About Us, Sarah-Jane & Gérald

As my Grandma (Annie) used to say “Stranger things happen at sea”! A visit to the Loire in 2006 didn't see me return. Today I'm Mme Beaumont, wife to Gérald, a bilingual French wine professional, and Mum to our two gorgeous children, Augustin (9yrs) and Constance (7yrs). Making our family '5' is our friendly rescue cat, Biscotte who you'll find sleeping amongst the flower beds. We warmly welcome you to our family home where we hope you will enjoy the peace of our village setting, the regions rich history and attractions, local cuisine and diverse wines.

---------------

The village of Pouançay and La Bellevue

A moments walk from La Bellevue is the reputed seafood restaurant the Trésor Belge, serving lunch and dinner, also popular is their 'happy hour' where Belguim beers can be enjoyed in their pretty garden (closed Mon & Tue).

Our peaceful village is a countryside setting of sunflower fields and vineyards. Choosing to relax at the cottage, stroll along vineyard pathways, cycle passing-by sleepy hamlets... being close to the market town of Montreuil-Bellay, between Saumur and Chinon, amenities, markets, flea-markets and discovery of the Loires rich history, majestic châteaux and attractions are all easily accessible.

---------------

Wine Tastings with Gérald, (a bilingual wine professional)

Discover the wines from the Loire Valley with Gérald during a fun and light-hearted wine tasting tutorial in our, once dwellings, troglodyte caves. Bilingual, French and a wine professional from an Angevin wine making family, Gérald will share inherent knowledge while introducing wines reflective of the regions diversity, explaining the tasting technique and the secrets hidden within a French wine label, and more...

Location description from owner

The Pays de la Loire region

Things to Do, Sights to See & Places to Visit - locally and arround :

Discover local fresh food markets. Weekend brocantes (flea-markets), and the quaint villages set along the edge of the Loire river. Explore too, an exceptional Bioparc in Doué la Fontaine. Hire a kayak/canoe or take a river boat ride along the Loire river from Montreuil-Bellay, Saumur and Chinon. Visit spectacular rose gardens, direction Cholet or potter around the historical Châteaux dominated towns of Amboise, Angers, Azay le Rideau, Brézé, Brissac-Quincé, Candes St. Martin, Chenonceau, Chinon, Fontevraud l'Abbaye, Langeais, Loches, Montsoreau, Montreuil-Bellay, Saumur, Richelieu, Tours, Ussé, Villandry - all of which make a fabulous day out.

St Leger de Montbrillais

St Leger de Montbrillais (2kms) :

A country lane takes you though a sleepy hamlet, past troglodyte caves and through the vines and sunflower fields before arriving to St Leger de Montbrillais. The village has a post office, baker (closed Wednesday and ask for the baguette named 'la tradition'). A highly reputed butcher much favoured by ourselves (try the rillettes d’oie and be prepared to queue on a Sunday morning!), alongside a little tabac (bar).

Montreuil-Bellay (8kms) :

The pretty medieval town of Montreuil-Bellay boasts a magnificent fairy tale Château whose impressive wall encloses the town centre today. An abundance of flower blooms throughout spring to the early months of winter, Montreuil-Bellay is a pretty town to discover. Host to a weekly market and a monthly Brocante (flea-market) there are a number of interesting restaurants to discover, the Château to visit and a lovely picnic area, shaded by trees, set along the edge of the river Thouet which flows through the town… while eating your baguettes the ducks will pay you a visit hoping for some crumbs!

Saumur (25kms) :

Twined with Warwick, England and Verden, Germany. The historical town of Saumur is set along the banks of the Loire river. Host to a fabulous Saturday market Saumur is also home to the famous Cadre Noir, the National Equestrian School of the elite French Cavalry, whose remarkable horsemanship can been seen at shows between April & October. Activities, exhibitions and wine festivals are scheduled throughout the year in Saumur and in July 2016, the 4th day of the Tour de France will be departing from Saumur! Saumur’s a worthy visit, if not only to see the Cadre Noir and the impressive Château, which has been lovingly restored, but to also enjoy the beauty of this stunning river side town in the heart of the Loire Valley, France.

“Best welcome and cleanest place we have stayed in!”

