The Salzburg Region

Austria's Salzkammergut region is the country's lake district. With breathtaking scenery of lakes and mountains, the area is home to many pretty Alpine villages. From St. Gilgen the local bus service provides transport to the city of Salzburg, St. Wolfgang, Mondsee, Bad Ischl, Fuschlsee and other towns and villages nearby.

Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart and home to ‘The Sound of Music’ boasts beautiful architecture and scenery from every viewpoint. 40 minutes from St. Gilgen by bus, Salzburg really is is a beautiful city with many attractions, including the not to be missed Christmas Market in the Cathedral square.

St Gilgen

The village of St. Gilgen is located on the shores of Lake Wolfgang in the heart of Austria's Salzkammergut, ‘Lake District’ region. Breathtaking scenery and easy access to the city of Salzburg make this an excellent base to explore the surrounding area. The village itself, less than 10 minutes walk from the apartment, has a pretty centre with ample facilities including 2 supermarkets, bakeries, local shops, banks, Internet café {summer only} and restaurants.

Rising from the shore of Lake Wolfgang to the east is the Schafberg Mountain with its funicular railway.

Behind the apartment is the Zwolferhorn Mountain with a cable car which runs throughout the year, weather permitting. Ski the Zwolferhorn in winter staight back the apartment. Paraglide it in summer!

The beautiful waterfront promenade is home to many restaurants, coffee shops and bars, where you can sit and enjoy the view. The boats to St. Wolfgang and Strobl also depart from here.

The village has tennis courts and a good sized indoor swimming pool which is open throughout the year. During the summer months one may swim in the lake {one of the warmest in the area} and sunbathe on the beaches.

The town is perfect for walkers with 80km of marked paths in and around St Gilgen, all easily accessible from the centre of the resort. The cable car will take you to the top of the Zwolferhorn Mountain, at 1,522 metres, where you will find a number of paths and many huts offering food and drink with fantastic panoramic views. You may wish to return by cable car or on foot. Alternatively, the area is very popular with paragliders and there is a local paragliding school based at the cable car base. Other popular walks include the three hour walk through peaceful woods to St Wolfgang. Walking maps are available at the Tourist Information office.

The area has numerous cycle paths around the lake and cycle hire is available in the village.

Around Lake Wolfgang

During the summer the historic mountain railway,, runs to the top of the Schafberg where you can spend the night in the mountaintop hotel or simply enjoy the view and walk or ride down. You can also continue on the ferry to visit the lovely town of Strobl with its lakeside promenade.

"THis place has everything you need for a relaxing holiday......"

I wanted to revisit St. Gilgen with my family as I can remember what a splendid holiday I had here as a boy many years ago. There is something or everyone in the area - nice walks in the mountains, great places to swim and sunbath by the lake, nice spars and cafes to indulge oneself, good local restaurants to saviour the high calorie local diet ! and nearby culture by the bucket load should you need it– there are many local places of interest (including some Sound of Music locations if that way inclined) and its a good base for short day trip excursions. We had perfect weather most of the time. The flat is located just above the village and within a short walk of all the facilities including a decent supermarket and tourist office. The location means you get a lovely uninterrupted view of the lake from the balcony – and so its easy to take it easy without having to actually get out and do anything…. The flat is comfortable and well equipped – the owners have thought long and hard about what is needed – we all really had a lovely time here.

"The best holiday ever"

Ease of access from Munich made a good beginning, although travelling back on a Saturday requires a little more time. The village was easy to find. The Flat ditto. The village itself was almost too pretty to be true and the surrounding area was breathtaking. We walked a lot, in spite of the heat, and discovered some really great walks, particularly in the hills above Strobl. The odd touring day took us to a range of small towns and villages, each different in itheir own way.Local shopping was good and reasonably priced and there is a wide selection of eateries of all sorts and prices. We couldn't have asked for more in terms of comfort and facilities in the apartment.. A final joy was the friendliness of everyone we met: Austrians do have a certain something and we Scots could cewrtainly learn a lot from them about running an effective tourist infrastructure. We are actively considering a return trip next summer.
