Description

The Sail Loft started life as a warehouse for sails and netting, it has now been lovingly converted into a comfortable, well equipped cottage with a spacious open plan living area and bedrooms with high, open beamed ceilings.

With a wet room next to the entrance, (perfect for washing off a sandy day at the beach), a large family bathroom, three good sized bedrooms and plenty of living and dining space for 6 it's an ideal base for friends and family looking to enjoy a holiday right in the heart of St Ives.

The location is hard to beat. There are three fantastic beaches around three minutes' walk away, (the harbour is less than two minutes' walk), there are two galleries and a cafe literally seconds from the front door and the shops, restaurants and cafes are a pleasant five minute walk away.

The large open plan ground floor, (incorporating kitchen, dining area and living area), is great for a holiday where you want to spend time together with friends and family. If you're eating in, (if you can resist fish and chips and pasties!), the cook isn't tucked away in another room away from the rest of the party.

There are lots of original features which give the property real character and serve as reminders of its previous life as a sail loft. Look closely at the main supporting beam in the living area and you'll see it is a mast from a ship.

Whilst there are hints to its former use, we have bought things up to date by providing a wii, free wifi, electric wood burner style stove, an iPod dock and a freeview television with built in DVD player ... just in case the sun doesn't shine!

We've tried to think of everything that will help you have a fantastic holiday, (and are always open to suggestions on how we can improve things further).

So just what is it that makes Cornwall special? The mighty cliffs and crashing waves? The glorious sandy beaches? The wild moorlands and peaceful woodlands? The friendly smiles and warm welcomes? The fantastic food and lively arts scene? Well, we think it’s all of the above, the only difficulty is that St Ives is so fantastic its hard to tear yourself away to explore the rest of this magnificent county!

St Ives

In a 2011 poll, the beaches of Cornwall were identified as amongst the best in Europe - beating anything that Spain, Italy and France have to offer and St Ives was voted the top UK beach resort. A £100 million clean up campaign has led to the beaches of St Ives being among the cleanest in Britain, (think pale sand and turquoise water) and its position, close to the tip of Cornwall and the end of the Gulf Stream, means it has a mild climate and warm winters.

But even if you're not planning on building sandcastles, St Ives has so much to offer; fantastic scenic walks, surfing, art, fantastic food, great shopping, pasties, fish and chips, ice cream, cream teas, (sorry getting a bit fixated on the food theme)!

Seals populate the harbour, while dolphins, porpoises and even basking sharks can also be seen.

If you've been St Ives you'll know what a magical place it is. If you've never been, treat yourself to a trip and you'll soon be wanting to visit again.

“Wunderschönes Apartment”

Das erste Mal mit Kindern in England ging nach St. Ives und wir hatten das Glück, zwei Wochen im "The Sail Loft" verbringen zu können. Eine liebevoll eingerichtete Ferienwohnung mit drei Schlafzimmern und 2 Bädern (das zweite am Eingang um Sand etc. gleich abzuspülen). Die Wohnung ist nicht nur ideal im Herzen von St. Ives gelegen, sondern auch ganz liebevoll und geschmackvoll mit vielen schönen Accessoires ausgestattet...mit Bett- und Tischwäsche genauso wie mit allen modernen Elektrogeräten. Es war sauber, liebevoll eingerichtet und die Betreuung durch Greta von Anfang extrem gastfreundlich. Wir haben uns selten so wohl in einer Ferienwohnung gefühlt und hatten eine wunderschöne Zeit.

The cottage is warm and cosy. The rooms are lovely and our stay was great! It is within close walking range of most of the sights. The beach and tate both located less than 5 minutes walk away. The facilities within the cottage are also excellent!

The property was in a fantastic location, about 10 minutes walk from the beach and not much further from St Ives station. We were a group of 3 students but the cottage could have easily slept more of us. Everything we needed was provided, for example pots and pans, beds made with spare blankets, tea and coffee, wifi etc. It was easy to book and a pleasure to stay in. We felt very at home here and extremely welcome.

From the moment we pushed open the front door we felt immediately at home at Sail Loft and have raved about it to friends and family since getting home. If you're looking for a house with a view this isn't for you, however if you are looking for a spotlessly clean, tastefully decorated, superbly equipped, cosy (in terms of comfort not size!) pad in the heart of St Ives then look no further. It's easy walking distance from the harbour and the main beaches so its an ideal base to explore St Ives from. The living area is a really good size with two great sofas to relax on after a bracing walk on the beach. The bedrooms are lovely, all generously sized doubles so it comfortably sleeps six adults. Once we all returned to our respective day jobs after a weekend away there were plenty of emails going backwards and forwards about how much we wanted to be back at The Sail Loft! Although the parking is a little way from the house it wasn't an issue at all. Parking in St Ives is always really difficult so having a space at all was a bonus. Having said that the only time we saw the car all weekend was once to unpack it and again to repack! This place is a true gem where the owner has really thought about the small details that make a stay memorable. Booking was really easy and the owner could not have been more helpful or accommodating. I can't speak highly enough about the entire experience - I just hope it doesn't become so popular that it's booked up next time we want to go!!!

