There are numerous towns and villages close by that offer the opportunity for interesting visits: Mayenne, Laval, Portmain, Vitré, Lassay Les Châteaux and Ambrières are just a few. The medieval town of Fougères is well worth exploring and is only a 30 minute drive. Laval also has a golf course and offers both an 18 and 9 hole course.

Le Mont St Michel (France's 2nd most visited tourist attraction) with its magnificent Abbey in the bay, quaint shops and restaurants offers a memorable day trip and is within a 2 hour drive. A must for all visitors.

Saint-Malo is the same distance and offers a walled city, cobbled streets, interesting architecture and an abundance of crêperies, restaurants and shops as well as beautiful beaches for an afternoons relaxation before the drive home.

“Perfect Place for our first holiday in France”

Reviewed 11 Oct 2015

This was our first holiday driving to France, L'echerbaudiere was far enough away to feel we had really travelled into France without it being too daunting a drive. On our arrival Sylvia and Charles greeted us with warmth and a lovely welcome basket. The Gite was exactly as pictured and it is finished to a high standard. (we stayed in the one bedroom) The weather wasn't great so we didn't use the pool, but made full use of the table tennis, badminton and games room. The outside swing bench was beautifully relaxing and would have been great while using the BBQ (it rained when we planned this!) Sylvia and Charles were able to offer advice on where to shop, and attractions to visit, but didn't intrude. We particularly enjoyed Chateau Fougere it was so worth the €8 per person. The pack with guide books in the gite helped us plan our days out. This is a great base for touring the area or just relaxing and doing very little. It is in a rural area and not suitable if you don't plan on driving much but it was close enough to St Denis and Ernee that it didn't bother us. The local custom is for restaurants to open at lunchtime rather than the evening so if you want to eat out you need to plan for this.

Many thanks for your lovely comments and the kind review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us so much and are sorry that the weather wasn't better for your trip.

“What a lovely, relaxing place for a break”

Reviewed 14 Dec 2014

We stayed for five nights in the queen bedroom gite. The property is in farming country near a small village so it could be a bit hard to find, but Google Maps has it marked on their map (some maps do not), so a little research beforehand is helpful. Charlie and Sylvia were marvellous hosts who greeted us warmly on arrival, showed us around the property, and knew when to give us space. They were very friendly and helpful with local information about places to visit, eat and shop. We especially enjoyed Fougeres castle and town walk which Sylvia recommended. The gite is beautifully presented with an eye for detail and extra nice touches, such as a bottle of wine included in the welcome pack when we arrived. The kitchen is very well appointed including an exhaust fan in the ceiling, and there is plenty of room to relax in the living area. We highly recommend L'Echerbaudiere for anyone wanting a holiday in a cosy country hideaway.

“A lovely relaxing week in a beautiful setting”

Reviewed 10 Sep 2014

We spent a week at this holiday rental and travelled with a young child of 4 years old. This gite had everything you could wish for and was extremely clean. The decor was modern yet in keeping with the traditional stone building. On site was a swimming pool, table tennis and a very large games room, stacked with board games, as well as a pool table/darts and table football. There was a large garden to wander around in and an abundance of beautiful flowers and fruit bearing trees (which we were encouraged to sample, by our very welcoming hosts Sylvia and Charlie) On walking out of the gite you are able to access bridle pathways, which lead through wooded areas..these routes can be as long or as short as you want (these became routine evening walks for us, after sampling the french cuisine and vin!-an excellent wind down after the day) We would definitely stay here again...a beautiful setting, extremely clean accommodation and enough to keep a little one occupied (regardless of the weather!)

“A peaceful and relaxing location”

Reviewed 7 Nov 2013

Well equipped accommodation in the heart of the Mayenne countryside. With numerous interesting and picturesque locations (the medieval Domfront, Ambrieres, Flers) and regional centres (Mayenne, Fougeres, Laval) all within reasonable striking distance the gite is well placed to explore this area of France. The property itself was spotless and well equipped. The hospitality basket containing a starter kit of eg milk, bread and eggs (and wine) among other things to help get guests settled in with ease was also a nice touch. Sylvia, the owner, couldn't have been more helpful and really went out of her way to make us feel welcome.

“Really enjoyed it - the gite, the people, the area.”

Reviewed 29 Sep 2012

We managed to find l'Echerbaudiere thanks to Google maps, and liked the ambiance immediately. Sylvia and Charlie were very welcoming, and we found the old beams and modern updates worked well together. We like the country, and this area is very nice with rolling hills and mixed farming. The villages around compete to be the prettiest and they do a great job; masses of flowers everywhere. Plenty of interesting things to see in the area as well.

“Very comfortable accommodation, brilliant hosts!”

Reviewed 15 Jul 2012

Accommodation was very comfortable with all that is required for a relaxing holiday. The hosts could not have been more helpful, and made us feel welcome and `looked after` without intruding in any way. Everyone should have a `Charlie`, but we werent allowed to take hom home!

“Excellent rural retreat yet close to country restaurants and supermarkets”

Reviewed 16 Jun 2012

The owner, Sylvia managed our last minute booking request with professional efficiency, accuracy and friendliness. Our GPS failed us and Sylvia immediately responded to our phone call for help and met us at nearest village. Cheerful welcome by Sylvia and Charlie, which include a detailed tour of the property and a welcome pack that included a bottle of wine. Affable and knowledgeable hosts willing to offer advice on local shopping and restaurants. Also willing to chat when we wanted advice yet very tuned in to when guests preferred privacy. A great skill. The area around the Gite was pleasant farm land and offered a great walk through a tree covered tunnel of a track to a nearby lake, which held huge examples of fish. All in all an excellently equipped Gite, very family oriented, with indoor games room and outdoor pool., set in French rural countryside at its best.
