The Languedoc-Roussillon region
The Languedoc area is the other South of France, distinct from Provence and not as busy or expensive. Languedoc has much to offer the holiday maker, be it sandy beaches, rivers, the Canal du Midi or the hills of the "arriere pays". It is an area of great beauty, interesting villages, good food and restaurants and much more. You'll want to come back to see more!
Saint Chinian has a long history, the first mention being the founding of a Bendictine monastery in 794. Some of the mediaeval streets remain, and the church has a beautiful pipe organ from the 18th century. Today Saint Chinian is a lively village of approx. 1800 full time inhabitants which is a great base for your holiday. The local winemakers produce excellent red, rose and white wines and vineyards abound in all directions. Saint-Chinian has a twice weekly market (Sunday and Thursday) throughout the year, and one of the highlights of the year is the Fete du Cru in July. The area around St Chinian is very good for walking and cycling, and there are many other leisure activities close by.

"I can't imagine staying anywhere else!"
I’ve stayed at Acanthus 6 or 7 times now, and will keep coming back to St. Chinian for the people, the village, the vineyards, the markets, the shops and restaurants, and for the warmth and beauty of Acanthus. The house and its furnishing are beautiful, so comfortable, bright, and inviting. And the village has everything that’s needed for a perfect holiday—gorgeous walks, friendly shopkeepers, amazing plat du jours, local wines and cheeses and fresh produce, markets twice a week, oh, and the patisseries…oh my… I keep going back, and can’t imagine going anywhere else in southern France.
Thank you so much for your kind comments, Susan!! I look forward to seeing you again next year!

"Perfect quirky home from home for us"
What a lovely house!!!!! Absolutely nothing to complain about. It had everything you could possibly need to have a good stay. Spotlessly clean and well maintained. Big comfy beds, new bathrooms with good showers and endless hot water.Kitchen quirky and very French !!! With everything you need to cook in, with a glass of local red of course!!. Lovely village, not commercial at all, with a few good places to eat and small shop. Good supermarket up the hill. Amazing area with wonderful views, lots of places to visit, Carcassone & Bezier a must, plus coast towns. Can't list every where we went but so much to see in the area. Andreas & Anthony always on hand and very helpful, nothing to much trouble for them. If ( or should I say when !!!!) we go back to the Languedoc I would certainly contact them for recommendations.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience - so pleased to hear that you had such an enjoyable stay!

"Fourth time there and hope to visit again."
Acanthus is an excellent, sun-filled apartment in a great location in a working village with few tourists. Twice-weekly fragrant and friendly outdoor market, all the little bakeries, meat shops, and a quite adequate small supermarket within just a few blocks. Owners provided a ton of information and were easily accessible to answer questions.
Hi and thank you for the review! I'm very glad to know that you enjoyed your fourth visit to St Chinian so much. Looking forward to seeing you again before too long!

"Warm friendly welcome to a lovely traditional French house"
We were met on arrival by the hosts who were extremely helpful in pointing out the amenities. A bonus was the bowl of fresh tasty tomatoes from their garden and a bottle of local wine. The light, airy house was spotless and well-equipped, and was within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants. It is situated in a wide quiet street. We have stayed there three times and can thoroughly recommend the house, village and area for a most enjoyable holiday.