Reviewed 18 Apr 2013

A beautiful apartment in a lovely location. We had a very warm welcome from Sarah-Jane who seemed very genuine in wanting to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The place was so spotless that you might have thought it had never been used before. My husband developed a serious eye problem on the first morning and both Sarah-Jane and Gerald did everything they could to help us.They even rang around on the Monday to get us an emergency appointment with an opthamologist and Gerald offered to drive us there himself. We had lunch at his fabulous bistro in Saumur which is well worth a visit. This apartment would be enjoyable all year round as it has a very lovely view from the sofas and dinning area, so even on a cold day you can enjoy the Loire valley.

“Perfect in Every Way”

Reviewed 12 Aug 2012

Sarah-Jane was the perfect host and we liked her immediately. Her friendly manner and helpful advice made us feel instantly comfortable - from her smiling welcome at the security gate, her genuine insistence to call on her at any time, right through to waving us off at the end of our week. So, enjoying our holiday was made easy. The gite was spotlessly clean, beautifully styled, in a secure home setting and well provisioned with a refreshing attention to detail. We thoroughly enjoyed driving through the beautiful rolling plains of sunflowers, fields dotted with giant wheels of hay, rows of lush green vines and pretty wildflowers - the magnificent Loire River winding through it all. Marvelous chateaus, grand fortresses, medieval villages and charming stone villages are abundant in the area. Nearby towns and villages are large and small with plenty of restaurants, cafes and shopping centres to choose from. Don’t forget to visit Gerald’s (Sarah-Jane’s husband) bistro Les Tontons in Saumur – but don’t make our mistake and not make yourself known to him, Sarah-Jane was mortified when we told her as Gerald likes to spoil the guests of La Bellevue. Regardless we had one of the very best meals of our entire holiday and probably the best steak and frites we have ever had – unique in its flavour it was perfectly cooked and perfectly rested – even accompanied with the perfect generous proportion of perfect bread. That’s enough perfects from me – make sure you visit both if the Loire Valley is on your holiday itiniery.

“A perfect holiday - great cycling!”

Reviewed 4 Aug 2012

We recently spent two weeks at La Grange d'Henri and had an amazing holiday. We had never been on a gite holiday previously but it surpassed all our expectations. Sarah-Jane, Gerald and the family made us more than welcome from the moment we arrived and throughout our stay nothing was ever too much trouble. The gite was beautifully presented and was equipped with everything that we needed. We chose to cook in the gite most evenings and the decking outside our gite was perfect for al fresco dining. The village location is stunning among the vineyards and fields of sunflowers which were in full bloom. There are a number of larger towns nearby for which a car is required, but we found the local area perfect for cycling through charming rural villages. The roads are quiet and well maintained, and the French drivers very courteous towards cyclists. There were maps of the local area and guide books in the gite which was a nice touch. In addition, Sarah-Jane was always on hand to give us advice on routes and to share her knowledge of local facilities, attractions and places of interest. Both Sarah-Jane and Gerald have an obvious love of the Loire and leave no stone unturned to ensure that their guests make the most of their stay. We found the whole family (including Biscotte the cat!) to be great company and it felt more like staying with friends than renting a property. We will definitely return to La Bellevue in the future and would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking to visit this area.

“Home from Home in the beautiful Loire Valley”

Reviewed 30 Jul 2012

We cannot speak highly enough of this beautiful property. The welcome we received and the attention to detail within the property were outstanding. Every home comfort is there for you and the cleanliness of the property was excellent. On our first night we ordered the 'Découverte du Terroir' which was delicious and just what we needed after a long day travelling. We enjoyed sitting out in the evening watching the beautiful sunsets and admiring the lovely landscaped garden. Sarah Jane has certainly thought of every home comfort for her guests and is always more than willing to answer any questions you may have about the area. A wonderful experience. Thank you.

“Beautiful property, relaxing and charming hosts”

Reviewed 4 Jun 2012

The gite is small but was beautiful, immaculate and well presented. It was perfect for a couple to enjoy a quiet time away from it all. Gérald and Jane, the owners, are very hospitable without being intrusive to privacy. The area is lovely and there's lots to explore. You do need a car, but everywhere is easy to get to and find. There wasn't anything we didn't like about the place. We would definitely recommend it and hope to return again ourselves.

