The Rhône-Alpes region
In winter, the region boasts anything from off piste extreme skiing made famous by the local freeski star, Candide Thorvex through to kilometres of open groomed pistes perfect for beginners, families and intermediates or fully kitted out snow parks. Both resorts are rated Famille Plus by the French authorities which they have qualified for through offering the highest level of services for children of all ages. Ski schools, creches, alternative snow and non-snow based activities etc are all provided and able to be arranged for you. Besides alpine/downhill skiing you can enjoy cross country skiing on the 100s of kilometers of daily groomed trails in the valleys, try your hand at biathlon (shooting and skiing), snow shoeing, ski jöering (skiing pulled by a horse), dog sledding, enjoying the fine dining around the valley, swimming in a stunning heated outdoor 25m pool by the slopes, enjoy a day in a 5 star spa, snow running, sledding, snowman making, etc. The options are limited only by your time and preferences. We are happy to help with this. International ski schools and mountain guiding in English and other languages operate in both resorts in addition to French lessons and guides. Select as best suits your needs and preferences.
In Summer the valley perfectly placed and set up for cycling (road and mountain bike), walking, trail running, climbing and canyoning, horseriding or many other outdoor pursuits of larger or more calm type for adventurers from 2-92 years old. The cycling in this region is legendary. Le Grand Bornand has played host to the Tour de France 6 times. Col de Colombiere (base 3kms away), Col des Aravis (base 1km away), Col de Croix Fry (base 1km away) and multitudes of others are all within an easy riding distance of the chalet. For the mountain bikers the Roc des Alps held in June each year in La Clusaz has created the network of well marked graded trails from 3kms to +60kms from easy rolls on dirt roads to super technical descents serviced by ski lifts in the summer months. Walkers and runners can delight in their own dedicated paths that include the famous GR96 that traverses the valley and mountains, high mountain walks up amongst the eagles, big horned wild deer and marmots or just lovely easy paths through the forests along the rivers to find the hidden waterfall 5 minutes from the village. Kids are equally spoilt for choice. Besides the above, there are adventure courses, horseriding opportunities, archery, trampolining and even the largest kids festival in Europe, Le Festival des Mômes held in August. Just 25 minutes drive away is the lovely alpine lake, Lake Annecy offering all the watersports, castles and lovely lakeside towns.
Come and stay in our beautiful home and use it as your base to discover the lovely Aravis Valley.
