The gite has a well equipped kitchen for more adventurous cooks. Meals can be shared inside or outside in the adjacent garden under the shade of cherry trees. June is cherry season and guests are welcome to pick and eat as many cherries as they like. Local markets have fresh seasonal produce grown on our doorstep and the resident hens are happy to provide fresh eggs on request.

Bedrooms are comfortable with adequate storage. One with a king sized bed and the second is a twin with 2 small double beds. The lounge is spacious with a beamed chateau ceiling and a comfortable place to relax on hot days and evenings, with beautiful views of the Vercors mountains and Doux river valley. A wood burner in fireplace and a large flat screen television with satelite UK viewing provide cosy evenings in the winter months. The area is celebrated for cycling and June/July sees the Ardechoise one of the largest road races in France. Guests wishing to bring cycles are welcome to store them in the secure outbuildings on the farm, local rental is also available.

Further details outdoors

The garden is private and surrounded by cherry and apricot orchards with outside furniture for relaxing and eating and a barbecue area with gas barbecue. Outside space is particularly important to us in this part of the country as much of the year is spent outdoors in garden, fields, orchards and vinyards for pleasure and work.

Walks on the Grand Randonee 42 are accessible from the doorstep and the wider area is celebrated for walking to suit all standards.

Location description from owner

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region

The Ardeche is a well known holiday destination for the French and offers some exciting opportunities for the adventurous. However, it also offers quieter, more sophisticated treats for wine lovers, gastro buffs and historians. The neighbouring department of the Drome is celebrated for its scenery and geological treasures in the hills and grottes of the region.

St Jean de Muzols

The towns of Tournon sur Rhone and Tain L'Hermitage offer year round spectacles to visitors. Valence, the capital city of the Drome, is within a 20 minute drive of Tournon. Wine tasting, caving, canoeing, walking, swimming, horse riding are all easily found locally throughout the year. Chocoholics will delight in visiting one of the world's most distinguished chocolatiers Val Rhona in the adjoining village of Tain l'Hermitage.

“Very peaceful & great views”

Reviewed 22 Oct 2016

A great location for exploring the towns around the Rhone and also the beautiful Vercors Massif, not to mention the immediate vicinity of the gorge du Doux which can be explored by steam train, the station of which can be seen down in the valley from the gite. Lots of walks from the gite which has a number of outside seating / dining areas including a very pleasant sheltered garden. Hosts are lovely people with helpful advice to make the most of the holiday, but not at all intrusive.

Owner's reply: Hello brycat,, thank you for your kind review. We are so glad that you enjoyed your time at le vitrier and wish you future happy hols.

“A gloriously relaxing place to stay”

Reviewed 23 Jul 2014

There is a good atmosphere about Le Vitrier. Nestled in the hills above Tournon sur Rhone, the Gite has fantastic views over the town towards the vinyards of Tain l'Hermitage and the distant Alps. If you get tired of that, the garden offers a delightful peaceful area to relax and enjoy your meals. You feel as if you are right out in the Ardeche countryside, but within ten to fifteen minutes drive you can be in the town. The kitchen is well equipped, the rooms well-furnished and spacious. Do note though that there is no air conditioning. There is ample private outdoor space at the front and the back with all the facilities including a barbecue. You will need your satnav or follow the owners clear instructions carefully to find the Gite for the first time, but it is well worth the effort, and you soon learn the route!. The resident English owners plus their assortment of animals make you completely welcome, and will do all they can to make your stay enjoyable. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and would recommend it wholeheartedly.

“VIVE LE VITRIER! YOU'LL FALL IN LOVE--WE DID.”

This little gem is hard not to love. It is nestled atop a hill overlooking the Hermitage. The only thing that compares to the beautiful views out the rental, the wonderful towns in the area and the gardens in which your stay will be set are the owners Candy and Tony. We spent a week here, and both Candy and Tony made the trip for us. They are both so knowledgeable about the areas, events and things to do. We were never bored, and they know how to entertain. We love them dearly. This is the place if you want a basecamp to go antiquing. Candy knows every place to buy exquisite for inexpensive French country antiques. We love it, the area, and tem so much, we are trying to buy the place next door. Everything about this place is A++++.