“A memorable week”

Reviewed 18 Apr 2012

We are a young couple with a four month only baby and can clearly say that we couldn't have selected a better place than 'La Grange d'Henri' to spend our easter break. We have found this gite as an exceptional accommodation on various levels, be it location, cleanliness comfort and overall environment. Complementing these factors were the gite's owners who have made our stay in the Loire Valley a truly memorable one, especially due to the personal care we've received. An important point that we'd recommend is for guests to make sure to visit Bistrot Les TonTons, owned by Gerald (owner of the Gite), a true wine expert that has taken great interest in explaining wine processes, with great patience. The Bistrot offers a genuine serene environment. We've received exceptional treatment at the Bistrot and a very warm welcome to our baby daughter. The food and wine was excellent, so much so that we have purchased wine to take home with us. We're very pleased to have selected 'La Grange d'Henri' as our first holiday destination as a family. We recommend this gite to anyone seeking peace of mind in terms of finding accommodation which accurately fits all its positive reviews and descriptions.

“Fantastic experience: beautiful location and homely, cosy accommodation”

Reviewed 21 Sep 2011

The Grange d'Henri is wonderfully well set up, very comfortable with everything you need to be self sufficient. Sarah-Jane is a terrific host, always anticipating your needs and wants - shopping, site seeing, places to cycle, interesting eateries - but without ever being intrusive. We even had the loan of a very cuddly cat! The Grange is surrounded by vinyards, fields of sunflowers and peaceful villages, but with easy access to major routes to towns in the western Loire. We can't speak highly enough of this as a holiday location and a base for exploring this lovely part of France - Sarah-Jane and Gerald are fabulously thoughtful and great to know.

“A great place to unwind”

Reviewed 4 Sep 2011

This is a great place to unwind, recharge your batteries and generally relax. Le Grange d’Henrie can be found in the heart of the Loire region with great access to all that the area has to offer, Saumur being the closet town of any size is just 15 mins away. Le Grange is clean, fresh and modern with is touch of style...... and very well appointed; particularly the cooking facilities and so if eating in is your preference then local ingredients can be found quite easily or the nearest supermarket which is only 5 mins away. Alternatively, if cooking on holiday is not your thing then you might want to eat in one of the many superb local restaurants, several of which are set alongside the Loire River itself and again only 15 mins away. The owners, who we have stayed with before in another of their Gites, strive to ensure you’ll enjoy your stay and cannot do enough to make that possible. If you like your wine then there is another good reason to come here as Gerald (the owner) is the man to speak to. If there is anything worth know about fine wines then I’d be very surprised if he didn’t know about it. Oh, and be sure to ask about the Bistrot Les Tontons………..definitely worth a visit!!

“A gem of a cottage in the beautiful Loire Valley”

Reviewed 14 Aug 2011

We recently spent a wonderful and truly relaxing week at La Grange Henri. Sarah-Jane and Gerald, the owners of the cottage, could not have been more helpful or accommodating providing excellent insider tips on villages, markets and local spots to visit. We also had the pleasure of an afternoon "wine experience" with Gerald - highly recommended and the perfect start to our week! The cottage was beautifully equipped, clean and comfortable. For a couple that loves to cook, the kitchen was brilliant and we spent many wonderful evenings cooking and and then enjoying our meals on the lovely patio and soaking up the long evenings. The cottage is within easy reach of many beautiful villages, chateaux and towns well worth visiting. We took our own car and this is a must to fully enjoy the area. All in all it was a fantastic week away and we would highly recommend the cottage and excellent hospitality from Sarah-Jane and Gerald.

“La Bellevue is a little piece of heaven in the midst of the Loire Valley.”

Reviewed 23 Jun 2011

We stayed a week in La Grange d'Henri as part of La Bellevue's self-catering/B&B and enjoyed every bit of our time there. Sara-Jane, proprietor and host, couldn't have been more helpful, outlining an itinerary of chateaus, restaurants, sweet villages to visit. We had rented a car (a must) and took advantage of all her recommendations, happy that we did. Husband Gerald gave us tips on wine and insights from one who is steeped in the life of the domain. Accommodations were clean, modern, and spacious for the two of us, a delightful blend of of old world and new. The patio was perfect for sunny breakfasts or dinners. We often brought back our own fresh groceries and bottles of wine, took lingering walks among the vineyards in the evenings, listened to the church bells, and enjoyed the company of Sarah Jane, husband Gerald, and children as schedule allowed. Who could ask for more?