“A fantastic holiday home”

We are a part of a group of four / five families who have been renting properties in St Ives, every summer and many New Year weeks for over ten years and have probably racked up experience of over 25 properties between us. We have become a discerning mob and The Sail Loft makes our top three (number one no longer rents and number two is rather overpriced). Greta makes number one landlady. First for location. Two parents and two grown daughters all bone idle chefs - being able to buy take away hot food and still have it hot when it's on the table is vital for us. Everything you need is near to hand, despite actually being in one of ther quietest properties I have ever stayed in. Equally important that it's a 'pop back' distance from two fantastic beaches rather than a trek. Staggering distance from the many restauarants and pubs around the front and Fore Street - quite important if as occassionally happens - the skies open. I can also be on the coast path in ten minutes - Zenor bound for the obligatory pint(s) in the Tinner's Arms. There is no need whatsoever for a car. Mine languished in Island Road car park for a fortnight and all I needed to do was pop back once every three of four days to remove seagull offerings from my paintwork. They will put you a daily paper aside at Norfolk Stores if you ask nicely - a gruelling hundred yard walk away. Best for me was Olive's Cafe upstairs (but don't be put off - you hardly hear them). Adrian and his staff are so welcoming and fantastic neighbours - and so nice to have afternoon tea sitting just a few feet from your own front door. Warning though. The Bakewell Tart is irresistible. Impossible to walk past the door and not call in for a chinwag with Adrian and - oh OK then - just one more small (sic) slice. St Ives itself - 'nuff said. Our problem is our grown children still want to come with us. I could write a book on 'Why I Keep Coming Back To St Ives' but I don't want everyone turning up at what is Britain's best little secret - but this is about the Sail Loft. The layout suited us perfectly. Three double bedrooms - so our girls can bring their partners and with a large bathroom and an additonal shower room - there's no tripping over each other. Plenty of room to lounge around on the compulsory one wet day in Six? Five? The kitchen is large and if so inclined, would suit the self catererer. I'll' only assume the cooker worked (to be honest, everything else did). The table will easily eat six in comfort. The standard of furnishing is very high. We've found a lot of quite nice properties but finished on the cheap. Not so here. My menory fails me - two comfy sofa's if I'm right and good decent beds. I like the layout of the entrance - no need to drag anything from the beach into the house it can live in the shower room or as my daughters prefer, dumped inside the door. The booking process was really easy and the house was immaculately clean when we arrived. The standard of decoration was good- sometimes these places can seem a little tired - not here. There was some small issue - I forget now - leaking pipe or something - whatever - it was minor, but one call to Greta and it was fixed with no hassle. She checked to make sure we OK and we had a nice card afterwards thanking us for staying. Nothing was too much trouble and she was genuinely interested in our enjoyment. We had a couple of days rain for which she apologised! Charming lady. I'd thoroughly recommend The Sail Loft. The entourage is growing so we may have to look for something bigger, sadly. I'll be back upstairs for the Bakewell Tart though. PS As this was I think their second rental of their first summer season, they had worked hard to get the place ready but had been let down by service providers in fixing internet access (sadly I have to take work with me on holiday) Greta was very apologetic and even in the few days before we arrived she was trying to cajole the MD of the service provider to get it fixed. She rang us at home to explain before we left. These things happen. If it's urgent, they will ring me. Anyway there's an internet cafe on Fore Street. I'll wager that's all fixed now.

“Practically Perfect in every way”

Taking a 4 yr old anywhere on holiday is a bit of a parental logistical dilemma. Let alone promising him you'll take him to the beach (in September, in the UK!) and he can dig sand and have a great time. So we needed to make sure there was plenty to do within walking distance of anywhere that we stayed, and also a quick nip away to some amazing indoor activities in case of persistent rain! St Ives was a brilliant choice for that and the Sail Loft was perfectly located, being within an easy 5 minute walk of the beach, the Tate and Pizza Express - three things guaranteed to keep our little one smiling! Actually there are three beaches that we could easily walk to, although we tended to go to the main front because of the lovely food places and gorgeous little shops along the way. Unfortunately I found two boutique children's stores and my bank hasn't quite gotten over the shock! It was delightful that there were lots of boats in the harbour all the time, so that when the sea went out, the children could explore the anchors and the whelks and the little puddles of water around them. So picturesque. The Sail Loft itself was just perfect for our needs. The downstairs floor is all open plan, which meant Ben and his little friend could play happily while we sorted out our bags for the day, prepared lunch, ate lunch etc! The kitchen is a good size with everything you need for a self catering stay. The table was easily big enough to sit 6 around, though you could probably seat more. The Wii was a bit of a godsend on the one afternoon that was a bit gloomy - I never knew Ben could dance. There are three double bedrooms and we decided to take the one downstairs and put Ben upstairs. Just so he could go to the loo in the night time without having to negotiate stairs he wasn't familiar with. This also meant we didn't have to be too quiet in the lounge in the evening as the third downstairs bedroom is at the back of the lounge. I can highly recommend Olive's Cafe next door. They have the most amazing Cherry Bakewell, and I'm a bit of a cake fan! The booking process was really easy and the Loft was immaculately clean when we arrived. We've already booked to go again in August next year. Now if you can just guarantee me some glorious weather.......
