Description from owner

Go on, treat yourself. Crugkern Barn is situated at the head of the quiet, picturesque Cot Valley and set between the moorlands of West Penwith and surrounding farmland yet within easy reach of the attractive and vibrant small town of St Just (5 minutes away) with its wide range of local services. Set in the grounds of the owners' home, and within the West Penwith Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Crugkern Barn is a small, tastefully converted barn in a modern style, providing high quality accommodation for 2 people with its own gardens, outdoor seating areas and parking. It is easy to get to by road, or, if you prefer public transport, by rail to Penzance then a short (regular service) bus journey to St Just.

It is ideal for those wishing to spend time in the peace and quiet of a rural Cornish valley but with easy access to the other attractions of West Penwith. Sennen Cove, with its half a mile of golden sand is just 10 minutes drive away offering swimming and surfing in a majestic setting, or you may prefer the smaller, secluded coves such as Porth Nanven, where the River Cot meets the Atlantic, or Cape Cornwall. The Cot Valley and adjacent granite sea cliff coast are renowned for their wildlife, and offer stunning coastal walks within easy reach of the barn via a network of quiet lanes and footpaths. It is an ideal base for those wishing to walk sections of the West Penwith leg of the Cornwall Coast Path. Penzance is just 10 minutes drive away, with its wide range of shops and services, and Land's End is a similar distance. Places such as Marazion, St Michael's Mount, the fishing ports of Newlyn and Mousehole and the 'Poldark coast' (where much of the series was filmed) with its rich industrial mining heritage are all within a 15-20 minute drive so there is always something to do or new and interesting places to see. If you fancy a trip to the Scilly Isles then Land's End airport offers regular flights, or you may prefer to go by sea on the Scillonian from Penzance.

The barn offers comfortable, high quality accommodation comprising an open-plan bedroom, living room and kitchen area and a separate bathroom with new electric shower, wash basin, WC and heated towel rail. High quality linen and towels are all provided together with complimentary luxury toiletries. The barn enjoys electric heating should you require it. The living area includes a double bed (with under bed storage), a sofa, a TV with integrated DVD player and free WiFi. There is a small table and chairs in the kitchen/dining area or you may prefer to eat outside in the garden. On arrival you will find a 'welcome pack' of tea, coffee, milk and eggs provided together with a loaf of home-made bread and local cheese just to get you started. The kitchen area, with its granite work surfaces and inset sink, is equipped with an electric oven, a four-ring induction hob, a fridge, and matching Dualit toaster and kettle. Outside is under cover storage for beach gear, body boards and anything else you may not want in the barn. There is a BBQ for those fine, summer's evenings in the garden and a washing line to dry your swimming stuff. If you fancy a trip out then we have also provided a 'day sack' which includes a small rucksack, a picnic rug, sandwich box, thermos flask and a local OS map. You are very welcome to use this if needed.

The quality of the light in Cornwall has always attracted artists and photographers so if these are your interests then West Penwith could be the place for you. The owner is an artist specialising in silk painting and a member of the Silk Painters Guild. There is a studio adjacent to the barn so if visitors fancy having a go at this art form then silk painting sessions can be arranged. Contact the owner for details.

Crugkern Barn is a no smoking area and to ensure minimal disturbance in this wildlife-rich area we are also unable to take pets.

“The perfect retreat”

Reviewed 7 Sep 2018

This holiday was perfect from start to finish. Superb location, 5 star accommodation and Rick the owner could not be more helpful. They really have thought of everything to make your stay there a fabulous experience and every aspect of the accommodation is of the highest quality. Can’t wait to go back. Thanks again Rick and Chris

Owner's reply: Chris and I are delighted that you enjoyed your time here, and thank you for your kind words. We've tried hard to make sure that our visitors have everything they need, both in the barn and for their trips out. We are blessed by our location as the barn is secluded and quiet yet a wide range of places are easily accessible whatever your interests.

“Lovely stay”

Reviewed 18 Jul 2017

We have had an amazing time! Rick and Chris were very helpful and made our stay so comfortable that we wish we could stay longer. Location is great, couple of minutes drive to coast, close to Lands End and other famous places like St. Ives. Barn is just beautiful and has everything you need for perfect romantic stay. Me and hubby absolutely loved it and we will be back

Owner's reply: It was a real pleasure to have you stay here Marta. Thank you for your cheerful company. Chris and I are delighted that you enjoyed both the barn and the local area, and look forward to seeing you again soon. As you said, the area has a lot to offer whatever your interests so I promise you will not be bored!

“Beautiful barn and surrounding gardens - plenty to do”

Reviewed 25 Jun 2017

We had a lovely time staying at Crugkern, despite the weather being a bit wild. We were very cosy in the barn and found everything to be of the highest quality and very well thought out. We had some very enjoyable trips out to the Minack Theatre (where the sun shone!), to St. Ives and to the Levant mines. We loved being shown around Rick's amazing garden and he very generously gave us several plants to bring home which are doing well. We hope to come back. Many thanks.

Owner's reply: Chris and I are pleased you enjoyed your stay here. We find that here in the far west any 'wild' weather goes through very quickly, and often at night, leaving lovely Cornish sunshine in its wake. I'm glad you enjoyed the gardens. This recent warm weather has given them a real boost and I'm having difficulty keeping up with it! As you said, we are blessed with a host of things to do locally whatever your taste or interests. Plenty to choose from when you do return. It will be a pleasure to see you again.

“Amazing Place and Lovely People”

We arrived to find in there immaculately clean and well furnished condo a fresh home made by Rick loaf of bread with some lovely Cornish Cheese. We would not hesitate to book this lovely place again thank you so much for a lovely weekend Rick and Chris .

Owner's reply: Chris and I are delighted that you enjoyed your weekend here and would be very happy to see you again should you fancy another break in the 'wild west'. Glad you enjoyed the bread and yarg cheese. It is a bit different and always seems to be a winner. Enjoy the rest of the summer.