“Gîte et accueil chaleureux avec vue imprenable”

Reviewed 4 Aug 2013

“Outstanding views of the mountains with a glass of something cold, watching the sun go down. No better way to end a day.”

Reviewed 15 Jul 2013

Travelled day the French air traffic controllers went on strike so Tony kindly arranged for us to be able to get in at silly o'clock AM. Very helpful and steered us towards some beautiful places to go sightseeing. The Gite was lovely and clean and larger than expected with a fully equipped kitchen, set in a beautiful spot in the hills overlooking the valley and vineyards with places to walk from the door. Really enjoyed the pick your own cherries and the garden was just a delight to sit in and relax each evening following a hard days meandering, the roses were especially lovely.

“Lovely and quiet - fantastic hosts”

Reviewed 21 Aug 2012

Enjoyed a fantastic 2-week holiday in this lovely gite close to Tournon-Sur-Rhone. Very friendly and helpful english owners. Discrete but always there, when we needed them. The house is wonderful with a very well equipped kitchen - there's been payed great attention to details, that just makes your stay a little bit better. The garden is lovely and peaceful with good possibilities to just soak in the sun or recline in the shadow beneath an old tree reading a good book. Nice walks on the hillsides, and the river great for both fishing and swimming with some quiet and secluded pools. Don't forget to visit The Valrhona Chocolate shop in Tain by the way. And if you get tired of hiking and visiting wineyards, Lyon is only an hour by train from Tain. Would definitely like to return...

“Peaceful, comfortable country house with beautiful view”

Reviewed 11 Jun 2012

We had a very friendly welcome from Tony, who was available to help us with planning our walks and activities. The local cherries were in season, and were absolutely delicious. The farmhouse was well fitted out, with a full kitchen, but only one bathroom for the 2 bedrooms. Overall we had a very relaxing stay, and loved looking out over the valley and mountains to the snow covered Alps. There is a significant drive up windy roads which may be considered a drawback, and the cottage is quite isolated at the end of the road.

“A lovely retreat”

Reviewed 28 Aug 2011

A well-equipped gite in a beautifully quiet location. Plenty of walks, river swimming in the Doux valley, and charming hill towns and villages to visit. Even though we visited in August it was fairly quiet - the area seems to be undiscovered by British visitors. Candy and Tony made us feel very welcome and their knowledge of the area was invaluable for ideas for things to do. The layout of the accommodation, including the balconies and gardens, gave us complete privacy but also meant that we could easily ask for help when needed.

“A perfect cottage in a stunning French location - a real hidden gem”

Reviewed 10 Aug 2011

This property is so good we have rented it twice - a real hidden gem. The garden is tranquil, perfect for sunny eating out at breakfast or into the evening to the sound of cicadas in the nearby fields. The surrounding countryside is really beautiful with secluded river swimming, fabulous walks (to the river) from the cottage, vineyard visits, winetasting and really authentic markets on your doorstep - as a family of beachlovers we didn't miss the sea at all. The cottage itself is simply excellent. There is a real chef's kitchen to cook in plenty of space and all the kit to make any sort of cooking a pleasure. The views from the large lounge onto the Alps and surrounding valley from the balcony are fantastic. The beds are new and comfortable and the towels and linen better-than-hotel standard. There are also lots of special touches: feeding the goats in the owners' nearby field, a survival kit of wine, coffee, bread and cheese and most of all, friendly owners who you sense really do feel the most important thing is for you to have a wonderful stay and provide everything you need. Overall it is a stunning place to stay in a part of France which appears to be largely devoid of volume tourism and gives the real French experience. We loved it and our young children loved it.
