Bring your own tennis racquets, as guests have access, free of charge, to the tennis court of the commune - a 3-4 minute walk from the cottage. You can also use the table-tennis table there and the boules pitch.
Parking - room for one car (or two small ones) in the front drive.
Accessibility - There is level access to the ground floor but the staircase is quite steep with restricted headroom and could be difficult for anyone with limited mobility (all bedrooms are upstairs); toddlers would need supervision on the stairs; and children should not be allowed on to the balcony running along the first floor frontage except under supervision.
Bedlinen and towels provided, but not beach/pool towels - please bring your own.
The Poitou-Charentes region
The River Charente meanders through the countryside only a few minutes from Chez Guérin. Along its banks are pretty little towns, once thriving river ports but now quiet backwaters. Notable are Taillebourg, Port d'Envaux and Saint-Savinien-sur-Charente, all offering pleasant walks along the banks and attractive waterside restaurants and cafes. There are several attractive chateaux and grounds worth a visit, for example the nearby Chateau de la Roche-Courbon.
Further downstream the river loops around the town of Rochefort, site of La Corderie Royale built in 1666 to make the rigging for the warships of the French Navy.Close by is the dockyard where the a reconstruction of the Hermione, the frigate that took Lafayette to fight in the American War of Independence, was built. Guided visits are possible when she is in port. Nearby Marennes is the capital of French (and indeed European) oyster production. Fouras, on a peninsula, has a well-preserved Napoleonic fort and good beaches.
The nearest beaches are about 45 minutes away. A string of pretty, lively (in season) seaside towns stretches from the Gironde estuary northwards, each with clean, spacious beaches set in sheltered bays: Meschers-sur-Gironde, Saint-Georges-de-Didonne, Royan, Saint-Palais-sur-Mer. Further north, the coast becomes wilder - indeed "sauvage",as its name says - with miles of beach, and sometimes rough seas, backed by pine forests. Alternatively, try the pretty islands of Ile d'Oléron and Ile de Ré, both about an hour's drive. They can be very busy in high season: avoid weekends and public holidays, otherwise you may see little but traffic jams.Inland a tour of one of the major cognac distilleries in Cognac provides an interesting day out. A little further afield, but possible to visit on a day trip, are the vineyards of Bordeaux The major port and industrial centre of La Rochelle with its picturesque medieval harbour, city walls and streets of shopping arcades is an hour to the north.
The nearest small town providing all shops and services is St-Savinien-sur-Charente, less than ten minutes away. It also has an open air swimming pool and a boating lake. Boats on the River Charente may also be hired here.
Chez Guérin looks towards two lovely old towns: to its north is the medieval town of St-Jean d'Angély, for centuries a way station on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella. To the south is Saintes, with its fine amphitheatre dating back to Roman times. Both towns offer a wide range of restaurants, cinemas, entertainments and shops. St Jean d'Angély, less than 15 minutes from Chez Guérin, holds a lively colourful market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It also has a water park, the Centre Aquatique Atlantys. Saintes, some 20 minutes drive, also holds its market on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the foot of the cathedral.
Excellent walks can be found throughout the area. For instance, the disused railway line that used to run from St-Jean d'Angély to Taillebourg runs just below the house and has been turned into a lovely walking path. The quiet lanes and lightly used roads around Chez Guérin are ideal for cycling. Bring your own bikes or hire in advance from a local company who can deliver to you.
