There is very little information in the cottage when you arrive. Bizarrely, we couldn't find any knives - eating knives not sharp ones - not in the drawers or the dishwasher or anywhere. I emailed My Place in Cornwall who we had an email address for but didn't get a response (until the next morning) but I found an old welcome letter in a pile of stuff in the living room. It had a number on it which I texted but it turned out it was for the people who stopped looking after the place in December last year!!! Having said that, she did know where the knives were - in a drawer in the kitchen tablets case you can't find them!! But it would also be nice if there was a bit more local info as well as important local numbers like doctors, hospitals, etc. Or places to visit, etc. There was some good advice about places to eat in Padstow but all of them smart and expensive. Plus the letter was in this pile of stuff rather than in a folder for us to look through (which we did have at the next place we stayed). I had to follow the Ethernet cable to find the WiFi router and find the little card in the slot with the code on it to access the WiFi. Perhaps in the info, the password could be freely available? Together with information on how to get the heating / hot water on? We didn't work this bit out but managed with the shower and dishwasher. Whatever people say, parking is an issue. We got a space over the road only on the day we arrived. Thereafter we had to park further up the road, either in the car park or squeezed onto an end of a road. The bathroom being downstairs can't be helped and its an nice bathroom with a good shower but it should be noted, don't walk about in socks on the stairs! They are charmingly wonky but also not carpeted! So they are quite slippery. I know I am sounding negative and it really is overall a very nice cottage and we did have a lovely week but one or two other things... Note, if you have small children, the front door opens directly onto the bend of the busy road with large farm vehicles passing regularly. Not onto a pavement but straight onto the road. The next door garden which you have to go through to get the key has two very barky dogs in it. The neighbours said only one person could go through to collect the key so my little one had to wait by the gate. The cottage is very spacious and homely. We settled in very well and were sorry to have to leave at the end of the week. Add a little info and it would be a 5 from me.

Many thanks for your review and feedback. We will certainly take note and deal with the things you have brought to our attention. We did email you back as soon as we received your email and you then emailed again to say you had found the cutlery in the kitchen table drawer so everything was fine. However, we can understand that it should be clear where things are. Regarding the parking, it is clear that the cottage doesn't have that facility. This is unfortunate, but there isn't anything that can be done. The cottage does front onto the road, but it is the road through the village and on a corner so the speed of vehicles should be appropriate to those conditions. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay. Many thanks again.
